We had reserved a non-smoking king size room but when we got there we were told that there was no non smoking king size left so we opted to have the 2 queen instead, that was not a deal breaker for us, as long it was non smoking. This hotel came a great price but you get what you pay for, it wasn't the most luxury place to stay but it was clean and comfortable. The walls are thin so you able to hear the conversation in the next room.

Great Cedar Hotel at Foxwoods Introduce

The Great Cedar Hotel at Foxwoods is an integral part of the sprawling Foxwoods Resort Casino complex, offering guests direct access to a world of gaming, dining, shopping, and entertainment. Positioned at 350 Trolley Line Blvd, Mashantucket, CT 06338, USA, it is a prominent choice for those searching within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category who are seeking a dynamic and activity-rich stay. You can reach the hotel at (860) 369-9663, or via mobile phone at +1 860-369-9663.

Environment and Location:

The Great Cedar Hotel is centrally located within the Foxwoods Resort Casino, putting guests "right in the middle of all the action." This means immediate access to the Great Cedar Casino, which features a vast array of slot machines, table games, and the multi-sensory PLAY Arena. The hotel is connected to the convention center and surrounded by the diverse offerings of the larger Foxwoods property, including multiple restaurants, bars, retail outlets, and entertainment venues. While this proximity offers unparalleled convenience for casino-goers and those seeking vibrant nightlife, it's important to note that the environment can be bustling and lively. The hotel is part of a complex that does have designated smoking areas, and while non-smoking rooms are requested, recent customer feedback indicates that actual room allocation for non-smoking preferences cannot always be guaranteed due to a "first come first serve" policy, leading to potential issues with smoke odor for sensitive guests. The location itself is within the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation reservation, offering a unique cultural context. Nearby attractions beyond the casino include the Tanger Outlet Foxwoods, Lake of Isles golf course, Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, Mystic Seaport, and Mystic Aquarium, all within a reasonable driving distance.

Services and Amenities:

As part of a major resort casino, the Great Cedar Hotel provides an extensive range of services and amenities designed for a comprehensive guest experience. These include:

  • 24-Hour Front Desk: Multilingual staff are available around the clock to assist with check-in (from 5:00 PM), check-out (until 11:00 AM), express check-out, luggage storage, and securing valuables.
  • Dining: Guests have access to an astonishing array of dining options within the Foxwoods complex, with over 20 restaurants and 19 bars/lounges. These range from fine dining establishments like Cedars Steaks & Oysters and David Burke Prime to casual eateries like California Pizza Kitchen and a food court, ensuring choices for every palate and preference. Limited room service is also available during specific hours.
  • Connectivity: Complimentary Wi-Fi is provided in all guest rooms and public areas, allowing guests to stay connected. Laptop-friendly workspaces are also available in rooms.
  • Parking: The hotel offers free self-parking, including covered options, and complimentary valet parking. There are also electric car charging stations and free RV/bus/lorry parking on-site. Height restrictions may apply for on-site parking.
  • Recreation & Entertainment: Beyond the casino, guests can enjoy a wide variety of activities. The resort features a full-service spa (The Norwich Spa at Foxwoods, offering massages, facials, body treatments, and more), an indoor pool, a seasonal outdoor pool, a fitness center, and recreational options like bowling alleys (High Rollers Luxury Lanes & Sports Lounge), an adjacent 18-hole golf course, and a family-friendly arcade (Tree House Arcade). Other unique attractions include the HighFlyer Zipline, Monza World-Class Karting, and Topgolf Swing Suite. There's also a nightclub/DJ, theatre shows, and various gaming options such as bingo, sportsbook, poker, and slot machines.
  • Business & Events: The hotel is connected to a convention center, offering extensive meeting facilities and a ballroom, with approximately 753 square feet (70 square meters) of meeting space. A 24-hour business center is also available.
  • Shopping: An on-site shopping center and designer shops are available for retail therapy.
  • Other Conveniences: Amenities such as ATM/banking services, a gift shop/newsstand, hair salon, vending machines, and a water dispenser are on-site. The hotel is equipped with accessibility features like braille/raised signage, front entrance ramps, and wheelchair-accessible paths. A resort fee of USD 28.75 per accommodation, per night, is applied, which typically includes in-room bottled water, in-room coffee, and phone calls.

Features:

The Great Cedar Hotel boasts 317 well-appointed rooms and suites designed for comfort and convenience. Key features include:

  • Comfortable Bedding: Rooms come with pillow-top mattresses and premium bedding for a restful sleep. Hypo-allergenic bedding is also available.
  • In-Room Amenities: Each room is equipped with a 49-inch LCD TV with digital channels, a mini-fridge, coffee/tea maker, in-room safe, and an iron/ironing board. Complimentary bottled water is also provided. Bathrooms feature designer toiletries, shower/bathtub combinations, and hair dryers.
  • Connectivity: Free WiFi is available in all rooms, along with laptop-friendly workspaces and free local calls.
  • Variety of Room Types: Options include Deluxe King and Deluxe Queen rooms, and One Bedroom Suites. Connecting/adjoining rooms are available for families or groups upon request and subject to availability. Some suites may feature special amenities like wet bars, half baths, and oversized master bathrooms with a whirlpool bath and separate glass shower stall, along with amazing views of the Connecticut forest.
  • Climate Control: Rooms are equipped with air conditioning and heating for optimal comfort, along with blackout drapes/curtains.
  • Smoking Policy: While non-smoking rooms are offered, guests should be aware that the property as a whole does have designated smoking areas. As indicated by customer reviews, the hotel's policy on non-smoking room guarantees can be inconsistent, operating on a "first come first serve" basis, which may lead to issues with smoke odor for sensitive guests.
  • Direct Casino Access: A major feature is the direct internal access to the Great Cedar Casino, offering a wide array of gaming options without needing to leave the resort complex.

