This place is disgusting! The rooms stink! There was a ton of hair in my bed, there were stains in the sheets, there were food crumbs, popcorn, and piece of bugs under the mattress! There was hair in the bath tub! Boogers on the shower curtain! The towel to put in the floor when getting out of the shower was filthy! The towels to dry off with were tiny and had holes in them! I was so utterly disgusted that I slept in the cab of the work truck! My work booked the same hotel a second night and I slept in the truck again!

While the brand aims for consistency, individual locations can vary significantly in their upkeep and guest experience. This article will detail the Abingdon property's location and accessibility, the services typically offered by the brand, and most importantly, highlight the actual features and conditions reported by recent guests. This candid approach is vital to ensure you have a realistic understanding of what to expect, allowing you to determine if this hotel aligns with your travel needs and expectations for comfort and cleanliness.

Location and Accessibility

Abingdon itself is a historic town known for its cultural attractions and outdoor recreation. The hotel's location offers proximity to several key local points of interest. It is noted as being near the Virginia Creeper Trail Abingdon and the renowned Barter Theatre, both significant draws for visitors to the area. While a review states it's "8 miles from the Abingdon Vineyard & Winery," other sources indicate it's within a "5-minute drive" of the Virginia Creeper Trail and Barter Theatre, suggesting varying distances depending on the specific starting point or mode of travel. Additionally, it's about "25.7 mi (41.3 km) from Bristol Motor Speedway," making it a consideration for race attendees. Other local attractions like Fields-Penn House, Abingdon Farmers Market, and William King Museum are also relatively close by.

The hotel is situated in a commercial area, likely surrounded by other businesses and dining options. Reviews mention "various dining options, including Cracker Barrel, Harbor House Seafood & Steak and DaVincis Bar and Grill are within easy walking distance," adding a layer of convenience for guests. The provision of free self-parking, including for RVs/buses/trucks, further enhances its accessibility for those traveling by vehicle. The property is described as a "Modern low-rise" with 2 floors, built in 1974 and last renovated in 2017, suggesting a mature property structure. While there is no elevator mentioned, accessibility features for rooms and common areas are generally offered by the Red Roof Inn brand.

Features / Highlights

Based on the provided customer reviews, the "features" and "highlights" of Red Roof Inn Abingdon are overwhelmingly negative, pointing to significant issues that severely impact the guest experience rather than positive attributes. It is crucial to present these candidly as reported by actual guests:

  • Extreme Cleanliness Deficiencies: This is the most severe and consistently reported issue. Guests describe rooms as "disgusting," with "a ton of hair in my bed," "stains in the sheets," "food crumbs, popcorn, and piece of bugs under the mattress," "hair in the bathtub," "boogers on the shower curtain," and "filthy" floor towels. One review explicitly states a "dirt film over" the heater and a "food item left by my bed by the cleaners," indicating a profound lack of basic hygiene.
  • Poor Room Condition and Maintenance: Reviews highlight numerous issues with the physical state of the rooms and their amenities. These include "holes in the walls," "Iron burn into the carpet," a "busted inwards" light, "blankets had little holes in them" (potentially from cigarette burns in smoking rooms), and a "heater would only put out warm air for about a minute before switching back to cold air." These indicate severe neglect and lack of proper upkeep.
  • Subpar Towel Quality: Guests specifically noted that "the towels to dry off with were tiny and had holes in them," further adding to the negative impression of cleanliness and quality.
  • Pest Infestation: The mention of "piece of bugs under the mattress" indicates a potential pest problem, which is a major concern for any hotel guest.
  • Unprofessional Management Response: After reporting issues to corporate, a guest received an "irregular and unprofessional" reach-out from the owner, with their "integrity being challenged." This highlights a significant problem with management's approach to customer complaints.
  • Functional Issues Requiring Guest Intervention: The need for a guest to "get a portable heater from the office" after checking in late and being "awake for hours figuring it out" due to a faulty heater demonstrates a breakdown in fundamental room functionality and guest comfort.
  • Discomfort Leading to Alternative Sleeping Arrangements: The level of disgust was so profound for one guest that they "slept in the cab of the work truck" for two consecutive nights rather than stay in the provided room, highlighting the extreme unsuitability of the accommodation.

In summary, the most prominent "features" of Red Roof Inn Abingdon, based on customer feedback, are the reported severe deficiencies in cleanliness, maintenance, and the overall quality of the guest experience. There are no positive highlights from the provided customer reviews that outweigh these critical concerns.

Promotions or Special Offers

Given the deeply concerning and overwhelmingly negative nature of the provided customer reviews for Red Roof Inn Abingdon, it is critical to exercise extreme caution when considering any promotions or special offers. While Red Roof Inn, as a brand, frequently runs various deals, directly highlighting specific promotions for this particular location without strong caveats would be misleading given the severe issues reported by guests.

As a brand, Red Roof Inn typically offers:

  • RediRewards Program: A loyalty program that allows members to earn points for free nights and receive exclusive discounts.
  • Seasonal Promotions: Deals tied to specific seasons, holidays, or travel trends.
  • Discounts for AAA/AARP Members, Seniors, Government/Military: Standard discounts offered by many hotel chains.
  • Extended Stay Rates: Potential savings for booking multiple nights (e.g., weekly rates).
  • "Kids Stay Free" and "Pets Stay Free" Policies: Red Roof Inn generally allows children and one pet to stay free (with certain conditions for the second pet).

