Environment and Location

Fat Sheep Farm & Cabins is nestled on 60 acres in Hartland (part of West Windsor), Vermont, offering a serene and picturesque setting. The farm itself is located on a quiet dirt road, ideal for leisurely strolls or bike rides amidst rolling hills and beautiful farmland, contributing to the tranquil and immersive environment.

Services and Amenities

Fat Sheep Farm & Cabins distinguishes itself through its unique blend of lodging and authentic farm experiences. The accommodations are not traditional hotel rooms but "spacious" and private cabins, typically designed with an "open floor plan" that allows families to bond comfortably. The cabins are described as "rustic yet elegant and comfortable," with "tasteful, functional, and mindful" details and accoutrements. Each of the five cabins is individually decorated and furnished, and includes:

  • Fully Equipped Kitchens: A significant convenience, allowing guests to prepare their own meals. Kitchens typically feature a full-sized refrigerator/freezer, stovetop, oven, microwave, coffee/tea maker, and essential cookware, dishware, and utensils. This enables guests to enjoy farm-fresh ingredients in their own space.
  • Comfortable Bedding: Cabins offer premium bedding, Egyptian cotton sheets, and down comforters, ensuring a restful night's sleep. Bedrooms may feature queen beds, with additional sleeping options like futons or sofa sleepers in living areas.
  • Private Bathrooms: Each cabin has a private bathroom with a shower/tub combination, complimentary toiletries, and hair dryers.
  • Modern Conveniences: All cabins are equipped with heat, air conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Other features include a desk, separate sitting and dining areas, a private porch with Adirondack chairs overlooking the fields, and in-room safes. Some cabins are soundproofed.
  • Farm-to-Table Experience: Guests are invited to enjoy "fresh seasonal produce" from the farm's fields and "pasture-raised eggs" from their chickens, often described as a transformative culinary experience ("farm eggs gave me a new lease on life").
  • Interactive Farm Activities: A core part of the experience is the opportunity for guests, especially children, to participate in "morning animal chores." This may include feeding the sheep, goats, and chickens, taking animals out to pasture, milking the sheep, and collecting fresh eggs.
  • Animal Interaction: Beyond chores, guests can visit and interact with the farm's adorable animals, including sheep, lambs, alpacas, goats, and playful farm dogs, which are "extremely friendly" and enjoy being petted.
  • Outdoor Spaces and Activities: The farm offers a variety of outdoor amenities including a shared fire pit (perfect for sunsets and roasting marshmallows), a natural playground (made from on-property rocks and trees, featuring a sand pit, caves, and seesaw), corn hole, and walking/snowshoeing trails through the forest. Sledding is also possible right outside the cabins in winter.
  • Guest Services: A 24-hour reception desk is available. Limited free parking is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and an electric car charging station is also on-site. The property is smoke-free.
  • Workshops: The farm offers workshops such as Sourdough Bread baking, and cheesemaking workshops are planned, providing unique learning opportunities.
  • Farm Stand: A small farm stand in the event barn sells the farm's own products (like cheese and produce) and other local Vermont goods.
  • Pet-Friendly Options: Select cabins are pet-friendly, allowing guests to bring their dogs (with an additional charge per pet, per night), and even offering horse stalls for those who wish to bring their horses. Pet kits (blanket, towel, bowls) are provided in pet-friendly cabins.

Features and Guest Experience

The overwhelming feedback from guests of Fat Sheep Farm & Cabins is exceptionally positive, often reaching "10 stars if I could" levels of satisfaction. The unique combination of comfortable, well-appointed cabins and an authentic, engaging farm experience sets it apart. Key features that contribute to this outstanding guest experience include:

  • Exceptional Cleanliness and Comfort: "Cleanliness is a priority" and "comfort and peace" are consistently highlighted. Cabins are described as "spotless" and "by far the cleanest place I've stayed." The "comfortable bed" and quiet top-floor rooms contribute to a restful stay.
  • Warm and Welcoming Hosts: Owners Todd and Suzy are frequently praised as "great hosts," "so welcoming," "very kind and friendly," and "superhosts." Their hands-on involvement and willingness to share their farm life genuinely enhance the guest experience.
  • Engaging Farm Immersion: The opportunity for children and adults to participate in morning chores is a major draw, creating memorable and educational experiences. The direct interaction with friendly farm animals is a consistent highlight.
  • Beautiful Scenery and Tranquility: The "glorious" views and "peace and quiet" are a major draw, making it an ideal retreat from city life. Guests appreciate the seclusion and natural beauty.
  • Thoughtful Amenities: The fully equipped kitchens, farm-fresh eggs, and other thoughtful details like provided coffee and tea enhance the self-catering experience.
  • Ideal for Families: The farm atmosphere, animal interactions, and spacious cabins make it a "perfect way to bond" for families.

While the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, the nature of the experience means it might not appeal to every type of traveler. Those looking for a traditional hotel with extensive on-site restaurant services or a vibrant nightlife might find the farm setting too quiet. However, for those seeking a tranquil, immersive, and memorable escape with a strong connection to nature and farm life, Fat Sheep Farm & Cabins consistently exceeds expectations.

We have stayed here 2 times and both times were magnificent. I have vacationed all over the upper northeast from Kennebunkport to Hyannisport to White Mountains to Stowe to Bar Harbor—and I can honestly say this was my family’s favorite vacation by far. The cabin atmosphere is rustic yet elegant and comfortable. The open floor plan provides the family a perfect way to bond without encroaching on space. Furthermore, the details and accoutrements of the cabins were tasteful, functional, and mindful. The farm eggs gave me a new lease on life. Ever since my first stay, I have been repulsed by store bought eggs. In addition, there are adorable lambs, alpacas, goats, and playful farm dogs. My children loved the 8am chores and, afterwards, they all decided they wanted to live on a farm lol. And the view, it is glorious. The best part of all. Cleanliness is a priority and so is comfort and peace. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. Lastly, by far, the best place in Vermont is: Woodstock, and Hartland is about 20 minutes away. A perfect vacation.

We were here for a week and had a great time. We got to meet the animals each morning. Suzy gave a very helpful, hands on session on sourdough baking. Even our dog enjoyed her time.

My husband and I had the best wedding weekend at Fat Sheep Farm! The scenery was stunning and the vibe was so cozy—perfect for gathering with our closest friends. Our ceremony was nearby and we loved waking up to horses right outside our cabins. We had delicious bakery goods waiting for us upon check in as well as fresh eggs. The whole place felt like a little slice of paradise! Todd and his family are awesome and so accommodating. Can’t recommend it enough for anyone looking for a charming spot to celebrate or get away for a weekend. We can’t wait to return!

Perfect place for a relaxing Vermont getaway, whether for a couple or a large group! My friends getting married in the area booked all of the cabins here for our friend group during our stay in Vermont, and we even had the rehearsal dinner on-site in a nearby barn. The cabins were roomy, and the farm was beautiful and quiet, and it was awesome waking up to the sight of the farm animals and fog in the mountains every morning. The owners themselves were lovely people who left us farm-fresh eggs, delicious scones, and treats for our dog, and even started a firepit for us and our friends to hang out around late into the night.
