Booked the Asticou on the recommendation of a friend, noting that if you wanted the real Maine feel this was a perfect spot. Yes, it is a bit old, but given its age, it’s in amazing shape. Rooms are a bit small but clean and great beds. Also, this is an amazing location. Bar Harbor is great, but overrun. Northeast is amazing and I will stay there every time! Above all the service was amazing. The staff was super helpful and very nice. The bartender Kip was one of the best employees I have ever met. A perfect combination of friendly, funny, and helpful. He helped make it a wonderful vacation. Do whatever he recommends!

The Asticou Hotel Introduce

For travelers seeking "Hotels Near Of Me" in the exquisite region of Mount Desert Island, Maine, who appreciate historical charm, serene surroundings, and breathtaking views, The Asticou Hotel in Northeast Harbor presents a truly distinguished option. Located at 15 Peabody Dr, Northeast Harbor, ME 04662, USA, this esteemed establishment, originally built in 1883 and later rebuilt after a fire in 1899, offers a unique blend of turn-of-the-century elegance and modern comforts, making it a beloved choice for a memorable Maine vacation.

The environment of The Asticou Hotel is a key part of its allure. Nestled in the picturesque village of Northeast Harbor, it offers a "quiet stay" away from the more "overrun" and bustling areas like Bar Harbor, while still maintaining excellent proximity to all the region's attractions. The hotel is strategically positioned overlooking the beautiful Northeast Harbor inlet, which opens out to the Atlantic Ocean, providing guests with "unbelievable views" of the harbor. This serene setting, combined with beautifully landscaped gardens and easy access to the trails of Acadia National Park directly across the street, creates an idyllic backdrop for relaxation and exploration. The famous Asticou Azalea Garden is also just a short walk away, adding to the local charm and natural beauty. For those who desire the "real Maine feel," The Asticou, with its historic architecture and timeless ambiance, perfectly encapsulates the essence of a sophisticated coastal retreat.

The services at The Asticou Hotel are consistently praised by guests for their warmth and professionalism. The staff is repeatedly described as "amazing," "super helpful," "very nice," "friendly, kind, and attentive." Specific mentions of individuals like the bartender, Kip, highlight the personalized and engaging service that elevates the guest experience. This commitment to genuine hospitality ensures that visitors feel well-cared for and valued throughout their stay. The hotel maintains a 24-hour front desk to assist guests at any time, and provides complimentary Wi-Fi access throughout the property, which is essential for modern travelers planning their daily adventures.

A significant feature that adds tremendous value to a stay at The Asticou Hotel is the inclusion of breakfast. Guests consistently note that "Breakfast is included which was a huge plus," offering a convenient and satisfying start to the day. While the exact offerings can vary, the provision of a hot breakfast buffet is often mentioned, providing a variety of options to suit different tastes. The hotel also features an on-site restaurant, the Asticou Restaurant, which offers "American fare" and is known for its "classic setting for a coastal Maine dining experience" with "full-service bar." Guests have enjoyed evening dinners at the restaurant, often highlighting the "great food" and the opportunity to "loved having dinner outside overlooking the harbor," despite prices being "extremely expensive" (a common observation for tourist locations in the area). The restaurant is also famed for its "best homemade popovers on Mount Desert Island."

The accommodations at The Asticou Hotel are unique, blending historic character with essential modern comforts. As an older property, dating back over 140 years, it retains an "old feel" that many guests find charming and authentic to the Maine experience. While rooms in the main inn are sometimes described as "a bit small," they are consistently clean and feature "great beds." The hotel comprises 50 guest rooms, including 33 in the main inn and 17 in six adjacent buildings like Cranberry Lodge, Blue Spruce, Bird Bank, and three "Topsiders," offering a range of options from individually decorated guest rooms and suites to rooms with kitchenettes and screened-in porches in the adjacent lodges and cottages. While air conditioning may not be present in all rooms (box fans are often provided as is common for Maine), guests have lauded the "great water pressure" and "hot shower." Many rooms offer harbor or countryside views, and some include balconies, providing a private space to enjoy the surroundings.

