It's not like the place was before COVID. No pool. HVAC filters in the room were clogged. Seems only one wing, the West wing was open. The room had not been touched by housekeeping prior. Cobwebs and dust everywhere. No shear curtains. The bathroom has a six foot wainscoting, nice touch. A lot of work ahead for whomever owns the place.
The Anchorage Inn and Suites, located at 417 Woodbury Ave, Portsmouth, NH 03801, USA, and reachable by phone at (603) 431-8111 or +1 603-431-8111, is a lodging option frequently found on "Hotels Near Of Me" platforms. This hotel has a long history in Portsmouth, offering a practical and generally affordable place to stay with convenient access to the region's attractions. It's important for potential guests to be aware that the property has been undergoing renovations, which impacts some aspects of the guest experience.
The environment at Anchorage Inn and Suites is currently characterized by ongoing renovations, as noted by recent guest reviews. While the hotel website emphasizes modern guest rooms and eloquently designed two-room suites, and that the property has been a welcoming place since 1971, customer feedback indicates that aspects of the property may appear dated or show signs of wear, such as older carpeting and issues with cleanliness like cobwebs and dust in some areas, or a back parking lot used for trailers. Portable heaters in hallways also suggest heating system adjustments or ongoing work. However, the hotel's location remains a significant advantage. Situated on Woodbury Avenue, it offers excellent visibility and easy access to the Portsmouth rotary circle, which connects directly to major routes. This prime spot means guests are just minutes away from downtown Portsmouth's historic Market Square, vibrant dining scene, and attractions like Strawbery Banke Museum and Prescott Park. It's also conveniently located near Water Country amusement park and the Kittery Outlets, making it a strategic base for both local exploration and shopping excursions. The management's continuous efforts at renovation suggest a commitment to improving the overall environment, aiming to bring it closer to its past reputation for quality.
Despite the challenges associated with ongoing renovations, the staff at Anchorage Inn and Suites consistently receives positive remarks for their friendliness, helpfulness, and welcoming demeanor. Guests have highlighted the front desk staff for being very friendly and knowledgeable, and for being accommodating with requests. While housekeeping is not offered on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays, guests can request fresh towels and amenities at the front desk, showing a level of adaptability in service. The hotel offers a 24-hour front desk, ensuring that assistance is available at any time. Complimentary Wi-Fi is provided in all guest rooms and public areas, a crucial amenity for modern travelers. For guests staying for longer durations, the availability of a coin-operated laundry room, while not extensively detailed, suggests a practical solution for personal needs. The hotel also offers meeting facilities for up to 35 people, catering to small business gatherings. The positive interaction with staff is a recurring theme in reviews, indicating a strong commitment to guest satisfaction despite the property's transitional phase.
The Anchorage Inn and Suites provides a range of essential features, with some aspects potentially affected by the ongoing renovation work. While the hotel website mentions an attractive indoor pool and sauna, recent reviews indicate that the pool might not always be available or operational ("No pool" or "pool was down"). Guests should verify the current status of these amenities if they are crucial to their stay. The hotel does offer a fitness center for those who wish to maintain their exercise routines. Guest rooms are equipped with comfortable mattresses, flat-screen cable televisions with over 80 channels (including HBO), microwaves, refrigerators, coffee makers, irons, ironing boards, and hairdryers. The hotel offers a variety of room types, including standard rooms with king or double beds, and notably, new specialty suites. These themed suites, such as the Haven, Strawbery Banke, Prescott Park, and Seacoast Sands Suites, offer more luxurious features like separate bedrooms, jetted tubs, wet bars, and fireplaces, catering to those seeking a more romantic or upscale experience. A complimentary continental breakfast is available, though its quality has received mixed reviews, with some finding it satisfactory and others desiring more variety. The hotel provides free uncovered self-parking, including space for RVs, buses, and trucks. While the hotel is generally smoke-free, some smoking rooms may be available. The hotel also highlights a keyless lock system, adding a layer of modern convenience and security.