However, for North Carolina locals specifically considering Red Roof Inn Abingdon, it is paramount to prioritize the reported condition and service over any potential discount:

  • Exercise Extreme Caution: Based on the direct quotes from reviews ("disgusting," "filthy," "bugs," "stains," "heater wouldn't work," "slept in the cab of the work truck"), any perceived savings from a promotion at this location would likely be negated by a severely uncomfortable, unhygienic, and potentially frustrating experience.
  • Verify Current Conditions: If, despite the reviews, a traveler finds themselves needing to book at this specific location, it is absolutely essential to call the hotel directly at (276) 628-7131 and explicitly inquire about the current state of cleanliness and maintenance of the rooms, as well as the functionality of amenities like heating. Ask for recent photos if possible, or if there have been significant renovations or changes in management since the reported issues.
  • Consider Alternatives: It is strongly advised that Virginia locals explore other lodging options in Abingdon or nearby areas, even if they appear to be slightly higher in price. The cost of a few extra dollars per night is often a small price to pay for cleanliness, comfort, and safety, which are fundamental expectations for any hotel stay.
  • Read the Latest Reviews: Before making any booking decision, always consult the most recent reviews on multiple reputable travel booking websites. Guest experiences can change, but the issues reported here are systemic and severe.

While Red Roof Inn as a brand has promotions, the information provided for Red Roof Inn Abingdon strongly suggests that prioritizing a low price without thoroughly investigating current conditions could lead to a highly unsatisfactory stay for Virginia locals.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For Virginia locals considering a stay in Abingdon, it is critical to offer a very clear and direct assessment of the Red Roof Inn Abingdon based on the provided, highly concerning customer reviews. While every traveler's needs and budget are unique, the overwhelming consensus from recent guests suggests that this hotel, in its currently reported condition, would be unsuitable for most individuals or families seeking a standard, comfortable, clean, or safe hotel experience.

The reasons why this property is widely unsuitable for locals, as explicitly detailed by multiple recent guests, are severe:

  • Profound Cleanliness Issues: The recurring descriptions of "disgusting" rooms, "ton of hair in my bed," "stains in the sheets," "food crumbs, popcorn, and piece of bugs under the mattress," "hair in the bathtub," "boogers on the shower curtain," and "filthy" towels indicate a fundamental and unacceptable failure in basic hygiene and sanitation. No local traveler should have to endure such conditions.
  • Significant Maintenance Neglect: Reports of "holes in the walls," "Iron burn into the carpet," a "busted inwards" light, non-functional heating, and a "shower control knob felled out" point to a severe lack of property upkeep and investment. These are not minor issues but systemic problems impacting basic functionality and comfort.
  • Safety and Security Concerns: The mention of a "busted" bedroom lock is a critical safety issue. Travelers, including locals, rely on a secure room, and a compromised lock fundamentally undermines that expectation.
  • Unprofessional and Dismissive Management: The reported "irregular and unprofessional" response from the owner when issues were raised, including challenging a guest's integrity, demonstrates a concerning lack of professional customer service and accountability. Virginia locals expect and deserve respectful and effective handling of any concerns.
  • Compromised Comfort Leading to Extreme Measures: The fact that a guest "slept in the cab of the work truck" for two consecutive nights due to the room's condition speaks volumes about the absolute unsuitability of the accommodation for a restful stay.

While the Red Roof Inn Abingdon's location off I-81 and proximity to local attractions like the Virginia Creeper Trail might appear convenient, any such advantages are completely overshadowed by the severe and consistent negative feedback regarding the hotel's cleanliness, maintenance, and management. For North Carolina locals prioritizing a clean, safe, and comfortable lodging experience, even at a budget price point, the current state of Red Roof Inn Abingdon, as reported, would likely lead to significant disappointment and an unpleasant stay.

Therefore, it is strongly advised that Virginia locals seeking accommodations in the Abingdon area explore other hotels with consistently positive reviews that clearly demonstrate a commitment to basic standards of cleanliness, maintenance, and guest satisfaction, rather than risking a stay at this particular property.

[Update: 01/07/25] I contacted corporate management to report these issues, and the owner has reached out separately in an irregular and unprofessional manner. Adding a video I took of the unit before I left for further evidence since my integrity is being challenged. The room was pretty gross. The heater had a dirt film over it, one of the lights was busted inwards, and the blankets had little holes in it. I was in a smoking room, so people might have used the blanket to put out their cigarettes, but those blankets should not be used after something like that has happened. It was disgusting and uncomfortable. There was also a food item left by my bed by the cleaners which my dog immediately snatched up and ate. There should NOT be anything edible left in the rooms after cleaning. Finally, my heater would only put out warm air for about a minute before switching back to cold air. I was able to get a portable heater from the office, but this meant I was awake for hours figuring it out after checking in really late. I stay at Red Roof Inns while I travel with my dog. This is probably the 10th unique location I've stayed at, and it's definitely been the nastiest.

DO NOT BOOK! Booked through Orbitz, it shows a 7.2 rating on the site. The ONLY way this is possible is if the owner/manager and staff posted those reviews. It indicates this is handicap accessible, it is not. The room smelled of dirty mop water and there are grime stains in the toilet and bathtub. I requested a refund, and have been denied. Orbitz stated it was up to Red Roof, Red Roof stated it was up to Orbitz. So I feel a responsibility to warn anyone considering this particular hotel.

No stars. Had to add a star to publish. I would not recommend. I stayed on the 24th of March 2025. The hand towel was full of dirt. When I turned on the shower, the lever fell off. The bathroom light was dirty and had bugs. Bathroom lighting was poor. The table was wobbling. The luggage rack was very dusty. The bedspread had ink marks. The parking lot needs repairs.