Recreational facilities at The Asticou Hotel include an outdoor heated pool and a tennis court. While one reviewer mentioned that the "upkeep on the pool is lacking," with observations of "weeds all over the pool area," the pool itself is still considered "great and was so refreshing after a day of hiking." This feedback suggests that while the pool area may occasionally require more attention to its surroundings, the pool itself provides a valuable amenity for guests. The hotel also features a library and a lobby with a TV, offering comfortable spaces for guests to relax. For added convenience, laundry facilities are available, and the hotel offers a complimentary local shuttle service, particularly useful for getting around the Northeast Harbor area without needing to drive.

Promotional efforts for The Asticou Hotel would undoubtedly highlight its distinct historical character and its prime location in the quieter, yet equally beautiful, Northeast Harbor. Key selling points would include the "unbelievable views" of the harbor, the included hot breakfast, and the highly praised "amazing" and "attentive" staff. The hotel would appeal to those seeking a "real Maine feel" and a relaxed, refined escape. Its proximity to Acadia National Park and its slightly removed, peaceful setting from the crowds of Bar Harbor would be emphasized. The on-site dining, particularly the popovers and evening meals overlooking the harbor, would also be a significant draw. The availability of amenities like the outdoor pool, tennis court, and complimentary Wi-Fi and shuttle service would round out the offerings. Guests can contact The Asticou Hotel directly at (207) 276-3372 or +1 207-276-3372 for reservations and inquiries, positioning it as an ideal choice for anyone searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" that offers charm, comfort, and an authentic Maine experience.

I booked this place based on the location to Acadia National Park and also something that wasn’t over the top expensive since were road tripping with our two kids to multiple destinations. I honestly have no idea why some people gave it such bad reviews! I was contemplating between giving it 4 to 5 stars since I really only had one complaint. First off, the hotel is over 140 years old. With that said, it’s going to be old! There are going to be things that aren’t perfect, but I loved the old feel and it felt how I imagined being in Maine would be. We had a one bedroom suite and it was perfect size for our kids. There as no air conditioner it they did provide box fans. I’m assuming this is normal for Maine. The water pressure was great and the shower was hot! The view from the Inn is absolutely beautiful and overlooking the Harbor. Breakfast is included which was a huge plus for us and we did enjoy an evening dinner at the restaurant. No complaints and the food was great. The food was extremely expensive but traveling the east coast I was realizing these prices are normal for the area, and tourist location. I loved having dinner outside overlooking the harbor. My only real complaint is the pool area. The pool is great and was so refreshing after a day of hiking, it the upkeep on the pool is lacking. Around the pool needs power washed and weeds pulled. There were weeds all over the pool area. I saw the works cleaning and mopping the indoor Inn multiple times a day, but they need to focus on the pool area. Other than that the service was great. Everyone was friendly, kind and attentive. I also loved the it was on the Northeast side of the Harbor, close to Acadia NP and Bar Harbor, but still a few miles away from the Bar Harbor and set in a more quiet area of the area. We absolutely loved our first time in Maine!

Went to dinner here one night while staying on the island. It has a quaint country charm to it. All age groups from young to elderly were dining here. The lobster soup was not quite like a bisque but it was buttery and delicious. The crab cakes were crisp on the outside and also tasted great. Our waitress was very nice and the food came out in a timely manner. We didn’t stay here so I can’t comment on the rooms but the lobby was nice.

I truly don't understand the negative reviews for staying in the Inn. It's like 150 years old - if you're expecting all the modern amenities and for every nook and cranny to be perfect, I'm sure there's a nice Holiday Inn somewhere close by! That said, I loved staying here. It was beautiful, and I loved spending time in such a historic building. The room was clean and the staff was kind and helpful. Parking was easy, the views were great, and it was nice to be a little ways away from the activity in downtown Bar Harbor. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat!

My company Hager Photography was hired to shoot a wedding at The Asticou this fall and it was such an amazing experience! I didn't want to leave at the end of the night. I'm not exaggerating when I say that If I get booked there again I will try to get a room of my own and make a weekend out of it! I've shot at many venues in the Bar Harbor/Acadia area and this is probably my favorite. The venue is gorgeous, the grounds are scenic, and the staff is wonderful. I was particularly smitten with the design of the reception hall. Beautiful paintings everywhere. I was able to get some amazing portraits of the bride and groom in the botanical garden across the street. You simply can't go wrong with The Asticou for a wedding, event, or for your vacation lodgings.
