First off, Took 2 days of calling multiple times to get someone to answer to book a room. I email them and the email address came back as not good. When I got here. Shower does not have any pressure so it takes along time to rinse hair. The curtains are backwards (inside out in room) does not block light out. It was like living in Alaska where its light all night. Bed was very hard and metal sticking out of sides. Husband hit his ankle on it. Pillows are super flat. Ice machine cost 25 cents for ice and when we put our quarter in it never received any ice and took our quarter. Then when we went back to our room from unsuccessfully getting ice, we were locked out. Key did not work. It was 8am office was closed and did not open till 930am. Thankfully they had a after hour number and the guy answered and let us in our room and made us a new key. It is dirty and mold around the toilet. Overall very bad experience and will not recommend or come back.

For Virginians, especially those in the Southwest region, the Convenient Inn in Pennington Gap once represented a local, no-frills lodging option. Situated amidst the scenic beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, it aimed to offer a practical place to stay for those exploring the area, visiting family, or passing through on business. While its doors are now closed, understanding its historical context provides a glimpse into the types of accommodations available in the charming town of Pennington Gap.
In its operational years, the Convenient Inn catered to travelers seeking an accessible and straightforward stop in Lee County. Its focus was on providing basic lodging, a common need for many navigating the less-traveled, but incredibly picturesque, routes of Virginia's coalfield region. This overview will delve into what the Convenient Inn offered based on past customer experiences and publicly available data, giving a picture of its role within the local hospitality landscape. It's a reminder of the evolving nature of local businesses and the services they provide to their communities.
The Convenient Inn was located at 191 Industrial Dr, Pennington Gap, VA 24277, USA. This address placed it in a practical and accessible spot within Pennington Gap, a town nestled in the heart of Lee County, Southwest Virginia. The "Industrial Drive" designation suggests an area with good road access, likely near main thoroughfares, making it relatively easy for travelers to find when driving through the region. Publicly available information, such as old website content, noted its convenient placement "right off of Hwy. 58 directly behind McDonalds," highlighting its ease of access for road-trippers and those unfamiliar with the immediate area.
Pennington Gap itself is a gateway to a myriad of natural and historical attractions within Southwest Virginia. While the Convenient Inn's direct surroundings were more commercial, its location provided a base for exploring the region's rich Appalachian heritage, outdoor recreational opportunities, and local communities. Guests would have been within reach of sites like the Powell Valley Overlook, Stone Mountain State Park, and various historical markers detailing the area's mining and pioneer past. Its position made it suitable for those needing a stopover while traversing U.S. Route 58, a significant corridor connecting parts of Southwest Virginia. The accessibility off a major highway was a key feature for guests seeking a convenient overnight stay.
Based on past reviews, the Convenient Inn historically aimed to offer fundamental services for a short stay, typical of a motel in its class. These services, as experienced by past customers, included:
It is important to note that customer reviews indicated issues with the consistency and quality of some of these services. For example, some guests reported difficulties reaching the front desk via phone, issues with room cleanliness (mold), maintenance problems (broken locks, holes in the tub, non-functioning sliding doors), and amenities not working as expected (ice machine taking money without dispensing ice, poor shower pressure, flat pillows). These historical accounts suggest that while the basic framework of services was in place, the execution and upkeep sometimes fell short of guest expectations.
Based on historical customer feedback and its operational model, the Convenient Inn had a few notable features and intended highlights, even with their reported inconsistencies:
It is crucial to reiterate that while these features were either inherent to its structure or intended improvements, many customer experiences historically highlighted significant issues such as poor maintenance (e.g., holes in tubs, broken deadbolts, metal sticking out of beds, dirty conditions), lack of cleanliness (stained sheets, mold), and functional problems with amenities (low water pressure, non-light-blocking curtains, non-working ice machine).
Given that the Convenient Inn is now closed, information regarding past promotions or special offers is no longer actively available. Historically, independent motels of this nature typically offered straightforward pricing without extensive promotional campaigns seen at larger hotel chains. Any offers would likely have been direct, perhaps through walk-in rates, or occasionally advertised on older, local booking platforms or on-site signage. Guests might have encountered standard discounts for extended stays or possibly seasonal rates, but the provided reviews do not mention any specific promotions. Due to its closure, there are no current or future promotions to inquire about.
As the Convenient Inn is no longer operational, the following contact information is provided for historical context only. It is not currently active for bookings or inquiries.

