The Fullerton Hotel, located in the heart of Chicago, is a place that serves a very specific purpose within the city's housing landscape. It is crucial for anyone searching for a place to stay to understand that this is not a conventional hotel for tourists or short-term visitors. Public records and the nature of the reviews indicate that this is a residential hotel, also known as a Single Room Occupancy (SRO) building. These types of establishments have a long history in Chicago, providing a form of low-cost, long-term housing for individuals. The reviews for the Fullerton Hotel, while vivid and concerning, paint a picture of an establishment that is facing significant challenges, from maintenance issues to pest control. One reviewer mentions a "roach and his family," while another states there are "more roaches than tenants," which are serious claims that highlight the difficult conditions. Another review notes a shower that didn't work and a front desk employee with an unhelpful attitude. This article is intended to provide a clear, factual overview of the Fullerton Hotel's reality, based on publicly available data, to help local Illinois users make an informed decision and to set the proper expectations about this specific type of lodging. It is essential to approach this information with the understanding that the services and conditions are not comparable to those of a traditional hotel.
The Fullerton Hotel is located at 3919 W Fullerton Ave #1, Chicago, IL 60647, USA. This address places it within the Logan Square community, a neighborhood known for its vibrant character, historic boulevards, and a dynamic mix of cultures. For Illinois residents, this area is a popular and well-known part of the city. The hotel's location offers excellent accessibility via public transportation. While not directly on an 'L' train line, it is well-served by numerous bus routes, and is in proximity to the Healy Metra Station. It is also a short drive from major expressways, making it accessible for those traveling by car. A review on a local forum describes the area as "perfectly safe" and having a "nice neighborhood" feel, while another notes that the Fullerton Hotel itself is "super shady." This highlights the importance of distinguishing the hotel from the broader neighborhood. The location on a major thoroughfare like Fullerton Avenue means that residents have easy access to a variety of local businesses, including grocery stores, restaurants, and shops. The combination of a residential setting with strong public transit connections is a key feature for the hotel's long-term residents, providing a practical base for living and working in Chicago.
The services offered at the Fullerton Hotel, as a residential SRO establishment, are fundamentally different from a standard hotel. The focus is on providing a room for rent, often on a weekly or monthly basis, rather than offering a full suite of traditional hospitality services. The reviews provide a stark look into the reality of these services. A non-functional shower and a front desk attendant who seems annoyed by complaints are direct indicators of the level of service one can expect. There are no mentions of amenities like room service, a business center, or a fitness facility, as these are not part of the SRO model. The primary "service" is the provision of a room itself, which is a crucial distinction. The price point is likely the main reason for a resident to choose this location, as SROs are designed to be a budget-friendly housing solution. However, this comes with the understanding that the quality of services and amenities will be minimal. The reviews suggest that even basic services, like maintenance and customer interaction, are a point of concern. This is an important consideration for anyone evaluating the Fullerton Hotel as a potential place to stay. The services reflect its purpose as a low-cost, long-term residential option rather than a place for a short-term, comfortable vacation.
Long-Term Housing: The primary service is providing rooms for long-term rental, typically on a weekly or monthly basis, serving a need for affordable housing.
Minimalist Accommodations: The hotel offers basic room accommodations without the added amenities of a traditional hotel, such as daily housekeeping or room service.
Front Desk: There is a front desk, but a review suggests that the staff's attitude may be unhelpful, which is an important consideration for potential residents.
Self-Contained Living: The accommodations are designed for independent, long-term living, with residents responsible for their own daily needs and upkeep.
Problematic Maintenance: Reviews mention issues with non-functional showers, which indicates potential maintenance and repair challenges within the property.
