THE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE – STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! If I could give ZERO stars, I absolutely would. This so-called “hotel” was the WORST place I’ve ever stayed in. The room was DISGUSTING — filthy, with a horrible moldy smell and visible dirt everywhere. The sheets were stained, the towels were filthy, and there was absolutely NO room service, despite being advertised. The so-called “manager” was beyond rude — completely unprofessional, sarcastic, and dismissive. Instead of helping us, he made jokes and acted like our complaints were a joke. Every single day, I was charged mysterious extra fees with fake excuses. When I asked about them, they said it was “just policy” — total lies. And to make it worse, they SAVED my card information without my permission. I had to cancel my card because they STOLE all my money bit by bit, until my account was completely drained. And the charges kept coming even after that. They also STOLE my personal belongings from the room. When I reported it, they said I must have “misplaced them” and basically blamed me — completely outrageous. But the absolute worst part? They HUMILIATED my family at the front desk just because we’re not from the U.S. — we’re not American, and they treated us like garbage. They mocked us, refused to help, and treated us with pure disrespect just for being foreigners. This place is a total NIGHTMARE run by horrible, dishonest people. It’s filthy, unsafe, and run like a scam. I truly hope this hotel gets shut down — no one deserves to go through what we went through. STAY AWAY. FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY.
When considering options within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category in Central Massachusetts, The Colonial Hotel in Gardner, MA, located at 625 Betty Spring Rd, Gardner, MA 01440, USA, often comes to mind. This 3-star hotel is a prominent fixture in the area, known for its distinct Federal-style redbrick architecture and its role as a significant venue for weddings and corporate events. For inquiries, the hotel can be reached at (978) 630-2500 or +1 978-630-2500.
The Colonial Hotel presents a grand exterior, reminiscent of an old New England mansion, designed with a Federal-style redbrick aesthetic. The imposing lobby, with its soaring ceilings, magnificent staircase, and arching palladium windows, aims to evoke a bygone era of grace and hospitality. The hotel is situated in a rural setting, offering a degree of tranquility. It boasts a beautiful exterior, especially noted during the Christmas season when it is often adorned with festive lights and decorations. However, despite this initial grand impression, recent customer feedback suggests that the interior common areas and rooms may appear "tired & drab" or "outdated," with some guests finding them to be in need of refreshment. Noise levels, particularly from other guests in common areas and hallways, have also been a point of concern for some visitors, impacting the overall peacefulness of the environment.
The Colonial Hotel offers a range of services typically found in a hotel of its size, including 112 guestrooms or units. These services are intended to cater to both leisure and business travelers. However, recent customer reviews indicate a significant discrepancy between advertised services and the actual guest experience, particularly concerning professionalism and ethical practices.
On the advertised side, the hotel provides:
Despite these offerings, recent customer feedback details severe issues with service. Complaints include a lack of room service despite it being advertised, and a highly unprofessional, sarcastic, and dismissive attitude from management when confronted with complaints. There are alarming allegations of mysterious extra fees with "fake excuses," unauthorized saving and use of credit card information leading to accounts being "completely drained," and theft of personal belongings from rooms. Furthermore, a highly distressing review describes discriminatory and humiliating treatment towards non-U.S. guests, alleging mockery and disrespect based on nationality. Another review highlights a policy of refusing credit for cancellations, even in cases of emergency, for loyal customers, leading to significant financial loss.
The Colonial Hotel's primary strength lies in its extensive event capabilities, particularly for weddings and larger social gatherings. Its ballroom and multiple event spaces make it a sought-after venue in the region for such occasions. The hotel also features:
However, the hotel's "features" are heavily overshadowed by the significant negative feedback regarding basic hotel operations, cleanliness, and staff conduct. Concerns about "filthy" rooms with "moldy smell," stained sheets, and dirty towels directly contradict the expectation of a functioning hotel.
Based on the provided information, while The Colonial Hotel may promote itself as an ideal venue for events and a convenient stay in Central Massachusetts, potential guests searching within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category should exercise extreme caution. Traditional promotional information, such as special packages or loyalty programs, would typically be offered by the hotel directly or through booking platforms. The hotel's website lists a "Holiday & Promotions" section, but specific active deals are not detailed in the provided information.
Instead of focusing on typical promotional offers, the overwhelming sentiment from recent customer reviews suggests a critical need for awareness regarding alleged issues with:
While some older or less detailed reviews might offer a more neutral or even positive perspective on aspects like the restaurant or general location, the most recent and detailed feedback presents a dire picture. Guests looking for accommodations in Gardner should carefully weigh these serious concerns against any perceived conveniences or features. It is strongly advised to conduct thorough research, consider alternative lodging options in the area, and prioritize detailed, recent reviews over general promotional materials to ensure personal safety, financial security, and a satisfactory stay.

