Surprisingly clean, safe and convenient for the price. Presence of a security guard on Saturday night was very reassuring. There’s no avoiding it- Hartford isn’t the safest place but I had no worries here. My biggest complaint is the TVs. There is no “guide” feature, I channel surfed for the first time in almost a decade. Otherwise, a great value and clean place.
For local users exploring the "Hotels Near Of Me" platform, The Capitol Hotel, Ascend Hotel Collection, presents itself as a value-driven option in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. Located at 440 Asylum St, Hartford, CT 06103, USA, this hotel, part of Choice Hotels' upscale Ascend Hotel Collection, aims to offer a unique and comfortable stay, often reflecting the local character. This detailed introduction will objectively cover its environment, services, features, and any available promotional information, drawing insights from general hotel information and, importantly, customer reviews, which provide crucial firsthand perspectives on the actual guest experience.
Environment and Location:
The Capitol Hotel, Ascend Hotel Collection, enjoys a highly central location on Asylum Street in downtown Hartford. This positioning places guests within immediate walking distance of many of the city's significant transportation hubs and attractions. According to a customer review, "The location is central to everything including Amtrak train station and a major bus terminal." This is a significant advantage for travelers relying on public transport, providing unparalleled convenience for arrivals and departures. Its downtown setting also means proximity to cultural venues, business offices, dining establishments, and entertainment options that define urban Hartford. However, the urban environment, particularly in downtown areas, often comes with its own set of challenges. One review candidly states, "There’s no avoiding it- Hartford isn’t the safest place." This acknowledgment of perceived safety concerns in the surrounding area is a critical piece of information for prospective guests. Despite this, the same reviewer also noted, "I had no worries here," specifically highlighting the "Presence of a security guard on Saturday night was very reassuring." This indicates that while the external environment might have safety concerns, the hotel actively implements measures to enhance guest security within its premises. The internal environment of the hotel aims for cleanliness, with one guest describing it as "surprisingly clean" and "clean place." However, another review noted that "The bathroom needed a deep cleaning," suggesting some inconsistency in the thoroughness of housekeeping. The hotel's central location can also lead to noise, as a guest reported that it "was noisy early in the morning," which is a common characteristic of busy urban areas. Overall, the environment offers high convenience but requires guests to be aware of the typical challenges of a downtown setting.
Services and Amenities:
The Capitol Hotel, Ascend Hotel Collection, provides a range of services and amenities designed to cater to both leisure and business travelers. While specific details on all amenities are not provided in the given reviews, typical Ascend Hotel Collection properties offer complimentary Wi-Fi, fitness centers, and sometimes on-site dining options or complimentary breakfast. The most highlighted service in the provided feedback is the staff's responsiveness to guest concerns regarding room condition. One guest mentioned that "the hotel staff offered me a different room" when a bathroom needed a deep cleaning, demonstrating a willingness to address issues, even though the guest declined the offer. This proactive approach to guest satisfaction is a positive service indicator. The presence of a "security guard on Saturday night" is a valuable service that directly enhances guest safety and peace of mind, especially given the perceived external environment. The hotel's phone numbers are (860) 455-4001 and mobile phone +1 860-455-4001, which are available for direct inquiries or reservations. These contact details are crucial for local users on the "Hotels Near Of Me" platform to gather more specific information about amenities or to make bookings. While specific dining services are not detailed, the central location ensures that numerous external dining options are readily available within walking distance. The overall level of cleanliness and service, as indicated by reviews, can be a mixed bag, with some aspects being highly praised for value and others needing attention.
