I've stayed at the Monkey for years. The owners are very friendly and usually book your room themselves. I've stayed in all of the houses, and the rooms have been clean and comfortable. There is a little bit of a mothball smell though, which I don't mind. Sometimes if you pay cash, the rooms are even cheaper. You cannot beat the location or the price.
For travelers seeking a stay in the charming coastal town of Ogunquit, Maine, the Yellow Monkey Guest Houses offer a distinctive lodging experience, often appearing in searches for "Hotels Near Of Me." For inquiries, you can reach them at (207) 646-9056 or via mobile at +1 207-646-9056.
The Yellow Monkey Guest Houses have historically been praised for their excellent location in Ogunquit. Situated on Main Street, it's typically described as being "very convenient to nightclubs, restaurants and the beach," allowing guests to explore the town's offerings on foot. Ogunquit Beach and the scenic Marginal Way are generally considered to be within easy walking distance. The location also provides good access to the Ogunquit Playhouse and various shops and eateries that characterize the vibrant Main Street. This central positioning has long been a significant draw for guests, offering a balance of accessibility to attractions and a sense of being part of the local Ogunquit scene.
However, it is crucial to note that there have been significant changes to the property. Recent reviews indicate that "the front buildings were sold" and the property is "now only on the Hillside." This means that the experience might differ from what long-time guests remember, and the overall footprint and feel of the guest houses may have been altered. While the core "Hillside" location still provides access to Ogunquit, the change in property configuration could affect guest expectations regarding the specific environment and accessibility of all units. Guests should clarify the current layout and entrance procedures when booking.
Yellow Monkey Guest Houses typically offers a range of rooms, often with a traditional, older charm. Reviews from long-term guests describe the rooms as "clean and comfortable." While not overtly luxurious, they are designed to provide a functional and pleasant stay. Common amenities often include air conditioning, heating, and televisions with cable channels. Some rooms may feature private bathrooms, while others might have shared facilities, with one older review mentioning a "comfortable room with sink, closet, cable-TV" and a "shared bath." Kitchenette facilities, including microwaves and refrigerators, are often available in some units, adding convenience for guests who wish to prepare their own meals or store snacks. Free WiFi is also typically available, although its reliability or speed is not explicitly detailed in reviews.
A unique characteristic mentioned by a long-time guest is "a little bit of a mothball smell," which some do not mind, suggesting a particular scent associated with older, well-maintained properties. The property is also noted as being pet-friendly on request, though it's always advisable to confirm the specific pet policy and any associated fees directly with the guest houses, as policies can vary based on room type or availability.
However, the most recent review highlights severe issues with the consistency and quality of the accommodations under current management. This includes a major problem with a booking being given away without explanation, which is a serious concern for reliability. While not directly about the physical room, the review implies a significant decline in operational standards that could impact the cleanliness and readiness of rooms. The comment, "Overall, it felt like proper cleaning was not done after the previous guests had left which led to an unpleasant stay for me," is particularly concerning, suggesting potential issues with basic room hygiene. Other past reviews have also mentioned concerns about not being able to tell if towels were fresh or used, and instances of rooms smelling like cigarettes or dust. These issues point to a potential lack of consistent quality control in room preparation.
Historically, the Yellow Monkey Guest Houses have been known for their friendly and personal service, with guests noting that "The owners are very friendly and usually book your room themselves." This hands-on approach contributed to many years of positive experiences and repeat customers, with some staying for "over 20 years" and praising "Victor's days when things ran smoothly."
However, the most recent and critical review paints a starkly different picture of current management and service. It describes a situation where a booked room was "given away without any explanation," with the manager, "Jonathan," claiming not to "remember speaking with" the guest despite "multiple calls" for booking confirmation. This incident suggests a significant lapse in reservation management and customer communication. The reviewer also mentions "the side street was also under construction," which could impact access and the overall guest experience, indicating a lack of transparency regarding external factors. These severe negative experiences regarding booking reliability and transparency are critical for potential guests to consider.
Amenities, such as a complimentary continental breakfast, have been mentioned in older descriptions, and free parking is available. However, given the recent operational issues, it would be prudent for guests to confirm the availability and quality of all services directly with the guest houses before booking. The property's BBB profile states it offers "45 rooms, complimentary continental breakfast and a jacuzzi and fitness area," but recent reviews do not confirm the current status of these amenities. Trivago notes that The Yellow Monkey does not offer a pool area.
The Yellow Monkey Guest Houses have historically been attractive for their competitive pricing, with guests stating, "You cannot beat the location or the price." There's even a mention that "Sometimes if you pay cash, the rooms are even cheaper," suggesting potential for direct booking benefits. Its long-standing presence in Ogunquit also speaks to a history of attracting loyal clientele.
However, in light of the very recent and severe negative review regarding booking reliability and overall management, prospective guests should exercise extreme caution. While the location remains a strong point, the reported operational issues could significantly impact a vacation experience. It is highly recommended to:
Check-in and check-out times are typically from 2:30 PM for check-in. The address provided, 290 Main St, is consistent across various platforms. The property started business in 1970, indicating a long history in the area.
Yellow Monkey Guest Houses in Ogunquit, Maine, offers a historically charming and affordably priced accommodation option with a prime central location. Long-time guests have praised its friendly owners and comfortable, clean rooms. However, recent and highly critical feedback indicates a significant decline in operational standards, particularly regarding booking reliability, management responsiveness, and potentially room cleanliness, following changes to the property (sale of front buildings). While the location remains highly desirable for accessing Ogunquit's attractions, prospective visitors searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" must be aware of these serious concerns. It is paramount to verify all booking details directly and have realistic expectations about the current state of services and management before committing to a stay at Yellow Monkey Guest Houses.

Dec 01, 2021 · R. R.BEWARE! I have been staying at this establishment for over 20 years. We never had any issues and would even come up in the Fall months. I had booked a room for last weekend with "Jonathan." It required multiple calls but was assured that I had a room and that check-in was after 2:30 pm. When I arrived at the property I was never told that the front buildings were sold. Ringing the doorbell with no answer. I finally noticed the signs out front were removed. It was an omen of bad things to come... I called "Jonathan" who stated that the Hillside property was were to check-in. (the side street was also under construction.) Upon driving over two hours- I was told - "I don't remember speaking with you. The room was given away without any explanation. The property is now only on the Hillside as the front properties have all been sold off. No explanation, no reimbursement for gas, no options to stay anywhere in the immediate area. Maybe its time to sell off the remaining parcels as well as managing this property appears to be more than you can handle. Peter thank you for 20 great summers. We wont be back after many years of fond memories back in Victor's days when things ran smoothly. He would be so embarrassed if he was still alive. Shame on you!
Jul 28, 2022 · Stephen CynewskiI love this place. They treat you like family. They go above and beyond a simple B & B. You can walk to the beach, lots of restaurants within walking distance. The clients are very outgoing and friendly. My rooms have always been spotless. I look forward to going back, year after year.
