Good things: The location and room was very nice. Close to downtown shops and nice winery in the building. We enjoyed the fireplace. Parking was easy. There were some issues with the heating unit being turned off in our room and not working but calling the innkeeper got this fixed initially. However it stopped working in the middle of the night. Check in and out was also contactless so it felt more like an Airbnb. There was no one working the front desk- phone numbers were left for us to call if needed. Check in was confusing because no instructions on website or with confirmation - we had to call the inn that day to find out what was going on. The soap dish in the bathroom was an old suction cup one so it fell off when we tried using it.

This allows for incredibly easy access to the town's famous Diamond (town square), charming specialty shops, antique stores, and a variety of local restaurants and pubs, all within a block's walk. The building itself is a stunning early 20th-century mansion, originally built by coal baron John Seger, featuring beautifully restored woodwork and glasswork that contribute to its historic ambiance. This deep rooting in Ligonier's history offers guests a unique environment that blends historical charm with modern comfort.
The hotel's location also provides excellent access to key regional attractions. Historic Fort Ligonier is a mere 288 yards away, essentially within walking distance, offering an immersive historical experience. For family entertainment, Idlewild and SoakZone amusement park is a short 2.5 miles (about a 5-minute drive) away, making it a convenient base for theme park visitors. Other nearby attractions include the Compass Inn Museum (3.4 miles), and further afield, the stunning natural beauty of Ohiopyle State Park and the historical significance of the Flight 93 Memorial. The property offers free self-parking in a lot directly behind the inn, which is a valuable convenience in a historic town. The addition of a Stroboid Pavilion on the grounds aims to enhance the unique character of downtown Ligonier and provide a new gathering space.
Thistledown At Seger House operates on a boutique hotel model, aiming to provide the cozy feel of a bed and breakfast with the privacy of a traditional hotel. While there isn't a traditional 24/7 staffed front desk, phone numbers for the innkeeper are provided for assistance, giving it a more "Airbnb-like" feel, as some guests have noted. Check-in is typically contactless, with instructions needing to be obtained by contacting the inn in advance. Check-in starts at 2:00 PM and check-out is by 11:00 AM. Guests should contact the property at least 48 hours before arrival for check-in instructions, especially if arriving after 5:00 PM.
The hotel offers 8 air-conditioned accommodations, each designed for comfort. Rooms come with private bathrooms, flat-screen televisions with satellite channels, and complimentary toiletries. Each room is equipped with a Carrier mini-split system for AC and supplemental heating, though guests have noted that the AC can be temperamental in some rooms (either very warm when off or very cold when on), suggesting a need for guests to adjust it carefully. Free Wi-Fi is available in public areas and in the rooms. Hair dryers are provided. While breakfast is not included in the room rate, a Keurig coffee and tea station is available for guests on the 2nd floor 24/7 at no charge. Sweet Pea Bakery is located on the first floor of the historic building, offering various sweets and beverages, particularly on weekends, providing convenient breakfast and snack options. La Vigneta Winery is also located on the first floor, offering guests the unique experience of having a winery right in the building.
Housekeeping service is provided daily. The hotel has an elevator, increasing accessibility within the historic building. A lobby fireplace offers a cozy common area. Pets (dogs only) are welcomed at no additional fee, and service animals are also exempt from fees, making it a very pet-friendly option. Restrictions apply, so guests should confirm details when booking. However, there are no rollaway/extra beds or cots for infants available.
Thistledown At Seger House's primary feature is its status as a historic mansion converted into a boutique hotel. This early 20th-century building, once a mansion for a coal baron and later a hospital, retains much of its original grandeur, including beautifully restored woodwork, glasswork (some thought to be Tiffany stained-glass windows), and six working fireplaces, each with unique original tile work. This historical authenticity provides a unique ambiance that sets it apart from more modern establishments.
