I would not recommend staying here. The building was freezing—I’m not even sure if there’s heat. When we asked the host for extra blankets, they told us to search the property ourselves, but there wasn’t a single extra blanket or pillow available. The worst part was the loud scratching and clawing sounds coming from inside the walls at night, which made it nearly impossible to sleep. It was honestly unsettling and made the whole experience even worse. The location is good, but the place itself is uncomfortable and poorly managed. I’m just glad I only stayed one night.

The Melrose, Bed & Bath Introduce

For those exploring the "Hotels Near Of Me" options in the charming seaside town of Ocean Grove, New Jersey, The Melrose, Bed & Bath presents itself as a notable lodging choice. Located at 34 Seaview Ave, Ocean Grove, NJ 07756, USA, this property aims to offer a comfortable and convenient stay within a beautifully renovated Victorian home. Guests can reach The Melrose at (732) 898-2232 or +1 732-898-2232 for inquiries. It's important for prospective guests to note that The Melrose operates with a distinct approach to hospitality, emphasizing technology-driven convenience and a prime location.

Environment and Ambiance

The Melrose, Bed & Bath is situated in the heart of Ocean Grove, a historic Victorian community celebrated for its well-preserved architecture and tranquil atmosphere. The building itself is a fully renovated Victorian home, aiming to blend historical charm with modern living. Its location is a significant draw, being just one block from Ocean Grove Beach and the boardwalk. This means guests have excellent access to the ocean and the serene coastal environment. The property is also adjacent to Founders Park, featuring a flowing fountain, which adds to the picturesque setting. Views from some rooms or common areas may include glimpses of the ocean, Wesley Lake, The Stone Pony, and downtown Asbury Park. The property features three covered terraces where guests can sit and enjoy the ocean breeze. While the charm of a Victorian home is evident in its design, potential guests should be aware that, as with many older buildings, some guests have mentioned concerns regarding factors like heating and sound insulation. The Inn aims to provide a peaceful and quiet environment, strictly enforcing quiet hours from 10 PM to 8 AM, and monitors interior hallways and exterior porches with video surveillance and noise monitoring systems.

Services and Amenities

The Melrose, Bed & Bath distinguishes itself with a focus on modern, self-sufficient services, largely leveraging smart home technology for guest convenience. Instead of a traditional manned front desk throughout the day, the property utilizes a contactless check-in and check-out process. Guests receive electronic access to their rooms via personal keycodes, which activate upon check-in time. This approach grants guests flexibility and independence during their stay. The property strives to ensure everything guests need is waiting inside their room upon arrival. For inquiries, guests can communicate via email or voice messages, with emergent messages returned promptly.

Key amenities designed to enhance comfort and convenience include:

  • High-speed WiFi (1000/1000 mbps internet connection) throughout the entire house and on exterior porches, facilitated by state-of-the-art WiFi beacons.
  • Smart TVs in each suite offering free access to Hulu Live or the ability for guests to sign into their favorite streaming services.
  • Smart locks for keyless entry, eliminating the need for physical keys.
  • Individual climate control within each suite, allowing guests to manage their own heating and air conditioning settings.
  • Private bathrooms for each room. It's important to note that while some rooms feature en-suite bathrooms, others may have a private bath located directly across the hall.
  • Rooms are equipped with amenities such as refrigerators, and some larger suites may also include full kitchens with an oven, stovetop, and dishwasher.
  • Basic toiletries like shampoo are typically provided.
  • Safety features, including carbon monoxide detectors, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits.
  • Free street parking is available for guests.
  • Beach passes are offered to guests and are sold at cost ($7/person/day), requiring cash payment and advance request (at least one day prior to arrival) for them to be left in the room.

Features and Uniqueness

The most prominent feature of The Melrose, Bed & Bath is its exceptional location. Being just one block from the beach and boardwalk offers immediate access to Ocean Grove’s pristine shoreline. Furthermore, it's steps away from the walking bridge to downtown Asbury Park, providing guests with unparalleled access to its vibrant scene of live music venues (like The Stone Pony), hundreds of restaurants, bars, and shops. This walkability allows guests to enjoy both the peaceful charm of Ocean Grove and the lively atmosphere of Asbury Park with ease. The property’s commitment to smart home technology offers a modern twist on the traditional bed & bath experience, providing guests with control and convenience. While generally operating with a "no pets" policy, some listings for The Melrose indicate certain rooms or units might be pet-friendly (allowing 1 or 2 dogs for an additional fee, with restrictions on cats), though it's crucial for guests to confirm this directly with the property before booking if traveling with pets, as policies can vary by specific unit. The renovated Victorian aesthetic, complete with covered terraces, provides a charming backdrop for a Jersey Shore vacation.

Promotional Information and Guest Insights

Given its operational model as a self-check-in property that functions more like a vacation rental with individual units, direct "promotional packages" in the traditional hotel sense may be less common. However, its attractive location and modern amenities serve as key selling points. Prices can vary based on room type, season, and booking platform. Guests should check various booking sites for current rates and availability. It's important for prospective guests to be fully aware of the self-service nature and review past guest feedback to set appropriate expectations.

