No frills hotel. Clean & has all you need for your stay. Grounds are beautiful & location is excellent. Only about 1/2 mi walk to the beach and 1/2 mile walk into town. It was wonderful not having to worry about parking in town. We stayed in the main building on the second floor. Note there are NO elevators so you must be able to carry your bag upstairs. Bed was comfortable, could have used fluffier pillows they were a bit flat. Coffee, tea & hot chocolate were available in the morning. We would stay here again.

Franciscan Guest House Introduce

For travelers exploring "Hotels Near Of Me" in the picturesque Kennebunk, Maine area, the Franciscan Guest House offers a distinctive and budget-friendly lodging experience. Located at 26 Beach Ave, Kennebunk, ME 04043, USA, this property is more than just a place to stay; it's part of a historic estate managed by Lithuanian Franciscan Friars, providing a unique blend of affordability, simplicity, and access to serene, expansive grounds.

The environment of the Franciscan Guest House is a significant part of its appeal. It is situated on the same 66-acre estate as the St. Anthony's Franciscan Monastery, offering guests access to beautifully maintained grounds. These grounds, with lawns reportedly designed by the renowned Frederick Law Olmsted Brothers (who designed New York's Central Park), feature peaceful riverside walking paths, gardens, woodlands, and outdoor chapels. This tranquil setting provides a wonderful escape from the usual hustle and bustle, inviting guests to relax, meditate, or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll. The property includes several buildings for accommodations, including the Main Building (a former boarding school), and the Tudors and White House cottages, each with its own character.

In terms of services and features, the Franciscan Guest House is best described as a "no-frills hotel" that provides all the essentials for a comfortable stay, focusing on value and a convenient location. Key amenities include a seasonal outdoor saltwater pool, a refreshing amenity for guests to enjoy during the warmer months. Complimentary wireless internet access is available throughout the property, and guests also benefit from free hotel parking, a valuable feature in a popular coastal town like Kennebunk. For morning refreshments, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are available in the lobby each morning, contributing to a simple yet appreciated start to the day.

The rooms at the Franciscan Guest House are designed for practicality and comfort, offering "clean & has all you need for your stay." While reviews indicate that some aspects of the rooms may appear dated, the hotel emphasizes cleanliness and functionality. Each room typically includes a private bathroom, cable TV, in-window AC and heater units, and a mini-fridge. Fresh linens and towels are available daily upon request. Hair dryers and ironing boards can also be obtained upon request from the front desk. The Main Building, where many guests stay, was originally built in the 1950s as a boarding school, influencing the room configurations which can vary from single queen beds to multiple full or twin beds, and even some multi-room units capable of sleeping four to six people. It's important to note that the Main Building has no elevators, so guests needing assistance with luggage should consider requesting a first or ground floor room.

The unique history and non-profit nature of the Franciscan Guest House are also noteworthy. It aims to offer "inexpensive accommodations" for travelers, families, couples, and retirees. The property has a rich history, having been purchased by Lithuanian Friars in 1947 after fleeing the Soviet invasion. It served as a religious center and even a high school before becoming a year-round hotel and retreat center in 1969. Guests are welcomed to visit the active St. Anthony's Franciscan Monastery next door, attend Mass, and explore the spiritual grounds.

The location of the Franciscan Guest House is truly excellent and is often highlighted as its strongest asset. Situated at 26 Beach Ave, it's approximately a "half mile walk to the beach" (Kennebunk Beach) and also a "half mile walk into town" (Kennebunkport's Dock Square). This prime positioning means guests don't have to worry about finding parking in the often-crowded town center or at the beach, providing immense convenience. Guests can easily stroll to Kennebunkport village for its lovely shops, fine dining, casual restaurants, whale watching tours, and kayak rentals. The proximity to the beaches allows for easy enjoyment of swimming, sunbathing, and coastal walks.

