I wanted to leave a review because of all of the negative reviews. They don't pick up their phones because they're mainly a bar and there's typically 1 or 2 staff who are working the hotel but sometimes the bar becomes understaffed and there is no one to answer the phones, so maybe contact housers bar and ask for hotel staff if you need to get in contact with someone. Our room was clean and the views of the bay was gorgeous. We have stayed in most of the fire island hotels and have to say this one was our favorite. We were able to check in super early and check out super late. Staff let us keep our bags there for the day after checking out as well. The downsides are that there is no TV and showers are outside of the room, but in my opinion the view made up for all of that. The AC drowned out external sounds. Staff is friendly and if this is the budget option for fire island, it's truly not too shabby.
For individuals exploring "Hotels Near Of Me" in Ocean Beach, Fire Island, Houser's Hotel, located at 785 Evergreen Walk, Ocean Beach, NY 11770, USA, presents itself as a distinctive, budget-conscious option. The hotel can be reached by phone at (631) 583-8900 or via mobile at +1 631-583-8900. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview, drawing from both the provided details and varying customer feedback, to give potential guests a clear understanding of what to expect from their stay at this Fire Island establishment.
The environment of Houser's Hotel is heavily influenced by its primary function as a bar. As noted by a reviewer, it is "mainly a bar," with hotel operations integrated into this setup. This means the atmosphere can be lively, particularly during evening hours due to the bar's activity. The hotel's location on Evergreen Walk in Ocean Beach places it within the heart of a popular Fire Island community, known for its pedestrian-only pathways, charming village, and access to both the bay and the ocean. Guests can expect a vibrant, social environment, especially if they are patrons of the bar. While the interior is described by one reviewer as featuring "old carpet" and potentially smelling "of sewage," another explicitly highlights that their "room was clean." This indicates a potentially inconsistent experience or that specific areas may have different levels of upkeep. However, a significant positive aspect of the environment is the "gorgeous" views of the bay available from some rooms, offering a picturesque backdrop for the stay. The overall Fire Island context, with its car-free roads and unique social scene, frames the Houser's Hotel experience, appealing to those who embrace this distinct island lifestyle.
The services at Houser's Hotel are somewhat unique and require adjusted expectations from guests. A key point from reviews is that they "don't pick up their phones because they're mainly a bar and there's typically 1 or 2 staff who are working the hotel but sometimes the bar becomes understaffed and there is no one to answer the phones." This suggests that direct phone contact for hotel-related inquiries might be challenging, and guests might need to "contact housers bar and ask for hotel staff" to get in touch. Despite this, positive aspects of service are highlighted: "Staff is friendly." Furthermore, the staff was "able to check in super early and check out super late," and they also "let us keep our bags there for the day after checking out." These instances indicate a level of flexibility and helpfulness from the on-site personnel, particularly in accommodating logistical needs typical of Fire Island travel. However, the limited staffing for hotel operations implies that guests seeking frequent or extensive services might find them unavailable, particularly during peak bar hours or overnight. The service model appears to be more casual and self-reliant than a traditional hotel.
The features of Houser's Hotel are basic, aligning with its positioning as a "budget option for Fire Island." Key features and their limitations, as reported by guests, include:
Promotional information for Houser's Hotel likely centers on its status as an "affordable option for Fire Island," particularly for younger travelers or those prioritizing nightlife and location over luxury. The reviews themselves act as a form of promotion, clarifying expectations: "If you're young, without kids, and drunk, it's fine. All others should probably take the last ferry back." This direct, albeit informal, guidance helps potential guests self-select if Houser's Hotel aligns with their travel style. The hotel's unique selling proposition is its integrated bar experience and its ability to offer relatively lower-cost accommodation in a high-demand, generally expensive destination like Fire Island. For those in the "Hotels Near Of Me" category specifically looking for a very basic, no-frills place to crash after enjoying the Fire Island social scene, Houser's could be considered. Its bay views are a definite plus that might be highlighted. Potential guests should directly contact the hotel (perhaps via the bar number if the hotel line is unresponsive) to confirm current pricing, room availability, and specific amenities to ensure it meets their very basic needs. It is crucial to set realistic expectations for a stay here, understanding that it provides a functional base for exploring Fire Island rather than a resort-style experience.

Jul 29, 2024 · Juli MarinaceIt is what it is because of the location and lack of affordable options, but compared to any other place I've ever slept, it's easily the worst. It stunk of sewage, the whole place is all old carpet. Rooms microscopic with zero amenities. Keys open any door. Gets the job done though and I didn't return home with bed bugs or anything... Tldr; If you're young, without kids, and drunk, it's fine. All others should probably take the last ferry back.
Aug 31, 2024 · Mike SweeneyRacist establishment! I visited on 7/3/2022 and waited in line for drinks for 45+ minutes without ever being served. I had the bartenders ignore me multiple times. One white lady wanted to help me order drinks and the bartender told her no and only gave her the drinks she ordered for herself. Afterwards, my friend and I were told to go somewhere else and f off! I wanted to cry! I’ve never felt racism like that in my life and i felt so unwelcome. Luckily, I had two girls who wanted to help me order drinks and it only took them 10 minutes to get us the drinks and the bartenders were so friendly with them. I wouldn’t recommend visiting this place unless you’re white.
Jul 04, 2022 · Kimberly DyceI have stayed here 4 times now. I love this hotel, BUT it's not for everyone. Look, here's the deal: this is a budget hotel. It is literally the cheapest hotel on the island, and yes, I've checked. This is where you stay if you are 1) young and broke and here to party, or 2) you love this island so much that you are willing to sacrifice creature comforts so you can be here for as long as possible on a limited budget. YES, it's true that no one will ever, EVER answer the phone or call you back if you leave a message. Literally not ever. IDK if they even check the messages, so God help you if you need to change your reservation. And YES, the bar stays open late and the music is clearly audible from your room, especially if you have a room that "faces town." But the staff are really kind and friendly if you need something (again, you will have to physically find someone, because no one will ever, EVER answer the phone), the rooms are clean and air-conditioned, and the food is great. The lobster rolls especially are the best I've ever had in my life. OMG the food is so good. I bring silicone earplugs to sleep with, and flip-flops for the communal showers. If you want fresh towels, you will need to find a staff member and ask for them. This is a super-relaxed, super-casual place. If you just need a place to sleep and take a shower as you explore the magical paradise that is Fire Island, then this place is the best. If you want a real hotel experience with maids and room service and fresh towels every day, then look elsewhere. This is a casual place for casual people -- but IMO that's the spirit of Fire Island. People go barefoot here for a reason. I do wish they would answer the phone sometimes though.
Oct 05, 2021 · L JMy daughter and I use to go for a weekend every year and eat at their restaurant which is not cheap. It’s not even that they have such nice accommodations, on the contrary…but rather the nostalgia that brought us back again and again. This year I called and left several messages and no one returned my call/s. It’s simple courtesy unless no one speaks English there which is why they don’t return calls?? Anyway, we stayed at Cleggs and it is much nicer. They know how to run a business in a professional and welcoming way. Thank you Cleggs, we will see you next year 🌞