Insights from real customer reviews present a mixed picture, reflecting both the strengths and potential challenges of the property:

  • Location: Consistently praised as "prime" and "great," being steps from the beach and boardwalk, and a very short walk to Asbury Park. This is a significant positive for almost all guests.
  • Technology & Convenience: Aspects like smart locks for easy access, in-room climate control, smart TVs with streaming options, and strong WiFi are generally appreciated by guests who value modern conveniences and self-sufficiency.
  • Ambiance & Aesthetics: Many guests find the renovated Victorian home to be beautiful and quaint, appreciating the outdoor spaces like the covered terraces.
  • Customer Service: While some guests have praised the communication and responsiveness, others have expressed difficulties reaching the host or receiving assistance for immediate needs (e.g., extra blankets). The self-check-in model means less direct interaction with on-site staff compared to traditional hotels.
  • Comfort Concerns: Some guests have reported issues with heating, especially during colder months, describing the building as "freezing." This suggests potential inconsistencies in climate control or insulation in certain units.
  • Noise/Pest Concerns: A significant concern raised by one guest involved loud "scratching and clawing sounds" coming from inside the walls at night, which severely impacted sleep and caused an "unsettling" experience. This is a critical point for potential guests to consider.
  • Room Discrepancies & Management Issues: One review alleges being given a smaller room than paid for and issues with refund processes, describing the experience as a "scam" and highlighting poor management. This indicates potential issues with booking accuracy and conflict resolution.
  • Bathroom Layouts: Some rooms have private bathrooms located across the hall, which can be an unexpected "surprise" for guests expecting en-suite facilities.
  • Overall Experience: While some guests have had positive stays, highlighting the cleanliness and quietness, others have found the place uncomfortable and poorly managed, leading to a strong recommendation against staying.

In conclusion, The Melrose, Bed & Bath offers a unique lodging experience within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category in Ocean Grove, capitalizing on its fantastic location and modern smart home amenities in a historic setting. However, prospective guests should be mindful of the self-service model, potential inconsistencies in room comfort (specifically heating), and very serious concerns raised by some past guests regarding noise disturbances and customer service challenges, particularly around booking discrepancies. It is advisable to thoroughly review recent guest feedback and contact the property directly with any specific questions or concerns before booking to ensure it aligns with individual expectations for a comfortable stay.

First let me start off by saying the location is perfect, literally a block from the beach and the view from the balcony over looking the water is very nice. I will say that the pictures on google are very deceiving, the entrance way is a small sitting area with a coffee pot and some coffee pods, and two little couches. Walking down a hallway with doors on either side that are rooms. We enter our room, what I walk into is literally a bathroom, I thought we entered the wrong room at first, it took a second or two until I realized I had to look behind the door I just opened to the bedroom. The bed was comfortable, wobbly, and needed to have its legs replaced, the pillows were lumpy, lumpy like you just stuffed some laundry in a pillow case and called it a day. So, if I were you I would bring my own pillows. The bedroom, or room with a bed in it, was small, but did have a nice little rack to keep our bags and clothing hanging. Other than that, there was no storage. The bathroom that you enter into did have a good size mini fridge, which was nice. Now, the portion of that bathroom that you shower and use the toilet is another story. I am 6 ft tall about 230 pounds, my girlfriend is also 6ft tall, the shower stall is no bigger than a phone booth. I literally had to step out of the shower to wash my feet it was so tiny. The toilet was stuffed into a corner, in which was very tight and difficult to utilize. The small bathroom is one thing, but the ants, and ant trap in the bathroom was a bit much, we had dozens of ants in the bathroom as our weekend went along. For spending nearly $500 I expected a little more space, no ants, and an overall better room. Especially since the pictures make it seem like you are getting a top of the line, modern, spacious room. I would recommend this spot ONLY for the location. I went off season. I gave it two stars for service due to not having to interact with any staff, nor was there any staff to interact with. They did send me several e-mails prior to check in with proper clear instructions, which was a positive. It seems as if they converted as many spaces into rooms to max out their income. Hope this review helps!

The location is excellent but that's the only good thing....I'm sad to say that I've never had a worse experience then when we stayed at The Melrose and I LOVE Ocean Grove! Apparently it used to be great when owned by a kind, local Ocean Grove family. Now, there is no one on site to address issues like the barely functional AC during a heat wave and no cups for coffee, a severely slanted floor which made the bed very uncomfortable and only half a roll of toilet tissue, a few TINY towels, no beach accessories like chairs or umbrellas. The shower leaked into the room below and when i saw someone coming in to clean, I politely went to inform her of the leak and she started screaming at me like a hysterical banshee - her name was Sheila. I could go on, but please, save your money and your peace of mind and avoid The Melrose!

Do not book a stay here unless you want to waste a bunch of money for a filthy room accompanied by a cold shower, AND awful service. I can’t say I’ve ever had a worse experience. Not sure where to even begin. Just save yourself the money because if you have any issues or need a refund.. the host will dismiss your needs over and over again. Thanks to airbnb I was able to get my money back. The room didn’t even look like the pictures posted, was a lot smaller and the extra rooms like couch are NOT in the private tiny residence you will be spending a fortune on. I had a better experience and room at the motel I was forced to stay at the night of my Melrose reservation.
