Very beautiful and historic (but dated) hotel directly across from the White House. I stayed here over a long weekend and, while I was pleased with the architecture and decor, I realized the actual condition of the rooms and in-room amenities are not worthy of 5-stars. Doors do not close properly, paint is chipping, furniture is noticeably damaged, some decorative wall and fireplace elements have been painted over way too many times, the water pressure was mediocre, the bathroom itself was extremely outdated, the gym is inexcusably and awkwardly tiny (you won't want to work out here), and the business center looked straight out of a business consultant's worst nightmare from the 1990's. Furthermore, my room did not have electrical outlets on either side of the bed, which is absolutely inexcusable for any hotel after 1980. I had to charge my devices at the work desk every night, which was very inconvenient. If this was labeled as a 4 star hotel, none of these would be major issues (well, maybe the lack of electrical outlets), but at the 5 star level, this is not okay. On the other hand, the service was phenomenal, as is the restaurant. Front desk and concierge staff were top-notch as you would expect. Everything was spotless, perfectly clean, and organized. This hotel needs a renovation, but it is a wonder to see how much love and care the staff puts into it.

The Hay-Adams Introduce

For those of us who call Washington D.C. home, or for our discerning friends and family visiting from out of town, there are certain landmarks that simply define our city. Located directly across from the iconic White House, this hotel is more than just a place to stay; it's an institution, a piece of living D.C. history, and a testament to timeless elegance. When considering a special occasion, a luxurious staycation, or simply a recommendation for guests who appreciate unparalleled location and service, The Hay-Adams consistently comes to mind.

Opened in 1928, The Hay-Adams occupies the site of the former homes of two influential friends, John Hay (Abraham Lincoln's private secretary) and Henry Adams (grandson of John Quincy Adams), giving the hotel its distinctive name and a rich backstory. This Italian Renaissance monument exudes a classic charm that is truly unique in our modern city. While some might describe its decor as "traditional" or "historic," it is precisely this authentic character that draws many to its doors. It's a place where you can feel the echoes of history while being pampered by a dedicated staff committed to perfection.

One of the most remarkable aspects of The Hay-Adams, consistently highlighted by those who experience it, is its phenomenal service. While the hotel embraces its historic architecture and decor, it's the warmth and dedication of the staff that truly make it shine, ensuring every detail is "spotless, perfectly clean, and organized." Perfect location. If you can, get a room with views of Lafayette park for stunning views of the white house. Rooms are traditional and tasteful. Might sometimes get a bit rowdy with weddings but only minor issue. Bar downstairs is a proper DC hot spot. Highly recommended.

I came for a business event at the top floor space that overlooks LaFayette Square. This hotel offers truly iconic views of DC in a luxury environment. The staff were exceptional on entry to guide me to the event space and provided excellent service throughout the evening.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) The Hay-Adams is truly exceptional! My cousin’s wedding reception here was nothing short of perfection. From the cocktail hour to the dinner and dancing, everything was flawlessly executed. The service was top-notch—attentive, professional, and welcoming. The food was absolutely delicious, and the drinks were expertly crafted. The elegant ambiance and breathtaking views made the night even more special. We all had an unforgettable time and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Highly recommend for any special occasion!

We did not have a room here but a review is called for. The reason? We attended Thomas More Society Event there last night and the hotel hospitality was faultless. The environment wonderful. In all I spoke to 9 people in the Foyer and meeting room area and we used their Valet Parking & Tips which is of course expensive. Every single member of staff was a true delight to deal with including all those who enabled parking, the Hungarian Concierge gentleman and Dutch young lady through to the staff serving and hosting the event itself. I am fortunate to have stayed in several hotels of this quality but have never seen so many genuine smiles, such appreciation of humor and such happy team work before. We expect to update this review with a stay, or at least a dinner there soon. First impressions could simply not have been better! If you fancy a special place to stay in D.C. I have to recommend you try this establishment. More to follow...