The hotel is locally owned and operated by Adam and Michelle Gardner, who are noted for putting "an extensive amount of pride and care" into the property, aiming for a family-friendly, welcoming, and private atmosphere. With only 8 rooms, the experience is more intimate and personalized. The blend of historic charm with modern amenities, such as mini-split AC units in all rooms and free DirecTV, aims to provide comfort while preserving the building's character. The presence of La Vigneta Winery and Sweet Pea Bakery directly within the building is a distinctive feature, offering unique on-site experiences for guests.
While the check-in process is contactless and there isn't a traditional front desk, guests are provided with phone numbers for assistance. This approach, while convenient for some, has led to minor confusion for others, highlighting the importance of clear pre-arrival instructions. The hotel generally maintains a very clean and quiet environment, as frequently noted in guest reviews.
Specific time-limited promotional packages for Thistledown At Seger House are not extensively detailed online. However, its unique features and high guest satisfaction levels act as a strong draw. The "no additional fee" policy for dogs is a significant promotional point for pet owners. The convenience of having an on-site winery and bakery, along with being steps away from downtown Ligonier, are inherent value propositions. Guests seeking "Hotels Near Of Me" that prioritize charm, history, and a quieter, more private stay will find Thistledown very appealing.
The hotel is a non-smoking property throughout, with a significant charge for smoking in rooms. Pricing may vary by day of the week, with Tuesdays and Wednesdays potentially offering cheaper deals, and Saturdays often being the most expensive. The cheapest months for stays are generally February and July. Due to its limited number of rooms, booking in advance is advisable, especially during peak seasons or for events like Fort Ligonier Days. While there isn't a dedicated restaurant, the Sweet Pea Bakery and nearby dining options fill that gap. Guests might find it helpful to bring their own full-length mirror or a reading lamp if these are preferred amenities, as some reviews have noted their absence. For dining and activity recommendations, guests should utilize the provided phone numbers or online resources for local information. Overall, Thistledown At Seger House offers a distinctive and memorable stay for those looking for a charming, well-located, and highly-rated boutique hotel experience in Ligonier.

Jan 03, 2025 · Mariah AwanLovely Historic Hotel - extremely clean, quiet and a great location! A few modern touches would be helpful - floor lamp next to a chair for reading and perhaps a full length mirror somewhere. We were confused checking in - the front door was locked, and we weren't sure about which entrance in the back. Some written directions for the mini-split, TV and the gas fireplace would be helpful. I'm not sure if there were any housekeeping services - not a big deal if you're there for a short time. Of course there's a name and number you can call......but it would be nicer if the information was provided. Since there's no restaurant perhaps some literature about where to eat and things to do. We'll definitely go back.
Jun 03, 2024 · Fran ZettlWhat a wonderful experience my husband and I had on our first time staying here. The owner Michelle was beyond delightful! Maria in the winery was amazing as well. We will be back!!
Nov 09, 2024 · S HWe booked the hotel last week and enjoyed our stay, The location is excellent and it was very clean and quiet. We found the check in a confusing (the front doors were locked and the key to the room was left in a mailbox at the back). We weren't clear if there were any housekeeping services - but assume there must be since someone had emptied the wastebasket while we were gone. It is a historical building but if possible a few more amenities would be nice - perhaps a full length mirror somewhere and a floor lamp so you could sit in a chair and read. We've been to Ligonier many times and know most of the town - it might be helpful though to have a list or book in the rooms with nearby restaurants and their hours as well as local attractions. Just a suggestion. Probably the best place to stay in town.
Jun 10, 2024 · Fran ZettlStayed at this very charming boutique hotel this past weekend. Absolutely loved it! The room was very clean, warm and welcoming! Dinner and drinks at Sweet Rust restaurant on the first floor was delicious! So many unique options to choose from on the menu. The bartender Andrew, was friendly and very knowledgeable. We purchased several bottles of bourbon to gift. A bottle for us as well. It is a place we will definitely stay at again!
