The owner here is super friendly, and we had some fantastic dives here in the quarry. We dove in September and the water was a pretty comfortable 77°F. At around 30ft there's a sharp thermocline where the temperature drops into the low 60's. We didn't go deeper than that. Visibility was fine. You have to set your expectations for fresh water, and we also came right after Hurricane Helene, which certainly didn't do us any favors. There are some cool things to look at and stuff to swim through to practice your skills. Be sure to go see Sharkie, who is due southwest of the docks near the far side. The coolest sighting here was the paddlefish. We managed to see both of them while we were here, which is our first time ever encountering them!

Loch Low‑Minn Introduce

For local users and visitors searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" with a specific focus on aquatic adventure, Loch Low-Minn in Athens, TN, stands out not as a traditional resort hotel, but as a dedicated scuba diving resort centered around a ten-acre quarry lake. Located at 116 Co Rd 420, Athens, TN 37303, USA, and reachable at (423) 746-0798 or +1 423-746-0798, Loch Low-Minn offers a unique and engaging experience for certified divers and those looking to learn. It is a niche destination that caters specifically to the diving community, providing an accessible and well-maintained freshwater dive site in East Tennessee.

The environment at Loch Low-Minn is, first and foremost, a quarry lake transformed into a vibrant underwater playground. The core of the resort's appeal lies beneath the surface. The ten-acre quarry lake boasts remarkably clear waters, with an average visibility often cited around 35 feet. While visibility can, as with any freshwater body, be influenced by factors like recent weather (such as heavy rainfall from a hurricane, as one reviewer noted), the general expectation is good clarity for inland diving. The underwater landscape includes various features designed to enhance the diving experience. These include an eclectic assortment of artifacts and structures to explore, providing points of interest and opportunities for skill practice. The depths vary, with some areas reaching around 70 feet, though many dives might stay within the 21-foot range, particularly for training purposes. Divers should be aware of the natural thermocline, typically around 30 feet, where the water temperature can drop from a comfortable surface temperature (around 77°F in September, as noted by a reviewer) into the low 60s. The surrounding land environment is designed to support diving activities, offering convenient shore entry to the quarry.

Loch Low-Minn offers a range of services and features tailored for the diving community. The primary service is access to the quarry for day diving. The resort is typically open for day diving on weekends from 9 am to 6 pm, May through October, and by arrangement for other times. Doors close at 4 pm. This schedule caters to recreational divers and dive shops. They also offer equipment rentals, which is a crucial service for divers who may not own all their gear or are traveling light. For dive shops and instructors, Loch Low-Minn serves as a popular site for open water certification dives. This means they provide a controlled and suitable environment for students to complete their practical training under supervision. Reviewers consistently praise the "super friendly owner" and staff, indicating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, which is invaluable for both experienced divers and those new to the sport. The emphasis on safety and customer satisfaction is evident in the positive feedback regarding staff interactions. Furthermore, the resort website indicates that it has been under new management since the summer of 2014, with continuous improvements to both on-site and online amenities, suggesting a commitment to enhancing the overall visitor experience.

The standout features of Loch Low-Minn are undoubtedly its unique underwater attractions and aquatic life. The quarry is home to a variety of fish species, including bluegills, bass, and catfish. However, the most celebrated residents are the rare and extraordinary paddlefish. These ancient, gentle giants, which can grow quite large (up to 6 feet and 60+ pounds), were introduced to the loch in 2006 in partnership with the Tennessee Aquarium. Their presence provides a truly unique sighting for divers, with many visitors making it a goal to spot "Sharkie" (one of the paddlefish) or others, often found southwest of the docks near the far side. Beyond the marine life, the quarry contains various submerged objects and structures. While specific details can change, these typically include features for divers to swim through and observe, allowing for skill practice and exploration. The existence of training platforms at varying depths (e.g., 20ft and 60ft) further solidifies its utility as a training ground. The clean water for each guest in the hot tub, if any such facility exists on site or nearby in affiliation, would be another appealing feature, though the provided reviews do not specify an on-site hot tub at the dive quarry itself.

For promotional information, Loch Low-Minn positions itself as a prime choice within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category for anyone passionate about scuba diving or interested in learning. Its specialization as a dive resort is its strongest selling point. Key promotional messages would highlight:

  • The unique opportunity to dive with the rare paddlefish, distinguishing it from other freshwater dive sites.
  • The excellent visibility and varied underwater landscape, making it ideal for both recreational diving and skill practice.
  • The "super friendly owner" and staff, ensuring a welcoming and supportive environment for all divers.
  • Its role as a popular site for open water certification dives, making it a go-to for dive schools and new divers in the region.
  • The convenient operating hours (weekends, May-October, and by arrangement) that accommodate diverse schedules.
  • Its accessibility from major nearby cities in East Tennessee, such as Knoxville and Chattanooga, being located just off I-75.

For those living locally or planning a trip to East Tennessee, Loch Low-Minn offers a specific and rewarding outdoor activity. It can be promoted as a day trip destination or as a central point for a diving weekend. Potential promotional offers might include group discounts for affiliated dive shops, encouraging more organized trips to the quarry. The resort's history and continuous improvements under new management also add to its appeal, showing a commitment to maintaining a high-quality diving experience. While not a traditional "resort hotel" in the sense of offering extensive lodging and dining services on-site, its designation as a "scuba diving resort" effectively communicates its primary function and target audience. For anyone searching for an engaging and unique aquatic adventure under the "Hotels Near Of Me" umbrella in the Athens, TN area, Loch Low-Minn is the definitive destination for freshwater scuba diving.

Decent dive quarry. Super friendly owner. Unfortunately for us the visibility was very low. Would say visit if you're local but only travel out of state if you want to see Sharkie. Was too much for me.

I was a little skeptical before I headed up to do three of my dives for certification. The colder water was very clear so it was great for some fresh water diving. It's got a lot to be looked at, including a sunken bus and a shark. The drop off toward the center of the quarry is pretty fascinating as well. Granted it was really my first fresh water dive, but it was better diving than my last dive in Puerto Rico

Got certified here in May! The water was SUPER cold down below but they had some cool stuff! I can’t wait to go back soon and scope out everything there is to see down below!

Amazing quarry to dive and practice your skills. We enjoy the paddlefish and the ironic statues at different depths. Weather early October was 71 degrees outside and water temp was 74 down to about 40’. Beautiful time! Go get certified and come to dive at the resort!
