This hotel has a lot of potential, but how can you charge this much for a room with no window at all? We literally had a wall with a view of the inner lobby, no view of the outside or natural lighting at all. Also, the room was dusty, and there was a pair of someone else’s socks under the bed. Will definitely not be coming back.

The Goodwin Hotel Introduce

For individuals and travelers exploring "Hotels Near Of Me" options in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, The Goodwin Hotel, located at 1 Haynes St, Hartford, CT 06103, USA, might appear as a choice. The hotel can be reached via phone at (860) 246-1881 or mobile at +1 860-246-1881. This introduction aims to provide an objective assessment of the hotel, incorporating its positioning as a boutique establishment and critically examining the detailed feedback provided by recent guests, which highlights significant areas of concern.

The "Hotels Near Of Me" category is typically sought by users looking for convenient, local accommodation. The Goodwin Hotel's address places it squarely in the heart of downtown Hartford, suggesting immediate access to business districts, cultural attractions, dining, and entertainment venues. Its designation as a "boutique" hotel generally implies a focus on unique design, personalized service, and a more intimate atmosphere compared to larger chain hotels.

Environment: Historic Charm with Significant Room Discrepancies

The Goodwin Hotel is known for its historic and architectural significance, often showcasing a blend of classic charm with modern updates. As a "boutique" hotel, its common areas might be designed with distinctive decor, aiming for an upscale and unique ambiance. The lobby and public spaces are typically maintained to reflect this boutique identity. Its downtown location means guests are within a vibrant urban environment, with easy access to city life.

However, the provided customer reviews reveal significant inconsistencies and issues regarding the actual room environment. A major point of contention is the presence of rooms "with no window at all," offering only "a wall with a view of the inner lobby, no view of the outside or natural lighting." This is a critical environmental detail that can profoundly impact a guest's comfort and experience, especially when combined with a high price point. Furthermore, cleanliness issues were reported, with a room described as "dusty" and having "someone else’s socks under the bed," indicating potential lapses in housekeeping standards.

Another review highlights severe environmental control problems. A room intended to have a king-size bed was given a queen, and the room temperature was "almost 90 degrees," with a non-functional thermostat. The attempt to "fix" this involved opening a "literal skylight," which resulted in "SNOWING ON ME" when it was cold outside. This points to fundamental flaws in climate control and room maintenance, creating an extremely uncomfortable and inconvenient situation for guests. Additionally, noise pollution was a major issue, with "paper thin" walls leading to complaints about "one neighbor snoring and woke up to the other neighbors 'celebrating' at 6 AM." The presence of a "very sheer curtain" providing no privacy or light blockage from "lights" outside further compounds the environmental discomfort, leading to a "extremely bright in the room all night." These issues collectively paint a picture of an environment that, despite its potential or 'boutique vibes,' fails to provide basic comfort, privacy, and functional living conditions in many instances.

Services: Mixed Performance with Crucial Shortcomings

In the "Hotels Near Of Me" category, especially for a boutique hotel, guests expect personalized and efficient services. While no direct compliments were given to the front desk staff for positive service in the provided reviews, a 20% discount was offered as compensation for significant issues, indicating an attempt at service recovery. This suggests that the hotel does engage in some form of complaint resolution, even if the underlying problems are substantial.

Standard hotel services would typically include front desk operations, housekeeping, and possibly concierge assistance. However, the reviews highlight failures in delivering basic service promises. Providing a queen bed instead of a paid-for king bed is a clear service discrepancy. The inability to effectively resolve a critical issue like room temperature, resorting to an inconvenient and bizarre solution like opening a skylight that allowed snow to enter, indicates a severe lapse in maintenance and guest support services. The lack of proactive problem-solving, requiring the guest to "parkour to the ceiling and close the shade part of the skylight," demonstrates a failure in providing immediate and effective assistance.

Furthermore, the reviews explicitly state that "parking was not included and was $40 a night for valet," and "there is also no breakfast included." These are significant additional costs and omissions of services that are often standard or expected in hotels, especially those charging a premium. This lack of included amenities, coupled with high prices for parking and the absence of complimentary breakfast, negatively impacts the perceived value of the services offered.

Features: Overpriced Amenities and Functional Deficiencies

The Goodwin Hotel, aiming for a "boutique" identity, would typically feature unique room designs and potentially upscale amenities. However, the customer reviews bring to light significant deficiencies and features that are not commensurate with the perceived price point. The most critical feature issue is the existence of "no window at all" rooms, which fundamentally impacts the guest experience by eliminating natural light and an outside view. This is a highly unusual and undesirable feature for many travelers, particularly at a high price point.