The features and highlights of the Fullerton Hotel are best understood in the context of its function as a residential hotel. From a positive perspective, the most notable feature is its affordability, which is a significant factor for individuals on a tight budget. Another feature is its location in the vibrant Logan Square area, which provides residents with easy access to a dynamic neighborhood and Chicago's extensive public transit system. However, the features that are most prominently highlighted in the reviews are negative. The presence of "roaches" and "Bed Bugs" is a major concern and a clear indicator of the hotel's condition. The "Drama Drama Drama" mentioned in a similar review from a different residential hotel suggests that a sense of instability or conflict can be a feature of this type of communal living environment. The hotel’s physical building itself is a four-story structure built in 1931, giving it a historical context, but also suggesting that it may require significant maintenance. The presence of a new boiler being installed, as mentioned in a commercial real estate listing, indicates that some level of investment is being made in the building's infrastructure. These features, both positive and negative, are all part of the reality of the Fullerton Hotel as a place to live, rather than a place to visit. The hotel’s character and environment are what they are, and it is important for local users to have a clear understanding of these before considering a stay.
Affordable Price Point: The hotel's low-cost nature is a key feature, making it accessible for those seeking budget-friendly housing.
Convenient Location: Its placement on Fullerton Avenue provides easy access to public transportation and a variety of neighborhood amenities.
Interior Corridor Access: The rooms have interior entrances, which can be a point of security and privacy for residents.
Building History: The hotel building was constructed in 1931, giving it a sense of history that is common in older Chicago neighborhoods.
Proximity to Transit: Being in close proximity to bus routes and Metra train service is a significant highlight for residents relying on public transit.

The Fullerton Hotel is suitable for Illinois locals, specifically those in the Chicago area, who are in a specific and often difficult situation: the need for affordable, long-term housing. This is not a destination for a vacation or a weekend getaway. It serves a demographic that may be facing financial hardship or has limited housing options. For a local user who understands the context of an SRO, the hotel provides a crucial, albeit basic, place to live. The location in a vibrant community with great public transit access is a significant benefit for its residents, connecting them to employment, services, and the broader city. While the negative reviews are severe and must be taken seriously, the hotel's function as a low-cost residential option fills a persistent need in Chicago's housing market. For those who are not in this specific situation, there are countless other options in Chicago that are more appropriate for a comfortable stay. However, for the segment of the local population that relies on this type of housing, the Fullerton Hotel is a reality and a relevant option. This article aims to provide a clear and honest perspective, allowing locals to determine if this place meets their unique needs and circumstances.

May 26, 2025 · Warren RoesnerThe shower didn't work and there are more roaches than tenants! It's not a place I would recommend even to an enemy. That's how disgusting the place was. And the front desk lady was acting as if I was annoying her with my complaints. She pretty much had the same attitude when I was checking in, now that I think about it. Just spare yourself the headache and don't go to this place.
May 16, 2024 · Erwin VillatoroDon't believe these phony reviews saying how wonderful the place is. In reality this place should have been condemned a long time ago. It's roach infested and has rats the size of cats throughout the building. Not to mention the overwhelming smell of mold and mildew. How the city of Chicago permits places like this to do business is totally beyond imagination. This place should be condemned and burned to the ground. It's a public health and safety hazard.
Sep 10, 2022 · Aubrey NicholsBedsheets had red stains, part of it was broken and had holes. The hallway smelled foul, molded. Everything is dirty and previous review said there are bed bugs. We ended up leaving, of course they don't offer refunds either
Jan 02, 2017 · Evan Ji (EYJ)I called to complain about a employee who was very rude and disgusting just for asking about pricing. When telling the manager about how the employee hung up and how I tried to call back MANY times and she/he deliberately did not answer, the managers response was that “ the lines are busy”. This is the worst customer service I’ve ever had to deal with over the phone. I also I asked if I can speak to the owner of the hotel and he said HE COULD NOT DO THAT. Yes I’m writing a second post only because of the second encounter with the manager. If the owner of the hotel reads this, YOU NEED NEW STAFF! They are not welcoming at all and obviously have no pride for their jobs. I shall take my business elsewhere and wish the best of luck to whoever decides to deal with a insensitive staff like this
