In early April, I had scheduled a flight out of Appleton International Airport in order to visit relatives. The forecast for my 3-hour drive to the airport called for icy conditions, so I made a last minute reservation for a very reasonably-priced room at Howard Johnson's on N. Perkins Street the night before, as my trip budget did not include additional accommodations. Past experience told me not to expect much, as similar-priced motels tend to be short on amenities and cleanliness. However, I've always had fond memories of Howard Johnson's - once a staple of the early 1960s - and looked forward to the experience. I told the attendant that I would be arriving late; he said this was not a problem, since the office would be staffed until midnight. To my surprise, the motel was a beautiful building painted in contemporary colors, with elegant, comfortable furnishings and full amenities! The room had a coffee maker, microwave and small refrigerator. Continental breakfast including a waffle maker was also available in the morning. Other amenities included an iron and ironing board, a bathroom heater on a timer, and a hair dryer - all of which came in handy for the trip. The room was clean and quiet, the staff was helpful and friendly, and the motel was ideally situated a short drive to the airport in one direction and within 2 miles to museums, a shopping district and Lawrence University in the opposite direction. I am very grateful for my experience and would strongly consider Howard Johnson's or other Wyndham Hotels for future accommodations! -Rob K

May 15, 2025 · Rob KAvoid This Hotel – Unacceptable Conditions and Service I strongly urge fellow travelers not to stay at this hotel. From the moment we entered, we were greeted by an overwhelming odor of cigarette smoke, soggy carpets, and swarms of flies and gnats — all clear signs of poor cleanliness and neglect including very shabby curb appeal and landscaping. Despite paying $210 per night during the Oshkosh airshow, we received no breakfast, no fresh towels, no housekeeping, and essentially no service whatsoever. The front desk staff were often absent or intentionally avoiding guests, making it nearly impossible to get assistance. The breakfast area, if you can call it that, was appalling: expired milk creamers, filthy coffee pots, cheap low-quality food, and dangerously low refrigeration temperatures that would likely violate health codes. Management showed zero accountability or concern, instead shifting blame onto guests for choosing an “affordable” hotel — despite charging premium rates during a high-demand event. This was not just disappointing — it was unsanitary and unacceptable. If you value cleanliness, service, or even basic hospitality, I highly recommend you look elsewhere. Shame on this management and brand Howard Johnson for operating under such substandard conditions without remorse.

When our first employee arrived, the female Uber driver told her that she could stay at her house rather than this dump. The room smelled of urine, the door and window lock didn't work, fire alarm was damaged, blood stains on the comforter, and people fighting in the hallways. Homeless people all around the building, and what looked like a drugged up guy in the lobby. We quickly booked a different place and took her out of the room. They even tried to double charged us an extra $1600 and when confronted, they said to file a dispute. You've been warned (also, plenty of other reviews that share the same).

It's all run down, dirty with black mold in the showers dirty carpets, lower level window in our room would not lock and there was easy access into the room from the ground floor. Dog fights in the hotel and my wife nearly got bit by one of the dogs at this hotel.

So they were accommodating and we did have to wait for housekeeping to clean a first-floor room which I didn't mind the wait. The room great it smelled clean looked clean. The towels and bedding white no stains at all. Bed was soft and comfy. The Continental breakfast was a bit disappointing which is why they only got four stars. The breakfast was cereal, waffle or toast. The bread grossed me out because there was no tongues everyone had to put their hand in the bag of bread. There was no fruit or yogurt. And no hot option either. They did have a refrigerator and microwave in the room so next time if we have to come up to Appleton and the company puts us up here I know to pick up things from the store for breakfast not just drinks and snacks. Now with that being said the room was good, clean, and NO bugs and pet friendly. So we are not opposed to staying here again i will just plan breakfast better. Overall it was a good stay.