When considering Anchorage Inn and Suites on platforms like "Hotels Near Of Me," its value proposition often lies in its competitive rates, especially for its location, and the inclusion of complimentary amenities such as Wi-Fi and breakfast. While the ongoing renovations present some inconsistencies in guest experience, the hotel's efforts to update the property suggest future improvements. Its prime location near major highways provides easy access to downtown Portsmouth, the Kittery Outlets, and other regional attractions, making it a practical choice for budget-conscious travelers who prioritize accessibility. The hotel occasionally offers special rates or packages, and direct booking through their website might provide the most up-to-date information on available amenities and any ongoing renovation-related adjustments. Given the feedback, the Anchorage Inn and Suites appears to be a property in transition. While it may not offer the polished experience of a newly built hotel, its dedicated staff, essential amenities, and strategic location can still provide a functional and convenient base for exploring the vibrant Seacoast region, particularly for travelers willing to overlook some cosmetic imperfections in exchange for value and accessibility.

Mar 19, 2025 · Jack MaliszewskiI was told this hotel was once very nice but now it's always under construction. Back parking lot is filled with 18 wheeler trailers and junk. The hallways have portable heaters. Place has seen it's better days.
Apr 08, 2025 · Jeffrey DeslerFirst things first - no breakfast, no pool as advertised. Which is a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. The fitness room only has 2 treadmills and a sauna that I'm trying to see if it'll actually heat up. Says it takes 45 mins to heat up... We shall see.....IT DOES WORK ! BUT it doesn't get as hot as it's supposed to.... This place is like a crack shack. It smells like mildew if I would have known how bad this facility was I would have never rented the room for 6 days I would have went next door to Howard Johnson for pretty much the same price with food in the am and a pool. I stayed here for three weeks due to an issue with going home but now that I can I have never been more greatful for something in my life. Smh never again will I stay here. It's terrible. And if you need a cheap room sure fine but mind you the 'clean towels' I got had blood all over them DISGUSTING!!! On our last night - our ceiling started POURING down on me last night so we had to switch rooms. If you stay in 362 you can not use your shower or it legit pours into the room below you 262. We got moved everything was fine bed was nicer until this morning when I went to use the bathroom and the toilet won't flush ... Smh the plumbing in this building is horrendous. They are working with legit half of a hotel it's pretty crazy.
Feb 15, 2025 · Megan MorrisThis place was definitely not as advertised. The price was affordable and the person working the night that we came was actually very nice. The room, however, was not nice. It was evident that people had been smoking in the room which was something I had asked about I was told that it didn't happen. The sheets were clean but the rugs were not and it appeared that the police had not been deep cleaned in a long time. There were water stains all along the ceiling which indicated possible leakage from the room above. There was literal mold growing on the baseboard behind the toilet. The driveway was littered with trash and the entryway was covered with cigarette butts. The breakfast room did appear to have some new renovation and looks like they are trying to make some things better but there's no excuse for not cleaning even when you have an old building. Given that there was no breakfast attendant, I wasn't sure how long the products were sitting in the breakfast room. I did try the apple juice which basically was watered down and warm. I'm hoping that over time they are able to bring it up to speed and have the accommodations match the niceness of the people working at the front desk. In the morning when we tried to check out we had to wait for 20 minutes for someone to come to the desk so that we could get a receipt.
Sep 01, 2024 · Susan RussellThe hotel is under construction, as noted on their website. The rooms look NOTHING like the pictures that are posted. The rooms need to be updated and show wear. The first room we had was on the main floor. Some individuals are long-term guests; we were placed across from them. The doors across from us did not close, so you could see into their bathroom. The other door was missing a lock and had painter's tape covering the hole. I let the hotel front desk know that I felt uncomfortable, and they moved me immediately to a more comfortable floor. If you are traveling with kids and want to feel safe, I would keep looking. The staff was friendly, but this was not a hotel we would visit again due to the issue of the kids being scared and me feeling uncomfortable.
