Made a week's reservation for July in April '24 and sent in a 50% deposit. Asked about the cancellation policy since I was traveling with a very elderly couple. Had to cancel in May. Since then 3 emails have gone unanswered. Worst lodging experience ever ... and I've had some unpleasant ones. Probably pretty happy I didn't actually stay based on some other reviews.

Gleason Hotel Introduce

For individuals seeking accommodation on the "Hotels Near Of Me" platform, particularly within the culturally rich and historically significant Chautauqua Institution in New York, the Gleason Hotel offers a unique and traditional lodging experience. Located at 12 N Lake Dr, Chautauqua, NY 14722, USA, the Gleason Hotel is a classic lakefront inn, proudly servicing the community for over 50 years and designated as a Historic Inn and rooming house.

Environment and Location

The Gleason Hotel boasts an exceptional and highly sought-after location on North Lake Drive, directly on the shores of Chautauqua Lake and just north of the iconic Miller Bell Tower. This provides guests with a commanding presence and direct access to the lake, offering sweeping waterfront views from its beautiful porches. Chautauqua Institution is a gated community during its nine-week summer season, and the Gleason Hotel is situated within these grounds, meaning guests typically require a gate pass to access the full array of cultural and educational programs offered by the Institution. The environment is steeped in history and intellectual pursuits, characterized by Victorian-era architecture, lush greenery, and a strong sense of community centered around arts, education, religion, and recreation. The hotel's location offers a central yet private setting, with a dock just steps away for those interested in waterfront activities on Chautauqua Lake. The local bus route, which operates on a continuous 20-minute loop, passes directly in front of the hotel, providing convenient hop-on/hop-off access to various points within the Institution grounds. This makes it an ideal base for immersing oneself in the Chautauqua experience, with easy access to performance venues, lecture halls, and recreational areas.

Services and Amenities

The Gleason Hotel, as a historic inn and rooming house, provides a range of amenities designed to offer a comfortable and traditional stay, often catering to extended weekly rentals during the Chautauqua Institution season. While not a full-service modern hotel, it emphasizes a homely and community-oriented atmosphere. Key amenities include:

  • Room Features: All rooms are equipped with cable TV, air conditioning, and heat. Complimentary internet access (Wi-Fi) is available throughout the property. Room types vary, from single twin-size beds with private baths, to rooms with two twin beds or a double bed with private or shared baths, and even adjoining rooms. Efficiency apartments with a queen bed and kitchenette are also available. Some rooms feature a sink within the room itself.
  • Shared Facilities: A unique aspect of the Gleason Hotel is its two common kitchens, available for guests to use. These are well-equipped with a range, two refrigerators, microwaves, dishes, utensils, and a toaster oven, offering guests the flexibility to prepare their own meals.
  • Housekeeping and Laundry: Maid service is offered every other day to freshen up rooms. Laundry service is also available and is returned to guests either the same day or the next day.
  • Outdoor Spaces: The hotel features multiple shared porches, including those overlooking North Lake Avenue and, importantly, two overlooking Chautauqua Lake. These porches, some enclosed and some open-air, are popular spots for relaxing, reading, conversation, and enjoying the beautiful views. A dock on the lake is located directly behind the house, offering direct lake access.
  • Accessibility: While detailed accessibility information isn't fully comprehensive, the hotel offers a ground-floor apartment with separate entrances, an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living space, four queen bedrooms, and two baths (one with tub/shower combo, one with walk-in shower), implying some consideration for guests with mobility needs.

Customer reviews, however, raise significant concerns regarding the hotel's operational consistency and communication. Issues reported include unanswered emails, lack of receipts after payment, and, most critically, instances of double-booking rooms, even for long-standing reservations with paid deposits. This suggests that while the amenities offered are appealing, there may be challenges in the administrative and booking processes that potential guests should be aware of and consider when making reservations. The staff's helpfulness is mentioned as available, but the issues with booking indicate a potential breakdown in communication or organizational efficiency.

Features and Unique Aspects

The Gleason Hotel's most striking feature is its status as a "true Chautauqua Institution classic," having been part of the community for over 50 years. Its designation as a Historic Inn highlights its architectural charm and long-standing presence. The property's size and its "amazing location on the lake" just north of the Miller Bell Tower give it a commanding presence. The charming original architectural details and beautiful porches contribute significantly to its unique character, providing guests with a quintessential Chautauqua experience that harks back to an earlier era.