May 15, 2025 · Luiza SilvaI am not surprised at the snarky response from management. Apparently, this is their idea of customer service. I have stayed at The Colonial on several occasions over the past 7 years because I have a lot of family in the area, not because it is a destination hotel. Recently, my sister-in-law passed away and I had just a couple of days notice before her funeral. I quickly booked a flight and hotel on Hotels.com, because I was continuing to travel up to Maine. Unfortunately, at 71, I suffer from chronic vertigo and was not able to make the trip at all. The Colonial REFUSED TO EVEN CREDIT ME FOR THE CANCELLATION. I do have to travel to see my family sometime soon and I planned to stay at The Colonial, but not now. They insisted on keeping $287, my 2-night booking. I have traveled in the past, quite a bit, and have never encountered this situation. In fact, The Colonial once in the past credited a stay that I had to cancel and put it to a future stay. That's what you do for loyal customers! I am no longer one..not sure if they have any. I will stay further away from Gardner, as I will never give these unprofessional small-time people another dime. Now, I will speak of the quality of the hotel. All the reviews about how tired & drab it is, how bad thefood is when they even serve anything is all true. The drab rooms and noise is all true! What they have going for them, is it's the only bearable hotel in the entire area. I expect they don't do well because they are fine with insulting customers as long as they get to keep your money. As for those rave reviews from Local Guides, pfffft! I would take those with a grain of salt.
May 19, 2025 · Anita LeGaultOur room was immaculate. The shower was fabulous. But the noise at night was a little bit too much. The door to our room had an inch space below it anyone walking by (we stayed near the pool) it was like having your door wide open. And the family that stayed above us wouldn't sit down and walked so heavy. We stayed there kid free and it felt like we had kids with us the entire time. Would I stay there again? Absolutely but please do something about soundproofing the doors.
Apr 13, 2025 · Tara SavageI have never written a review before but after returning to the Colonial for our second stay a couple of weekends ago I felt the need to. Upon arriving, the Colonial is gorgeous and the front desk staff (specifically Holly and Mike) were extremely friendly and helpful. My husband and I stayed for the first time with our son at the beginning of December for a local hockey tournament. The rooms are pretty average but clean and spacious. Rooms are priced a bit high but I will say for the pool, cleanliness, staff, and location it is worth it. There is a restaurant on-site and I have to mention the reason I decided to leave my first Google review ever. During our first stay we came in as a group of 12 and our group was chaotic with people coming in and out randomly. We had Beth as our server and she was perfect. Very patient, attentive, funny, and I don't believe she ever wrote a thing down but our orders were correct and prompt to arrive for the entire 5 hours we were there. We came in the next night with just one other couple and were happy to have her as our server again. She greeted us and before I could even start to say my usual drink order she asked each of us if we'd like what we had drank the evening before! She remembered each of our orders and was so helpful and accommodating and also provided great recommendations from the restaurant menu as well as breakfast spots in the area for when the hotel was not serving breakfast. Fast forward to two weeks ago and my husband and I had seen they had a ski package at the Colonial and we decided to take advantage. We visited the restaurant again and decided to sit at the bar and were delighted to have Beth as our bartender. We mentioned we had had her as a server the month prior and she immediately remembered us and our drink orders! Wow! Service and food was wonderful per usual. Honestly, all of the staff at the Colonial were absolutely amazing and we look forward to visiting Beth and friends again when we need a night away. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a reasonably priced but upscale getaway.
Jan 27, 2025 · Shelby MWhere do I begin?? The rudeness of the front desk staff? The rudeness of the wait staff? The inconsistent information? The attempts to collect as much money as possible from every guest? We were there for a wedding and had booked a block of 20 rooms. I’m sure the hotel appreciated the business. We asked if they would hand out our gift bags to those checking in. The employees said yes with the caveat that there was a charge of $5.00 per bag to hand out!! I didn’t ask them to fill the bags with goodies. Why the $5.00 charge? Never heard of such a thing!! Then my in-laws had an adjoining room yo ours so that they could watch the kids 1 &3 while we attended a wedding. When I went to check them in at 11:30, I was told it would be an additional $100.00 as it was before noon. There was no one in the room!! I stood there and waited until 12:01 then checked in to avoid the $100 fee. My daughter had rented a suite so that her hair and makeup could be done. This was on the second floor. Upon check in we found out the elevator was out of service. Ok that happens, but did anyone offer to assist the hair and makeup girls with their bags.?? I think you know the answer. Overall the hotel is tired looking and so are their employees. They get away with this as they are really the only game in town. There is a first and last time for everything and this was the last for us.