Features:
The Capitol Hotel, Ascend Hotel Collection, offers several key features that contribute to its appeal as a downtown Hartford accommodation. A prominent feature is its "great value" and affordability for the price, especially given its central location. This makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers seeking convenience without breaking the bank. The comfort of the beds is a positive feature, with one guest stating, "The bed was comfy." The general cleanliness of the rooms is also noted, with guests finding them "clean" and "surprisingly clean," which is a crucial aspect of any hotel stay. However, inconsistencies exist, as one review noted a bathroom needing "a deep cleaning." The design and functionality of the in-room entertainment system appear to be a point of frustration, with one guest lamenting that "There is no 'guide' feature" on the TVs, forcing them to "channel surfed for the first time in almost a decade." This indicates a dated or less user-friendly TV system. The presence of security personnel, particularly on weekend nights, is a significant feature aimed at enhancing guest safety and reassurance in an area that guests perceive as potentially unsafe. The hotel's proximity to transportation hubs like the Amtrak train station and bus terminal is a defining logistical feature, offering unparalleled connectivity for travelers. The overall atmosphere, as described, suggests a practical and functional hotel that prioritizes basic comfort and security over extensive luxury or modern technological amenities. The noise level from the central location, particularly in the morning, is another implicit feature that guests should be prepared for.
Promotional Information and Considerations:
As part of the Ascend Hotel Collection by Choice Hotels, The Capitol Hotel likely participates in the Choice Privileges loyalty program, allowing guests to earn points and enjoy member benefits. The hotel may offer various promotions, such as discounted rates for advance bookings, extended stays, or seasonal specials. Local users searching on "Hotels Near Of Me" are advised to contact the hotel directly at (860) 455-4001 or +1 860-455-4001, or to visit the official Choice Hotels website, to inquire about current promotions and specific rates for their desired stay. When considering this hotel, potential guests should carefully weigh the balance of its excellent downtown location and good value against the noted concerns. The perceived safety of the surrounding area, despite the hotel's security measures, is a significant point of consideration, especially for those unfamiliar with downtown Hartford. While the cleanliness of rooms is generally praised, the specific mention of a bathroom needing deep cleaning suggests an occasional lapse in housekeeping thoroughness. Guests who value modern in-room entertainment features might be disappointed by the TV system. The potential for early morning noise due to its central location is also a factor for light sleepers. However, for travelers prioritizing a convenient downtown location, affordability, and the reassurance of on-site security, The Capitol Hotel, Ascend Hotel Collection, offers a viable and often surprisingly satisfactory option. Its strong points in location and value for money make it a competitive choice for the target audience of the 'Hotels Near Of Me' platform.

May 11, 2025 · Dan PensakThe bed was comfy. The bathroom needed a deep cleaning. Overall my experience was okay. In all fairness, the hotel staff offered me a different room and I declined. The location is central to everything including Amtrak train station and a major bus terminal. Unfortunately, it was noisy early in the morning.
May 10, 2025 · tanji donaldI have stayed here twice in the past two years. The first time, I had a room that faced the front, which was quieter than the room that I had this past time, which faced the back. The front faces the park, and is quiet. The back faces the train station, so it is noisy to hear trains all throughout the night. Hartford has a lot of homeless people, and they all seem to know that the hotel has no security, and offers free coffee in the lobby, and has an open area on the second floor where they have bathrooms and serve the breakfast. I watched many homelesses come to eat the breakfast, or they constantly go up to the second floor throughout the day to use the bathroom. I also saw them make themselves coffee from the machine in the lobby. When I came two years ago, there were refreshments in the lobby all the time. But now it is just a coffee machine. I assume this is because the homeless were eating all of those refreshments, so the hotel management put an end to that. Also, two years ago, I was able to store my luggage before/after check out, without a fee. Now, they want you to sign up for an app called Bounce, where you pay by the hour to leave your bags. Except, the room where they store your bags is not secure at all. The staff don't even give you a ticket (so someone else can easily just take your bag), nor is the room locked. With how many times we saw the receptionist leave the desk unattended, any of the homeless people could have walked behind the desk, and walked off with someone's personal items. I would not recommend, and I will be looking for different accommodation next year.
Apr 29, 2025 · M LynneI was pleasantly surprised. Cute, clean no frills hotel. The toilet was a bit wonky, television was outdated. Beds were comfy, great location and we had a wonderful view of the park. We chose this location because our regular hotel was booked. Good for the price. I would stay again.
Mar 31, 2025 · Shameka StephensWe stayed here the weekend of the Katt Williams show and I really enjoyed it. Clean rooms, nice view and the front desk staff were great. In walking distance to the XL Center, the train station and most of downtown. My only issue is that the plumbing/toilet sucked lol. I would definitely stay here again tho
