I recently stayed at the Gundersen Hotel & Suites in La Crosse and had mixed feelings about the experience. The good: The rooms were very clean, modern, and comfortable. The hotel itself is well-maintained, with nice facilities that felt updated and thoughtfully designed. The location is especially convenient if you’re visiting the hospital or nearby areas, and there’s plenty of parking. The not-so-good: Unfortunately, the front desk staff left a lot to be desired. They were unwelcoming and unhelpful throughout our stay. It really set a negative tone. One of the biggest issues was breakfast. We went down at 8:45 AM (well within the posted breakfast hours), and almost everything was empty—eggs, waffles, meat, and fruit were all gone. The staff were clearly aware but didn’t make any effort to restock or communicate with guests about it. Even more frustrating, they were actively draining juice trays and restocking maple syrup bottles—but not replenishing any of the actual food. It felt careless and dismissive of the guest experience. Bottom line: While the rooms and amenities are solid, the poor customer service and lack of attention to guest needs—especially at the front desk and during breakfast—really took away from the experience. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel unless major improvements are made in staff training and guest care.

Jul 27, 2025 · Chelsea JessenMade our visit to the Dr. way less stressful than if we had to drive in early in the morning from our home an hour away. Parking was plentiful and the lobby was welcoming, but there was no one at the desk when we arrived. After waiting a few minutes TWO people appeared and we were checked in and welcomed. The room was spacious enough, clean, comfortable, and quiet once the traffic three stories below thinned out. We liked that breakfast was available starting at 6am having recently stayed elsewhere with no "in-house" breakfast at all and another that didn't get going until 7. The hotel seemed to only have three luggage carts, all of which were apparently in use when we checked out mid-morning, which made for a minor hassle. All in all the convenince and comfort outweighed any shortcomings, so we would be happy to book here again if the need again arises.
Jun 14, 2025 · Joel ShoemakerMultiple families of our recently stayed for 5 nights for a family member in ICU. The rooms are clean and nice size. All family members enjoyed the morning breakfast and the swimming pool. If you have a family member staying at the hospital this hotel was very convenient. You don’t have to go outside and deal with traffic between buildings. Make sure to book directly and not 3rd party. One, it’s less expensive to book directly and you have more flexibility on room choice. We had two young children with and there’s a wagon to use during your stay to get between buildings. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Jun 18, 2025 · Mary HenryWhat a pleasant surprise! Just traveling through LaCrosse and stayed 1 night. Rooms were large and comfortable, great bed and pillows. Staff were professional and friendly. Breakfast was good! Prices reasonable. Would definitely come back if in the area!
Jun 05, 2025 · Carla TaylorI have used this hotel’s venue room multiple times, and have always had a good experience until today. I booked this room yesterday, and left a valuable in the closet that automatically locks. When I called today to retrieve it the front desk woman’s demeanor was very poor. She had me wait on the phone for 2 minutes and says she doesn’t see it. I ended up just showing up so I could look myself since I know I tucked it in a corner of the closet. When I arrived both manager and front desk woman were speaking about me. When I asked if I could look myself they refused, and told me there was no possible way it could have been in the closet because it was locked. It wasn’t locked when I used it. These items total $500+ on the low end. This point I believe they were taken. Absolutely unacceptable behavior from management, and employees. Disgusting behavior. DO NOT use this hotel.
