Environment and Ambiance: A Historic Home with a Cinematic Twist

Buffalo Bill's House is a beautiful, three-story, four-bedroom Queen Anne Victorian home built in 1910, situated on almost two acres of lush private property in a quiet neighborhood in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania. The house itself is described as magnificent, cozy, and incredibly welcoming, retaining many of its original aesthetic attributes that were seen in the five-time Academy Award-winning film. Its location at the base of the Laurel Highlands offers scenic views of the Youghiogheny River, and it's within walking distance to Hazelbaker's Bottom Yough Outfitters and the Great Allegheny Passage walking & biking trails, providing a serene natural backdrop despite its dark cinematic fame.

The ambiance inside is a fascinating blend of historic Victorian charm and immersive movie-themed decor. The owners have made great efforts to capture the essence of the filming location, meticulously ensuring attention to detail throughout the home. This includes saving and framing portions of original wallpaper from the kitchen and foyer that were present during filming, and incorporating home decor reminiscent of the movie and its characters. Every corner of the house offers nods to "The Silence of the Lambs," from subtle artwork to more overt props and memorabilia, creating an atmosphere that is both cozy and thrilling for film enthusiasts.

The property extends beyond the house itself, featuring an extensive outdoor space. Guests can enjoy a fire pit, a charcoal grill, a picnic area, a pergola, a gazebo, two water fountains, and even a vintage train caboose to explore. There are also stunning views of the Youghiogheny River. The blend of the quiet, residential setting with the unique movie-themed elements provides an unparalleled atmosphere for a truly memorable stay.

Features: Cinematic Authenticity and Entertainment

The features of Buffalo Bill's House are truly what set it apart in the "Hotels Near Of Me" category:

  • Interactive Film Sets: The basement has been recreated as an interactive film set, mimicking Buffalo Bill's "sewing room" and the infamous pit where his victims were kept. Guests can find a vintage Singer sewing machine, 1980s mannequins, costumes, an American flag backdrop, a working disco ball, and motion-activated speakers playing "Goodbye Horses," allowing for immersive photo opportunities and scene recreation. A replica of the well, designed by Tom Savini's Special Effects Makeup School, allows guests to get inside for photo ops.
  • Retro Game Room ("Buffalo Bill's Playhouse"): Located in the attic/loft area, this entertainment hub features an 85″ Q-LED Smart TV with state-of-the-art surround sound, over 800 DVDs and VHS tapes (including classic horror films), classic arcade games, and a pool table. This provides an unexpected and greatly appreciated surprise, especially for younger guests, as one reviewer noted their 15-year-old loved setting personal records on the games.
  • Movie Memorabilia & Decor: The house is adorned with film memorabilia, artifacts from filming, and on-brand decor (such as Chianti bottles or fava bean wall art), enhancing the thematic experience.
  • "Then and Now" Book: A book outlining movie filming locations in and around Pittsburgh, along with "then and now" film scenes, is provided for guests, allowing them to visualize exact filming spots within the house.
  • Outdoor Amenities: The two-acre property includes a fire pit, charcoal grill, picnic area, pergola, gazebo, two water fountains, and a vintage train caboose, offering plenty of outdoor activities and relaxation spots.
  • Proximity to Local Attractions: Beyond the movie connection, the house is close to the Great Allegheny Passage trail for hiking and biking, and within a short drive of Ohiopyle State Park and Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural masterpieces like Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob.
  • Character-Themed Bedrooms: Each of the four bedrooms is themed after a character from the movie (Buffalo Bill, Clarice, Hannibal, Precious), with period-correct furniture and subtle "Silence" accents, adding to the immersive experience.

The owners of the Buffalo Bill House make great efforts to capture the essence of the filming location. We appreciated the attention to detail instilled throughout the home, including saving and framing portions of wallpaper on the walls of the kitchen and foyer during the filming. Touring the basement was truly an experience, the sights and sounds jump off the screen and come alive with the recreation of Buffalo Bill's sewing room, as well as the recreated pit where his victims were kept. Everything from a "Silence of the Lambs" trivia book to a book outlining movie filming locations in and around Pittsburgh made an already stellar stay even more so. The home itself is magnificent, cozy and incredibly welcoming - while staying true to the movie's theme, with home decor reminiscent of the movie and its characters. The movie room and arcade were an unexpected, but greatly appreciated surprise. Our 15-year-old daughter especially liked setting personal records on the various games. She loved it so much she asked if we could stay permanently. I have a feeling we'll be back.

“Wow — staying at Buffalo Bill’s House was absolutely incredible! From the second I walked through the door, I couldn’t believe how stunning and well-preserved the place was. Built in 1910, the home still has so much original charm, but it’s also been transformed into the ultimate fan experience. Every single room felt like a step back in time — and it was spotless and beautifully maintained! But honestly, the basement was the real showstopper. The interactive well they created is insane — it’s made out of real granite, and the attention to detail is unreal. There’s even the pulley with the lotion bucket, scratch marks on the walls, and creepy sound effects straight from the movie! I even got to dress up and reenact a scene, complete with props like the dog “Precious.” It was seriously like stepping into The Silence of the Lambs in the best (and creepiest) way possible. If you’re a horror fan — or even just love cool, off-the-wall places — you HAVE to experience Buffalo Bill’s House. It’s hands down one of the most unique and thrilling stays I’ve ever had!”

Went here on a Silence of the Lambs tour. The nice tour guide (i can’t remember his name) worked on the film, and was very informative and super cool. If you like SOTL I would highly recommend going on the tour. You can also stay here over night as well.
