Not Worth the Price – Stay Elsewhere - The only good thing about this Holiday Inn in Crystal Lake, IL was its convenient location for our event. Beyond that, it was a huge disappointment. Our room was dirty, and to make things worse, the TV remote was missing. I requested a remote twice—never received one—so no TV for our entire 2-night stay. The hotel is clearly understaffed. The same poor guy was serving breakfast in the morning and tending bar at night—he even admitted he was overworked. The breakfast itself was awful, and they tried to charge $16.95 for what most hotels include with the booking. They hand out breakfast and drink coupons to select guests at random. We got comp breakfast coupons one day, were told to “just ask again” the next, and then were met with attitude and excuses like “we don’t give those out.” This place is overpriced, dirty, and poorly managed. I really regret not staying at the Comfort Inn instead. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
For Illinois residents, particularly those in the scenic and bustling Crystal Lake area, a hotel that serves a dual purpose as both a comfortable stay and a large-scale event venue is a significant resource. The Holiday Inn Chicago NW Crystal Lake Convention Center by IHG is designed to be just that, offering extensive meeting and banquet facilities alongside its guest rooms. This hotel, positioned as a full-service option, has a history of hosting a variety of events, from weddings to corporate gatherings, making it a central point for the community. However, as with any local business, the experience for individual guests can vary, and it's essential to look at the full picture. Guest reviews present a complex and at times contradictory view of the hotel. While some praise the beautiful lobby and spacious rooms, others express serious concerns about cleanliness, service, and perceived value for money. This article aims to provide a transparent and balanced overview, combining the hotel's intended purpose with the reality of customer experiences, allowing our local Illinois community to make a well-informed decision. We will delve into the hotel's location, the services it offers, and the standout features, all while keeping the factual, and at times critical, feedback from real guests front and center. This honest approach is crucial for a property that positions itself as a central hub for events, ensuring that locals and visitors know exactly what to expect from their stay, whether they are there for a wedding, a conference, or a simple overnight trip. The hotel's unique position as a convention center also means that guest experiences may be influenced by the size and nature of the events taking place during their stay, which is an important factor to consider.
This overview serves as a practical guide for understanding the hotel's place in the Crystal Lake market. The Holiday Inn brand is generally associated with a certain level of quality and service, but as customer reviews indicate, the execution of that standard can be inconsistent. The hotel has undergone recent renovations, and guests often comment on the updated, "beautiful lobby" and the spaciousness of the rooms, which are definite positives. However, these positives are often tempered by critiques of the hotel's operational management. For instance, the issue of understaffing, where a single employee is seen juggling multiple roles, has been a recurring point of frustration for some guests. Furthermore, the breakfast service, a key feature for many travelers, has received mixed feedback, with some guests finding it overpriced for what's offered and others receiving complimentary coupons seemingly at random. These details are important for local users to know, especially for those planning an extended stay or a special event. The value of this hotel is not just in its price, but in the overall experience, and it's clear that this experience can be a gamble. For locals who are considering this hotel for its convenient location to an event, it's worth noting the feedback on the room and service quality. This information is a crucial tool for our Illinois community, helping them to navigate their lodging options with full transparency and a realistic set of expectations. This balanced perspective is the best way to ensure a satisfactory outcome, even when the hotel itself is facing challenges.

Jun 15, 2025 · BN ANewer renovations are generally nice. Beautiful lobby and spacious hotel room. Bed was painfully hard, breakfast was overpriced, and quiet hours were apparently optional. Overall, a better stay than Country Inn & Suites (that place is gross), but not as nice as it should be for the price.
Jun 09, 2025 · Ashley MorhardtNot thrilled with my stay in October 2024. I went for a wedding and this was the host hotel for guests and shuttle service. First, the shuttle driver who was a young kid drove 20 minutes in the opposite direction of the venue, didn't know until I/we pointed it out. Then drove 20 minutes back in the other direction, then 20 minutes in the correct direction. Making us get to the venue minutes before the wedding began. So what turned into a 20 minute van ride turned into 60 minutes. Needless to say he did not get a tip. Maybe you should pick more responsible drivers or those who use a GPS. That is a terrible mistake. Lastly I want to complain about service. I swear the check in lady told me the day before that breakfast service ends at a certain time. I paid for two breakfast included in my room. When we got there they say it just ended. The staff even said "we heard that some people were told the wrong time". Okay so fix it!! I'll accept the fact I can't eat breakfast, but refund my money for your mistake. I asked what they could do for me and they said "nothing" they didn't even try to get a manager! The room was good though. But my stay has definitely been soured by the incompetent driver mostly. What if we were 20 minutes late for the wedding?? I would have love to get my breakfast price included since I paid for it but missed it due to front desk telling me it ends at the wrong time.
Apr 07, 2025 · Kirstin WetzellWe had such an amazing experience at the hotel! We had over 30 rooms booked for the wedding of our daughter. The rooms were magnificent! Clean, new and spacious!! The STAFF was so accommodating to us and all of our guests! We received so many compliments from all of guests on the hotel for its location, staff and overall amenities! As the mother of the bride—- I felt like I was always calling the front desk for something… and they al always made me feel like I was not bothering them! The restaurant, lobby bar and incredible pool— were a bonus for our guests during their stay. The wedding itself was AMAZING at the Elara banquet space! Linda from the Sales and Catering dept and Steve the Catering Manager WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND! They made EVERY EFFORT to make all of our visions and drama come true! The presentation of the food was so impressive and match how delicious it was! The appetizers just kept coming and were so plentiful and beautiful! I cannot say enough about how AMAZING this venue was for our daughter’s wedding!! Linda and Steve — are the best of the best! Mario— asst catering manager was so accommodating! I felt like the whole staff treated us like family and just wanted the best for us and our daughter! I would happily recommend this amazing STAFF AND hotel to anyone looking for a place to stay or to host an exquisite event!! We will be forever grateful to all who helped us during our adventure there! My husband has been a wedding DJ over the last 30 years. He has seen it all… and he remarked at just how top notch this whole team of managers and staff were! We will be forever grateful to all!! THANK YOU!!!!!!! I wish we could do it all over again!!
Mar 30, 2025 · Wendy FiedlerIf I could leave zero stars I would. The entire hotel front staff is absolutely incompetent. We showed up at 2 am after a delayed flight to find out the front desk gave our room away to the wrong person despite our names being on the reservation. The front desk girl was not helpful in the least and the only reason we got a room that night was because the security guard stepped in on our behalf. The manager Natasza was also not helpful and she tried to do right by simply apologizing and covering for her incompetents staffs inability to read. She offers us one night credit despite the fact that we were not checked in for an hour after arriving and the fact that they gave us a room that was not set up or cleaned properly. I can't imagine this is the first time a wedding block has been booked here so the fact that they gave our rooms away to someone else based off the same last name is ridiculous. It was an absolute breech in security as the room was still under our name despite them not giving us the room. I would expect a hotel to try to do right by their customers rather than making their experience worse. Would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy.