While the aesthetic of the rooms may be perceived as "no frills" or "dated" by some, the overall value and convenience are highly rated by many. Guests who appreciate a simple, clean, and affordable place to stay, with the added benefit of beautiful grounds and an excellent location, tend to have very positive experiences. The staff are generally described as "friendly and helpful," contributing to a welcoming atmosphere.

Promotional information for the Franciscan Guest House often centers on its affordability, prime location within walking distance to both the beach and town, and the unique, peaceful setting of the adjacent Monastery grounds. It's promoted as a "hidden gem" for those seeking a quiet retreat or a convenient base to explore the Kennebunks without the high prices of luxury resorts. The presence of a saltwater pool and complimentary breakfast adds to its competitive edge in the local market. The emphasis is on providing clean, comfortable, and inexpensive accommodations, making it an attractive option for a wide range of travelers.

In summary, the Franciscan Guest House provides a distinctive choice for anyone searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" in Kennebunk, Maine. It offers a unique blend of historical charm, peaceful natural surroundings, and practical amenities at an affordable price point. Despite its modest approach to decor in some areas, its cleanliness, excellent location within walking distance of both beach and town, and access to the beautiful Franciscan Monastery grounds make it a highly recommended option for travelers prioritizing value, convenience, and a tranquil atmosphere for their Maine coastal getaway.

Perhaps the worst property I have stayed in over 40 years of personal and business travel. Our room looked like a drunk cheap uncle had tried to convert his basement in the 60s. Whoever owns/runs this “hotel” quite clearly has made no attempt whatsoever to update or maintain the place and is simply cash cowing the location for all it is worth. Beds and linen look and feel 40 years old, ditto the bathroom complete with stand in shower tub, suicidal shower curtain and towels from the 1950s. Baseboards were simply nailed on plywood and left unfinished and unpainted, TV electric cord descends from a hole in the plastic ceiling tile. The walls and ceilings are paper thin, outdated heating and a/c noisy enough to keep one from sleeping. Nylon bedding has not been renewed for decades. The entire experience is as depressing as it is painful. Even “cheap” hotels today have to set way better standards than this. In it’s current state the Franciscan Guest house should be more honestly described as a hostel or dormitory. The owners should do the right thing and close this place for a gut renovation or simply demolish it and leave the hospitality business altogether.

If you are looking for an affordable, low key, quiet, peaceful, quaint and charming place to stay while in Kennebunkport then look no further! It’s also within walking distance of town so no need to drive and look for parking. The grounds contain the monastery with gift shop, plenty of walking trails and wildlife along the water, and shrines to pray at. The staff were absolutely wonderful and a big part of why I’ll be staying there again in the future. They were very accommodating to me and my service dog and truly made you feel safe and like family. That’s important for a solo traveler like myself. I highly recommend them!

Sometimes you come across something so plain and unassuming which surprisingly takes your breath away. I can’t begin to describe the wonderful memories your family will experience at the Franciscan Guest House. The compound is situated on the most prime real estate in Kennebunk, ME within short walking distance to the beach and Dock Square. Families, and especially kids, are free to roam and explore the nature filled boundaries of the property. Pack a picnic, stow some wine and hike the extensive walking trails along the river. Take in the view and share the moment with that special loved one. The Guest House accommodations once served as a boys high school under the Franciscan order. The staff is over the top polite. The accommodations are simple and very clean. If high-end is more your style, there is a renowned luxury inn and spa directly across the street. The Franciscan Guest House is that special place which enables you to connect with nature, decompress, simplify your life, reflect, and reconnect with your family or loved one. I guarantee you’ll be back. Also, please say hello to a Friar; they are very cool individuals.

My whole family of nearly 30 people stay here for a few days and it is always great. The food is good, but don't count on much gluten free stuff. The rooms are nice, and the daily Mass is wonderful. The lawn is perfect for games, or simply walking around. From here you can walk to the ocean, and there are paths on the back that are wheelchair accessible. This is a great Family vacation spot.
