Amazing dinner. I am shocked this is my first time in. There aren't a lot of nice fine dining on the off-season on Cape Cod. I googled and saw the menu, and I was sold. Our server Farthi (excuse my spelling) was amazing as well. I will definitely be back and highly recommend
For those searching for "Hotels Near Me" in the charming and historic village of Sandwich, Massachusetts, the Belfry Inne and Bistro presents itself as a truly distinctive option, offering not just lodging but also a celebrated fine dining experience. Located at 6 Jarves St, Sandwich, MA 02563, USA, this establishment stands out due to its unique architectural setting and commitment to a memorable guest experience.
The Belfry Inne and Bistro is not your typical hotel; it's a collection of three historic buildings that together create a rich and varied ambiance. The most striking of these is 'The Abbey,' a beautifully converted 1901 Catholic church. This building is the heart of the Bistro, boasting soaring ceilings, elaborate stained-glass windows, and intricate gothic woodwork. The grandeur of the former church provides a dramatic and romantic setting for dining, with the original choir balcony adding to its unique charm. The scent of the oak wood, hand-carved by local sailors, is said to still mingle with the aromas of the cuisine, creating a truly immersive experience.
Beyond The Abbey, the property includes 'The Painted Lady,' an 1872 Victorian home featuring whimsical guest rooms, and 'The Village Inn,' an 1827 colonial building offering comfortable, "Cape cottage" style accommodations. This combination of structures means that guests can choose from a variety of room styles, each individually decorated, with premium bedding and down comforters, offering amenities such as fireplaces or spa baths in some selections. The diverse architectural elements contribute to an overall atmosphere that is both historic and inviting, making it a unique destination in Cape Cod.
While the overall ambiance is generally praised for its beauty and historical significance, some customer experiences highlight specific areas where the environment may fall short of expectations. One review, for instance, describes a less-than-ideal seating arrangement during a peak dining period, where a family felt relegated to a "backroom or storage room converted into a dining area." This suggests that while the main dining areas are undeniably stunning, guests should be mindful of specific seating allocations, especially during busy times, if the iconic church ambiance is a priority.
The Belfry Inne and Bistro aims to provide comprehensive services for both its overnight guests and dining patrons. For hotel guests, the Inn offers free Wi-Fi in all rooms and public areas, complimentary parking, and a continental breakfast. Room amenities include air conditioning, private bathrooms with free toiletries and hair dryers, and in-room entertainment with LED TVs. The front desk operates with limited hours but offers services like luggage storage, concierge assistance, and dry cleaning/laundry services. Meeting rooms are available, indicating its capacity for small events or business needs.
The culinary services are a major highlight of the Belfry Inne and Bistro. The Bistro itself is renowned for its fine New American cuisine, with a menu that frequently changes to incorporate local, seasonal offerings from New England. The kitchen is guided by Chef Nicci, who has a background in acclaimed restaurants and emphasizes fresh, sustainable ingredients and classic French/European techniques. The menu features a diverse selection, including options like local Cape Cod oysters, seafood towers, foie gras torchon, various salads, and entrees such as sesame-seared yellowfin tuna, New Zealand rack of lamb, and Black Angus filet mignon. Vegetarian options, such as Roasted Eggplant Napoleon and Honeycrisp Apple Salad, are also available, showing an effort to cater to diverse palates. The presence of a bar with an extensive wine list complements the dining experience, and live piano music adds to the relaxed atmosphere.
Customer reviews frequently commend the service. One diner described their server, Farthi, as "amazing" and highly recommended the experience, noting the excellent food and service. This indicates a general high standard of attentiveness and professionalism from the staff. However, the aforementioned negative review about the Christmas Eve dinner points to a potential inconsistency in service delivery, particularly regarding guest comfort and transparency about seating arrangements, which is a crucial aspect of hospitality, especially for special occasions.
The defining feature of the Belfry Inne and Bistro is its dual identity as both a historic inn and a high-caliber bistro, particularly the integration of the dining experience within the converted church. This adaptive reuse of a historic religious building into a modern hospitality venue is a significant draw. The stained-glass windows and architectural details of The Abbey provide an unparalleled backdrop for fine dining, making it a destination in itself.