The condition of the rooms, including "dusty" surfaces and "someone else’s socks under the bed," points to a lack of attention to cleanliness, which is a basic feature guests expect. Functional issues like a non-working thermostat, a skylight that allows snow into the room, and ineffective sheer curtains that fail to block light or provide privacy are severe flaws in the room's design and maintenance. The "paper thin walls" are a significant negative feature, directly contributing to noise disturbance and a lack of restful sleep, fundamentally undermining the purpose of a hotel room.

Additional features like the on-site valet parking come with a steep "€40 a night" fee, and the absence of complimentary breakfast further detracts from the value proposition. While the hotel's downtown location is a positive feature, its immediate benefits are significantly overshadowed by the described in-room and service deficiencies. The "boutique vibes" mentioned in the review appear to be a superficial aspect that does not translate into a genuinely comfortable or high-quality stay, particularly when considering the numerous functional and comfort-related failures.

Promotional Information: Balancing Aspirations with Reality

For "Hotels Near Of Me" searches, The Goodwin Hotel would likely promote its downtown Hartford location, its "boutique" status, and potentially its unique architectural aspects. Promotions might highlight special packages for romantic getaways, business travel, or cultural excursions, capitalizing on its proximity to city attractions. Its historical background and unique design elements might be used to attract guests seeking a distinctive experience.

However, based on the customer reviews, any promotional information needs to be viewed with a critical eye, especially regarding promises of comfort and value. While the hotel might advertise its unique charm or central location, the reality of "no window" rooms, cleanliness issues, severe temperature control problems, noise disturbances, and significant additional costs for parking and breakfast could lead to considerable guest dissatisfaction. The explicit advice from a recent guest to "highly recommend finding another hotel in the area if you need to stay downtown" serves as a powerful counterpoint to any positive promotional messaging.

Therefore, potential guests seeking "Hotels Near Of Me" in Hartford, who encounter promotions for The Goodwin Hotel, should be aware of the detailed negative experiences shared by recent customers. It suggests that while the hotel may present itself as a premium or boutique option, the actual experience for many guests may not align with such expectations, particularly concerning basic comfort, amenities, and overall value for the price charged. The hotel's ability to recover from these documented issues and genuinely deliver on its potential will be key to improving its reputation and customer satisfaction.

We had quite a few issues while staying at this hotel. First of all, we paid for a king size bed and they gave us a queen, but when my husband checked in he didn't even notice that because the room was literally almost 90 degrees and the thermostat wouldn't change - so he went and complained to the front desk. When we came back late that night after a wedding, they supposedly had "fixed it" but we are pretty sure that just means they opened up the literal skylight in our room. Which we realized because ten minutes after I laid down it STARTED SNOWING ON ME. At this point it was 1230 and we were exhausted so I didn't want to call and complain and switch rooms. So my husband had to like parkour to the ceiling and close the shade part of the skylight which seemed to at least stop the snow from falling on to the bed. When we complained about all of these things in the morning, they gave me 20 percent off which is the only reason I am giving two stars instead of one. Additionally there is a window that looks right out to lights and there's only a very sheer curtain that didn't really serve any purpose besides decorative - so it was extremely bright in the room all night AND the walls are paper thin so I fell asleep to one neighbor snoring and woke up to the other neighbors "celebrating" at 6AM. On top of all of this, parking was not included and was $40 a night for valet, and there is also no breakfast included. Even without all the additional issues, we did not find the hotel to be worth the price by any means. Despite the "boutique" vibes, I would highly recommend finding another hotel in the area if you need to stay downtown.

I briefly stayed at this hotel with a few of my friends for an 3 day event. Not only was the commute to the venue and back was less than 10 minutes, but it was in an area that was super easy to navigate! The OUTSTANDING service that was provided to us and our big group was above excellence. They accommodated all of us so well! A special shoutout to the AMAZING front officer manager Sarah, Katie and to the rest of the lovely staff at the Goodwin! Another special shoutout to the wonderful rockstar that is Moriah who is the bar manager! You and Sarah went above and beyond and made sure our clients were protected since we had special VIPS with us. Thank you to the amazing bartenders and serves who catered to our private events every night during our stay. The drinks were great and so were the Greek olives!! The best I've ever had. I highly recommend this hotel if you are ever in the Hartford area. This was the best experience I've had in years, I can't wait to see you all next year! :

Ok. So after reading all the other reviews I was concerned. But now I'm just concerned for the future. This hotel is awesome. A very nice hotel, valet, comfy large rooms, overly clean, good condition. Yes the walls/ceilings are on the thin side. It's an Old building. You don't hear talking but if someone is rolling their suitcase you can hear it. And it was literally in the middle of everything I needed to do, and there is so much around to eat and do. Would stay again

Clean but overpriced for the value. Gym equipment not well maintained: 3 of the 6 pieces had out-of-order signs and 1 of the 3 remaining treadmills didn't maintain elevation. A/C & Heating blower also directly blows on the head of the bed - not great when cold air is blowing on you all night.
