The Dunes on the Waterfront Introduce

For those discerning travelers searching for a unique and idyllic escape within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category in coastal Maine, The Dunes on the Waterfront in Ogunquit offers an experience that is consistently described as nothing short of "magical." Located at 518 Main St, Ogunquit, ME 03907, USA, this resort hotel transcends the typical lodging experience, providing a serene cottage colony setting directly on the Ogunquit River, with breathtaking views of the ocean and easy access to the pristine beach.

The Dunes on the Waterfront is a destination in itself, appealing to individuals, couples seeking a romantic getaway, and families looking for a memorable coastal vacation. It beautifully blends historic charm with elevated luxury, ensuring a comfortable and enriching stay through its unique environment, attentive services, distinctive features, and thoughtful touches.

Environment and Location:

The environment at The Dunes on the Waterfront is its most captivating asset. Spread across 12 acres of waterfront lawns, the property is nestled along the tidal Ogunquit River, offering panoramic views of the river and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. This unique setting provides a sense of seclusion and peace, making it a "peaceful, beautiful, and a lovely place to unwind," as echoed by guest reviews. The whitewashed cottages, scattered amidst oaks, pines, and colorful gardens, evoke a nostalgic, dreamy feel of summers past, blending quintessential Maine charm with contemporary elegance.

Despite its tranquil ambiance, the location is "perfect" for exploring Ogunquit. The resort is just a short distance from downtown Ogunquit (approximately 0.75 miles from downtown and Perkins Cove), allowing guests to walk to fine shops, renowned restaurants, and cultural attractions like the Ogunquit Playhouse. A significant advantage of its riverside location is the direct, easy access to Ogunquit Beach, especially at low tide, when guests can simply walk across the tidal river to a much quieter, less crowded section of the beach. For higher tides, the resort offers a charming pontoon boat service that ferries guests across the river to the beach, enhancing the magical experience. Complimentary golf cart rides on the property also make getting around effortless. The presence of dunes separating the river from the beach further adds to the natural beauty and gives the resort its apt name.

Services and Amenities:

The Dunes on the Waterfront prides itself on offering a range of services and amenities that enhance the guest experience, going beyond standard hotel offerings to create a true resort atmosphere. A cherished morning ritual for guests is the complimentary delivery of hot coffee, fresh baked goods, and the newspaper right to their cottage door, allowing for a relaxed start to the day.

The accommodations, primarily comprised of charming individual cottages (one, two, and three-bedroom options), are bright, airy, and exquisitely redesigned. Many feature screened-in porches or private outdoor spaces with Adirondack chairs, perfect for sipping coffee or watching the sunrise over the dunes. Interiors are a tasteful mix of modern cottagecore and classic seaside style, often including gas-burning fireplaces for cozy evenings, smart televisions, wet bars, and premium Cuddledown bedding. Some cottages, particularly larger ones, come with full kitchens or kitchenettes equipped with farmhouse sinks, soapstone countertops, and all essentials for meal preparation, offering significant flexibility for extended stays or families.

For water enthusiasts, The Dunes offers an impressive array of complimentary activities. Guests have access to a pontoon boat for scenic rides on the Ogunquit River, as well as kayaks and paddle boards to venture out onto the water. There's also a heated outdoor pool with views of the Atlantic Ocean, described as comfortable even on cooler days, providing a refreshing option for swimming. A dock is available for fishing or launching watercraft. Beyond the water, guests can enjoy complimentary beach cruiser bikes with woven baskets for exploring town or nearby bike paths, classic lawn games, and nightly bonfires by the beach with individual s'mores packages, creating memorable evenings. The resort also offers a playground area, library, and concierge services, making it suitable for families and individuals alike. Beach bags, chairs, and umbrellas are provided for guest use. Free Wi-Fi and ample free self-parking are also available. While a formal full-service restaurant is not on-site for all meals, Rose Cove restaurant is associated with the property and provides dining options, including an idyllic sidewalk café setting.

Features and Distinctive Qualities:

Several distinctive qualities make The Dunes on the Waterfront a standout choice in the "Hotels Near Of Me" category. The resort's historical significance, having originated as a cottage colony in 1935, is palpable, and its recent acquisition and multi-million dollar renovation by a luxury hotelier have elevated it while retaining its nostalgic charm. The focus on individual cottages, spaced comfortably apart across 12 acres, ensures privacy and a sense of intimate community, distinguishing it from larger, more crowded resorts.