The inn comprises 16-20 individually decorated rooms spread across the three distinct buildings, offering guests a choice of ambiance, from the whimsy of The Painted Lady to the traditional charm of The Village Inn and the grand elegance of The Abbey. This variety allows for a personalized stay experience. The Belfry also offers amenities such as a bar/lounge and a game room, providing spaces for relaxation and entertainment beyond the guest rooms. Its location in Historic Sandwich Village means it's within walking distance to local attractions like the Sandwich Glass Museum, making it a convenient base for exploring the area.
The culinary offerings extend beyond the main Bistro, with other potential dining venues under the same hospitality group, such as the Next Door Burger Bar and The Seal (a tapas venue), though the primary focus for fine dining remains the Bistro within The Abbey. This diverse culinary portfolio adds to the overall appeal of the establishment.
The Belfry Inne and Bistro consistently promotes itself as a romantic dining destination and a unique lodging experience on Cape Cod, often highlighted in "Best of Cape Cod" lists and receiving awards such as TripAdvisor's "Traveler's Choice." They emphasize their historic and magical setting, impeccable customer service, and world-class, locally sourced cuisine. The establishment often garners praise for its ability to create a memorable and authentic New England village feel.
Promotional materials highlight the exquisite menu, the dramatic church setting, and the unique and comfortable accommodations. They also promote the venue for special occasions like weddings and rehearsal dinners, given its picturesque scenery and ability to host events for up to 100 guests with an outdoor terrace option. The inn also offers specific services like chef-curated menus and event staff support for such gatherings. Direct contact via phone at (508) 888-8550 or mobile phone +1 508-888-8550 is encouraged for inquiries about dining or accommodations.
However, potential visitors should be aware of some considerations based on customer feedback. While many reviews are overwhelmingly positive, the negative experience concerning cramped seating on a busy night suggests that managing expectations and perhaps inquiring about seating arrangements for special occasions could be beneficial. The detailed description of a "sorry excuse of a Christmas tree" and "awful forsaken torn furniture" in a less desirable dining area points to potential inconsistencies in upkeep or attention to detail in areas not considered the primary dining space. This feedback underscores the importance of the initial impression and overall consistency of a "fine dining" experience. Despite this, the overwhelming majority of reviews highlight the Belfry Inne and Bistro as a highly recommended establishment for its delicious food, beautiful ambiance, and attentive service, particularly for those seeking a unique and romantic escape on Cape Cod.

Mar 28, 2025 · J MMy family had an extremely unpleasant experience this past Christmas eve dinner. We were seated in a table that seemed like the backroom or storage room converted into a dining area just to accommodate diners. Another family also complained to the server about this. We thought, like the previous year, that we would be able to admire the beauty of the stained-glass windows of this old church and its over-all ambiance BUT to our dismay we were buried, shoved in a closet. Have we been informed that we were going to be hidden in a closet, we would've cancelled this $400 dinner. It was absurd. They should've NEVER done this to patrons. It was appalling, on Christmas eve, no less. The Christmas tree in the main dining room was beautiful but in the storage room across our table was this sorry excuse of a Christmas tree with about 3 ornaments with one strand of garland hanging off of a branch to the ground curled up to a crumpled tablecloth under the tree. The chair my husband had was this awful forsaken torn furniture. And to call it Fine Dining was insulting! It was inconceivable! We would not recommend this restaurant nor come back here anymore.
Jan 28, 2025 · AFWe had a New Year's Eve dinner that unfortunately was disappointing. We visited two years ago with a fantastic experience. The first two courses were lukewarm, and the filet was also lukewarm with a very tough piece of meat. For the price, it was not acceptable. The service and atmosphere were wonderful.
Jan 01, 2025 · Ruth NickersonThe food was delicious and the atmosphere was cozy while being more of a 5 star establishment. The thing that interfered with the total ambiance and positive impression was the hostess who is the first impression and the face of the establishment. She was wearing a dress that barely covered her crotch. We felt like we were walking into A strip joint and not a 5 star restaurant.
Oct 28, 2024 · Cait GravesWe stopped in for drinks the other day and I was reminded how inventive and charming this old church turned restaurant is. Beautiful wood work, stained glass, and great drinks made this a great stop at the end of the day with the girls. We only had drinks so I can not comment on the food but it smelled good!
