I called 4 times in the two weeks leading to our stay in an attempt to upgrade our room, no one answered the phone so I figured it would be no problem once we arrived. When we’re checking in, I asked to upgrade and they said “sorry we literally just sold the last one. We’re all booked”. A disappointing start and it didn’t get better. The rooms are incredibly dated. There was a crumpled envelope right on the dresser signed by housekeeping “to make our tip convenient” , a bold move because the ants and sticky floor were hard to overlook. The whole resort is incredibly dated, service is mid and terrible food.

Devil's Head Resort Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For generations of Wisconsinites, Devil's Head Resort has been a cherished destination, synonymous with outdoor recreation and a classic resort experience. Nestled in the scenic landscape of Merrimac, Wisconsin, this resort hotel offers a unique blend of activities for every season. It's a place where families have created lasting memories on the ski slopes in the winter and where golfers have challenged themselves on beautiful, hilly courses in the warmer months. The resort's appeal lies in its long-standing tradition as a central hub for outdoor fun, making it a familiar and beloved spot for many local residents. While it may not have the brand-new, modern aesthetic of some newer establishments, its charm lies in its established character and focus on providing a wide range of recreational opportunities. Guests often come to Devil's Head with a specific purpose in mind—to ski, to golf, or simply to enjoy the natural beauty of the area—and the resort's offerings are tailored to meet these desires. It's a place that feels like a Wisconsin classic, providing a sense of comfort and nostalgia for those who have visited before and a welcoming introduction for newcomers.

The experiences at Devil's Head can vary, but a common theme is the focus on the activities themselves. As one customer review notes, "we were there to golf not hang around the room," which perfectly captures the spirit of the resort. Guests appreciate the opportunity to immerse themselves in the two beautiful and fun golf courses, Glacier and Prairie Glen, which are a major draw. The resort is accommodating, with staff who are willing to work with guests to make their stay happen, even on short notice. The rooms, while described by some as "slightly outdated," are generally considered to be clean and functional, providing essential amenities like a hot shower, mini fridge, and hair dryer. The price point is often a key factor, with guests finding it to be a great value, especially when the main purpose of the visit is to enjoy the resort's fantastic outdoor offerings. While there may be some challenges with certain aspects, such as dated decor or service issues, the overall experience for many is positive, leading to plans for a return visit. It’s the kind of place that resonates with a certain type of traveler—one who prioritizes the destination's activities over cutting-edge luxury, and who appreciates a place with history and character.

Location and Accessibility

Devil's Head Resort is situated at S6330 Bluff Rd, Merrimac, WI 53561, USA. This location is a significant part of the resort's appeal, as it places guests in a beautifully scenic part of Wisconsin. The resort is nestled in a natural landscape, offering stunning views and a sense of escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The Merrimac area is known for its rolling hills and picturesque bluffs, providing the perfect backdrop for both a relaxing getaway and an active vacation. The resort's address makes it a relatively easy drive from many of Wisconsin’s major cities, including Madison, Milwaukee, and even the greater Chicago area. This accessibility is crucial for locals looking for a convenient weekend trip without a long travel time. The route to the resort is generally straightforward, making it a stress-free journey for those unfamiliar with the area. The resort’s location at the base of the bluff means that guests are immediately immersed in the recreational environment they came to enjoy, whether it's stepping onto a golf course or preparing to hit the ski slopes.

The nearby Merrimac Ferry offers a unique and scenic way to cross the Wisconsin River, and the charming town of Baraboo, with its variety of shops and restaurants, is just a short drive away. This proximity to other points of interest means that guests are not confined to the resort itself, offering the flexibility to explore the wider region. The location is also an integral part of the resort’s identity as a premier destination for seasonal sports. The natural topography of the land provides the perfect conditions for both the golf courses and the ski hills, which are a direct result of the surrounding bluffs. For anyone in Wisconsin looking for a place that feels like a true getaway but is still easily reachable, the location of Devil's Head Resort offers the ideal balance. It is a destination that is both a retreat and a convenient home base for regional exploration.

Reservation were to go Saturday, golf Glacier, then stay over and golf Prairie Glen Sunday. Decided last minute to go up Friday, the staff was very accommodating, getting us into a room and letting us choose to stay there or move to the original room the next night. Rooms were clean, shower was hot, had mini fridge and hair dryer. It is slightly outdated compared to most places, but price was great, and we were there to golf not hang around the room. Both courses have beautiful views and were fun! Their watering system is down, the greens were pretty rough to say the least. All in all, it was a great weekend, and we plan to do it again.

Went for a girls weekend with the intention of laying out by the pool soaking up the sun. Pool was empty when we arrived, we were told it would be full and working by the next day. It was not. This is not an accessible facility. Which is a good thing to know before staying. We had to change rooms 2 times, 3rd room is a charm I guess. They do not have a fitness room as advertised. They have a ping pong table where the fitness room once was. They do have an indoor pool, 2 hot tubs and a sauna. The area was pretty dirty, we found hair and a used bandaid next to the hot tub. The maintenance men tried very hard to accommodate our tanning needs. The bartender, I believe his name was Boston, was excellent. He is a local and offered some great suggestions for places to visit. He was super friendly. Had an issue in the gift shop as well. No compensation was offered for this insanity. The grounds were nice. The room was inexpensive. The appetizers were decent. Breakfast buffet was fine. I do not believe we would go back.

Planning my daughter's Quinceañera celebration was such a joy because Holly at Devil's Head Resort was so knowledgeable and helpful. She made the whole venue planning process a breeze. I would be overwhelmed without her help. I am very grateful she was there to assist us. The day of the event, the venue was set up exactly how we wanted and our decorator was able to easily navigate through, the food we purchased was delicious, and the Quinceañera celebration was amazing. Our guests were extremely happy, and I was so happy my daughter had such a magical experience. Thanks to Holly and Devil's Head Resort staff, my daughter's Quinceañera was the dream event it was supposed to be. Thank you!

Recently spent Friday and Saturday skiing. We didn’t stay at the resort so I can’t speak to the rooms. The resort itself could use a lot of updating. We were mostly a group of beginners so spent most of our time on the bunny hill and green run. Not much real snow, but they did a good job making enough snow. A little icy which is to be expected, but really not bad conditions. The group lesson was good and $40 for 1.5 hours is reasonable. We enjoyed warming up in the Avalanche bar. Super limited and expensive food menu, but the pizza and alcoholic hot chocolate were good. Spent some time the last day with the ski patrol because of a little accident, and they were kind and helpful. We all had a great time. Only about a 3-hour drive from Chicago. Hopefully they update the resort soon, but still would recommend a visit.