The "phenomenal" and "exceptionally accommodating" staff consistently receives high praise for their friendliness, helpfulness, and genuine warmth. This personalized service, from welcome treats to assistance with activities, greatly enhances the guest experience. The unique tidal river location and the various ways to access the beach (walking at low tide, pontoon boat at high tide) are unparalleled features that offer a truly immersive coastal experience. The provision of diverse complimentary activities like kayaking, paddle boarding, biking, and s'mores bonfires adds immense value and ensures there's always something enjoyable to do on the property.

The design and decor of the cottages, with their "bright and breezy living space," "coastal hues," and "exquisitely redesigned" interiors, create a consistently appealing aesthetic that guests rave about. While some older reviews might mention small room sizes, the recent renovations have focused on creating spacious and functional living areas, including kitchens in many units. It's important to note that, typically, pets are not allowed at The Dunes on the Waterfront, with the exception of service animals.

Promotional Information and Value:

While specific promotional offers can be seasonal, The Dunes on the Waterfront frequently presents packages such as "Plan Now & Save!" for early bookings, and "Savor & Save" deals during the fall and spring seasons, which often provide discounted rates or added perks for off-peak travel. Interested guests should visit the official website or contact the resort directly at (207) 646-2612 or +1 207-646-2612 to inquire about current promotions and availability.

Despite being positioned as a luxury destination with rates reflecting its unique offerings, the value at The Dunes on the Waterfront is evident in the comprehensive experience it provides. The combination of its unparalleled beachfront location, the charm and amenities of the individual cottages, the wide array of complimentary activities (including water sports and daily treats), and the exceptional, personalized service from the staff, makes it a highly sought-after and worthwhile investment for a memorable Ogunquit getaway. The consistently glowing reviews and high ratings for location, cleanliness, and overall experience underscore its status as a premier resort hotel within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category for those desiring a truly enchanting stay in Maine.

This was our first time to this area and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We were blessed with some very nice October days. My wife and out two little boys (2.5 and almost 4) thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The Staff were welcoming, exceptionally accommodating, and friendly. The location was impressive with views that are exactly what we pictured for our Coastal Main trip. There were ample amenities, with the water dipping into the upper 50s, water amenities for us were limited to a pontoon ride (which was a lot of fun for the boys) as well as the heated pool which was comfortable on an early fall afternoon.

Staying here in the fall was wonderful. My husband and I wanted a change of scenery for the long weekend, and The Dunes felt like a home away from home. Even though it was rainy and cold for most of the weekend, we were so cozy in our cottage. It’s very easy to walk or bike to the downtown area, but they also have a car or golf cart if needed. They kept the heated pool open for true New Englanders that couldn’t care less about the cold - so my husband got to swim outside in mid-October! The best part, in my opinion, is the daily coffee, pastries, newsletter, and newspapers they bring to your door in the morning. It really got my day started right. Tons of activities to enjoy on the water, like kayaking and a floating cabana. My only complaint is that the living room and kitchen area felt awfully cold, even when we cranked the heat up. But the bathroom and bedrooms got very toasty. It would also be nice to have a TV in one of the bedrooms, but that’s mostly because we were chilly in the living room and wanted to be able to lounge somewhere warmer. Overall it was an amazing and relaxing experience. Much needed!

My family and I (two adults and two kids) just got back from an extraordinary vacation at the Dunes! The cottage was the cutest home away from home with so many amenities (screened in porch, fireplace, tv, mini kitchen). The staff are all so friendly and go above and beyond to provide exceptional service. We all had a great time with lawn games, snores by the fire pit, paddle boarding, kayaking and the pontoon boat! Even the little touches like the coffee and baked goods in the morning made it one of the best vacations we have ever been on. If you can’t tell, I highly recommend!!

I’ve stayed here several times. Loved the location and while the beds were rough the cabins were perfect. Was looking to stay again this year but at 850 a night will pass. Not sure if the new owners have caused this but the prices here have gotten ridiculous. Will stay at a different place in town. Sad, but just can’t justify it.