Breakfast Information:

While the Great Cedar Hotel is part of a resort with numerous dining options, it does not typically offer a complimentary breakfast that is included with every stay in the manner of a standard hotel. Guests have access to over 20 restaurants within the Foxwoods complex that serve breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. These include buffet options like the Festival Buffet (which offers a breakfast buffet with hot and cold options), as well as a la carte dining at various eateries like Junior's Restaurant and Bakery, or quick-service spots like Dunkin'. Guests should plan to purchase their breakfast from one of the many available dining establishments. For specific breakfast options and costs, it is advisable to check the Foxwoods Resort Casino dining directory or inquire directly with the hotel upon arrival.

Customer Feedback Highlights:

Customer reviews for the Great Cedar Hotel at Foxwoods present a mixed picture, often reflecting the balance between its value and its nature as a casino hotel. Positives frequently mentioned include:

  • Value for Money: Many guests find the hotel offers a "great price" for its location and the extensive amenities available within the larger Foxwoods Resort Casino. It is often described as a "clean and comfortable" place to stay, even if "not the most luxury."
  • Cleanliness and Comfort: Reviews frequently mention "clean" rooms and "comfortable" beds, with pillow-top mattresses contributing to a good night's sleep.
  • Location and Convenience: Its direct access to the casino, dining, shopping, and entertainment is consistently highlighted as a significant draw.

However, significant concerns have been raised by some guests:

  • Non-Smoking Room Policy Issues: A major point of contention is the hotel's handling of non-smoking room requests. Guests have reported booking non-smoking rooms months in advance only to be told upon arrival that none are available, with the explanation being "first come first serve." This can lead to significant discomfort, especially for those with health conditions like asthma, due to strong smoke odors in allocated rooms. The hotel's stance that "smoking vs. non-smoking is only just a preference and preferences could not be guaranteed" has been a source of frustration and negative experiences.
  • Noise Levels: "Thin walls" are a recurring complaint, meaning guests are "able to hear the conversation in the next room," which can impact sleep quality, especially given the lively casino environment.
  • Room Condition (Isolated Cases): While many rooms are clean, some guests have reported "atrocious" and "disgusting" room conditions, particularly related to pervasive smoke odor in rooms designated for non-smokers, leading to physical discomfort and the need to switch rooms.
  • Check-in and Reservation Issues: One review noted difficulty checking in when the reservation was not under the arriving spouse's name, with the hotel refusing to add the name over the phone, leading to delays and inconvenience.

These reviews suggest that while the Great Cedar Hotel can offer a satisfactory stay for those prioritizing budget and casino access, travelers sensitive to smoke or noise should manage their expectations and perhaps reconfirm their non-smoking room preference rigorously, and ensure all names on the reservation are accurate prior to arrival.

I travel frequently and this is probably one of the worst hotel experiences I've ever had. I booked a non-smoking room over six months ago. When my wife arrived at the hotel, they would not allow her to check in since the reservation was under my name. They also would not allow me to add her name to the reservation over the phone, so she needed to wait. When I arrived, they told me that all of the non-smoking rooms had been 'taken' by folks who had arrived before me. I asked how this made any sense since I reserved a non-smoking room many months ago. The hotel manager actually said "first come first serve" LOL Anyway, my daughter has asthma and I explained this would not work for us. The staff would not budge on their 'policy', stating that smoking vs. non-smoking is only just a preference and preferences could not be guaranteed. Again, LOL To explain the conditions of the room is more than the word limit of this review will allow. It was atrocious - completely disgusting and absolutely reeked. It was a complete nightmare and we all felt sick because of it. The next morning we asked if a non-smoking room had become available for our second and final night and staff allowed us to move. However, they made no attempt to address the situation of the prior night and only kept stating 'non-smoking is just a preference' and 'first come first serve'. I hope anyone who does not smoke and values their health thinks twice about staying at this hotel.

I probably should wait a couple of days when I'm not so mad. This complaint is not for Foxwoods we had a great time. I booked a room about 4 months ago and prepaid close to $400 for a room because it was a concert night. I arrived to check in at 4:15, check in was at 4. I was told there were no non smoking rooms available. I said I reserved a non smoking room months ago and that I have bad sinus issues and would be miserable. She said Its in the fine print that non smoking was not guaranteed then charged me another $25 resort fee. As soon as I got off the elevator the smell hit me, it was so bad my eyes watered. I woke up with a massive headache and a sore throat. I got up a couple times in the night to stick my nose through the tiny crack in the open window for some fresh air. I can't risk that again especially for $400!

My friend and I stayed at the cedar woods hotel for the night after seeing a show. My friend requested a non smoking room 3 months ago, and when we showed up, they said they only had smoking rooms available. We had no idea that we weren’t going to be guaranteed a non smoking room, otherwise we would’ve payed extra to make sure we were in a smoking room. It was disgusting.

While clear that this hotel is on the older side, the rooms were clean and comfortable. The elevators opening to the main shopping/dining corridor was a great bonus. We asked for one of the quieter rooms and were placed near the end of a corridor and were not bothered by late night revelers. I can't speak to the value of the room or hotel as our stay was comped. Assuming a similar deal, I would look forward to staying here again.