The presence of two common kitchens is a distinctive feature, offering a more communal and self-sufficient lodging option than typical hotels, which can be particularly attractive for guests on longer stays or those who prefer to prepare their own meals. The availability of various room types, from single rooms to efficiency apartments and even separate house rentals (like the Lincoln Park House), caters to diverse group sizes and preferences, making it flexible for families or larger parties visiting the Institution. The sweeping lake views from shared porches and direct lake access via the dock are major drawcards, emphasizing the outdoor and scenic aspects of a Chautauqua vacation.

However, the significant negative feedback regarding booking reliability and communication is a critical "feature" that prospective guests must consider. The unpredictability of reservations and lack of responsiveness to inquiries, as described in customer reviews, stand in stark contrast to the expected hospitality and service of a lodging establishment. This suggests a potential operational challenge that guests should be prepared for, potentially requiring persistent follow-up when booking.

Promotional Information

While the Gleason Hotel's direct website and booking platforms might offer specific promotions, based on the information available and the nature of this historic inn, it's generally geared towards weekly rentals, especially during the summer season when the Chautauqua Institution is most active. The pricing structure often reflects weekly rates, as seen in examples like $950/week for a single twin room or $1700/week for efficiency apartments. Guests can inquire about:

  • Weekly Rates: The primary promotional structure appears to be based on weekly stays, which are generally more cost-effective than nightly rates if available.
  • Off-Season Availability: While the primary season is July and August, the hotel might offer different rates or more flexible booking options during the shoulder seasons (e.g., late spring or early fall) when the Institution is less busy.
  • Direct Booking Inquiries: Given the communication issues highlighted in reviews, direct phone contact at (786) 317-3773 or +1 786-317-3773 is paramount for booking and confirming details. It is advisable to get confirmation in writing and to follow up diligently.
  • Special Event Packages: If the hotel collaborates with the Chautauqua Institution or local events, it might offer packages that combine lodging with event tickets, though this is not explicitly stated.
  • Long-Term Rentals: Beyond weekly stays, the inclusion of efficiency apartments and separate house rentals suggests options for even longer-term accommodations, which might come with different pricing structures.

Prospective guests are strongly advised to contact the Gleason Hotel directly at (786) 317-3773 or +1 786-317-3773 to confirm availability, pricing, cancellation policies, and to receive written confirmation of any bookings and payments. Given the historical customer feedback, proactive and persistent communication is recommended to ensure that reservations are honored and to avoid any last-minute surprises, especially for crucial vacation plans. While the Gleason Hotel offers a charming and authentic Chautauqua experience due to its location and historic nature, guests should be mindful of the reported challenges in its booking and administrative processes.

Book at Your Own Risk. I am sorry to say, it is completely unpredictable whether the Gleason will honor the rooms or dates that you reserve. In December 2023 we booked two adjoining rooms for eight nights in July 2024, paying half at the time of booking and the rest in March. For months, our requests for a receipt were ignored. Two days before our arrival, we received a text and learned that our rooms had been double-booked with another party (as well as having the last date dropped with no notice); we also learned that unfortunately this is a frequent occurrence. Had we not been able to stay with family instead, either our or someone else's Chautauqua vacation would have been ruined.

I spent a week at the Gleason in August 2023. My family was nearby so I was spending considerable time in my family's house. However, I found Bruce the hotel owner to be very accomodating and quite generous with sharing what his hotel had to offer. Having observed his wife with others I imagined her to be the same. In a heartbeat, I would return there! In addition, I liked the people who booked there. I was sorry I couldn't spend more time with them but I told myself there will be more time for me in the future at the Gleason. Thank you, Bruce. Mary Claudia Wall New York City

Terrible experience. Dirty, out dated, not up to code with breakers flipping off, dangerous balconies, bathrooms out of order, leaky faucets, no TP or garbage can liners in bathroom, food on our bedroom floor, no keys available for some rooms, expected to leave doors unlocked. Parking situation was never explained to us as you can't park anywhere within the institution. Had to park outside the institution and ended up paying $50. No one was even there to check us in or help when we arrived.

A grand hotel has lost its luster. Cheap sheets, bedding and towels from the dollar store. Rooms are not cleaned daily and there is NOT central air as posted on the sight. Photos on the sight are of the old charming Gleason,, not the Gleason today.
