I use to live there in the early 80's. I can only imagine the difference between then and now. I agree with this whole panel. Roaches, mice, mold plagued the building back then and (if nothing has been done about it, and I'm not talking about masking the problem) even now. They would have to rebuild the building from ground up to get rid of the infestations. However, if they do that not one person there now would be able to afford living there. I also agree with it being a building of people that pretty much stuck together, and I mean EVERYONE! You can open up each door to every room and it would be like one big house that you can freely go in and out of. We all ate together and the kids played together like a big huge family. Those were surely the days. I'll be lying if I did not say everyone had their share of problems, but at the end WE WERE A FAMILY!

Jonquil Hotel Introduce

For many residents of Illinois, finding a place to call home in a major city like Chicago can be a significant challenge, especially with rising housing costs. The Jonquil Hotel, located in the dynamic Rogers Park neighborhood, stands as a unique institution that addresses this very issue. While its name might suggest a conventional hotel for temporary stays, The Jonquil Hotel operates with a different and deeply important purpose. It is a single-room occupancy (SRO) building, part of a larger mission by the non-profit organization Good News Partners to provide transitional and affordable housing to those in need. This model is crucial for helping individuals and families establish stability and build a path toward permanent, independent living.

The history of The Jonquil Hotel is rooted in community and transformation. Acquired by Good News Partners in the 1980s, the building was once a place facing significant challenges. Through dedicated effort and a commitment to social service, it has been repurposed into a safe and supportive environment. It is described by those involved as a "community oasis" where neighbors can become like family. This is a place where people who have been hindered by past trials can find a safe respite and a supportive network. The Jonquil Hotel is a stepping stone, providing a place for residents to find their footing before moving into their own homes. The focus is not on a luxury experience, but on creating a foundation of care and community that is often hard to find.

The experience of living at The Jonquil Hotel, as reflected in various accounts, has historically been characterized by a strong sense of communal support. Residents have described a unique environment where people "stuck together" like a "big huge family," sharing meals and watching out for one another's children. This sense of collective support is a testament to the community-focused approach of Good News Partners. However, it is also important to acknowledge that the building has faced significant challenges over the years. Some past residents have recalled issues with the physical state of the building, and there have been serious allegations regarding the application process for prospective tenants. These experiences highlight the complex realities and ongoing struggles faced by institutions that provide low-income housing.

The Jonquil Hotel is situated at 1600 W Jonquil Terrace, Chicago, IL 60626, USA. This address places it within the Rogers Park neighborhood, a diverse and bustling community on Chicago's far north side. For locals familiar with the area, Rogers Park is known for its vibrant cultural scene, beautiful stretches of beach along Lake Michigan, and excellent public transportation options. The hotel's location offers residents convenient access to local amenities, including grocery stores, shops, restaurants, and parks.

Accessibility to and from The Jonquil Hotel is primarily facilitated by Chicago's extensive public transit system. The property is located within a reasonable distance of CTA bus routes and the 'L' train lines, which are essential for connecting residents to the rest of the city for work, appointments, and other necessary travel. The proximity to major transit corridors is a crucial factor for a population that may rely on public transportation. The neighborhood itself is known for being very walkable, which allows residents to easily access nearby services and community resources on foot. This strategic location in a well-connected and amenity-rich neighborhood is vital to the mission of providing a stable living situation, as it reduces isolation and promotes integration into the wider community.

As a single-room occupancy building, The Jonquil Hotel provides a specific set of services centered around its mission of transitional and affordable housing.

  • Single-Room Occupancy (SRO) Housing: The primary service is providing individual rooms for residents, offering a private space within a supportive community setting.

  • Community Support: The Jonquil Hotel is designed to be more than just a residence; it is a community where neighbors are encouraged to form a support network for one another.

  • Transitional Housing: The hotel serves as a key component of Good News Partners' housing continuum, helping residents transition from interim housing toward more permanent, independent living solutions.

  • Affordable Rates: The housing provided is designed to be affordable, with rates that are significantly below the current market average for the city of Chicago, making it accessible for those in the lower economic bracket.

  • Social Service Integration: While not a traditional hotel, the property is part of an organization that provides a variety of social services aimed at helping residents gain stability and independence.

The Jonquil Hotel's main features and highlights are a direct reflection of its role as a supportive community rather than a traditional lodging establishment.

  • A Place of Community: The building's greatest highlight is the sense of family and belonging that has been fostered among its residents, creating a vital social support system.

  • Affordable and Accessible Housing: It offers a rare and crucial service in a city with high housing costs by providing an affordable and safe place to live.

  • Transitional Living Model: The hotel is a critical part of a successful model that helps residents move toward self-sufficiency and permanent housing.

  • Dedicated Non-Profit Operation: The Jonquil Hotel is operated by Good News Partners, an organization with a clear and compassionate mission to serve those dealing with homelessness and housing instability.

  • Historic Community Presence: The building has a long history in the Rogers Park neighborhood and has served as a central point of community for its residents for decades.

I paid the $50 for the application fee, called a few times receiving promises of return calls and answers (and they suggested I more than qualified), and a month after paying the application fee the communication line went cold. Looking online it appears they keep 3 units empty at all times to scam potential renters into forking over money for application fees, which probably adds up to more than they would get for renting the actual units. Like many religious and social service institutions, this one is another scam set out to take advantage of people, especially people live in the lower economic bracket.