Please note: Other online sources might show slightly different addresses (e.g., 131 Industrial Dr.) and an old phone number (276) 546-5350 and email address (convenientinn1@yahoo.com). However, the customer review explicitly stated that calling multiple times to the provided number was difficult, and an email to the provided address was undeliverable. This further indicates the challenges guests faced even during its operational period.
From a historical perspective, the Convenient Inn in Pennington Gap, while having significant documented issues, would have appealed to certain segments of the Virginia local population for a few key reasons. Firstly, its sheer existence as a lodging option in a smaller, rural area like Pennington Gap meant it filled a basic need for visitors to the immediate community. For locals visiting family or attending events in the area, or those passing through who preferred to support a local establishment over a major chain, it offered a familiar, if sometimes challenging, choice.
Secondly, its roadside accessibility off Highway 58 made it a straightforward, quick stop for those navigating Southwest Virginia. For budget-conscious travelers, particularly in its earlier years or during periods of better upkeep, it likely offered a more affordable alternative to hotels in larger, more distant towns. In an area where lodging options might be limited, simply having a place to lay one's head, even with its reported imperfections, could have been considered "convenient" by some seeking minimal amenities for a single night's rest. However, it's clear from the reviews that the challenges experienced by guests, such as maintenance failures and customer service issues, ultimately led to a very poor overall experience, indicating why it is no longer a viable option for locals or travelers today.

Jun 03, 2024 · Jenny ManessOur room was very run down. There was a huge hole in the tub. The sheets were stained and the deadbolt lock was broken. We only stayed 1 of our 2 nights and was told we would have to stay in town for 2 more days to personally talk to the owner about a refund. I had a friend pick up the keys before we got there because no one would be in the office when we got there. I would never stay there again.
Jun 05, 2023 · Myra FieldsThe best thing about this place is the location. Extremely overpriced! Had to be transferred from the first room due to cockroaches being over whelming, the room they moved me into was not all the way bug free but may have seen 1 and it was a lot cleaner. The employees are very nice on most days. Well while my youngest was using the restroom minding her own business part of the bathroom ceiling falls down and hits her in the head. Never have I tried to be calmer I tell them what happens and they never asked if she was ok but told me thanks for telling them I mean it could have been a lawsuit but honestly if they don't fix the motel you know they can't have the funds for something like that thank goodness I'm not greedy. But it would have been nice to know that it upset them my 9 year old could have been hurt. Front desk ladies are amazing don't really know any of the other workers tho. It could use a serious overhaul!!! But honestly do not see the owner doin that. I honestly only will stay if I have exhausted all other places!!! So very sorry if I embrass any 1 with my review.
Aug 12, 2022 · Melissa HammondsI booked a room for 3/10/17, and was told there would be someone there to check us in until 3 a.m. , because I knew we would be checking in around 1:30 a.m. I called 5 times between 10:30 pm to 11:00 p.m. and no answer. Not wanting to risk it after an 8 hour drive, as there is no other hotel within an hour, we had to stay 2 and a half hours away from our destination. The staff when booking were very hospitable, but I wouldn't risk it if you plan on checking in late.
Mar 11, 2017 · Sherri ProctorWe were in town for a relative's funeral and had an all night drive to get there from northern Indiana. The staff was very accommodating in allowing an earlier than normal check in time. This hotel is pet friendly which was essential as we were unable to kennel our dog before the trip. This is not a 5 star establishment but it met our needs for the occasion. The staff was friendly, the price was friendly and I'm syre we would stay therr again if in the area.
