Environment: A Harmonious Geodesic Dome in Nature's Embrace

The most striking aspect of The Human-Nature Hostel is its unique architectural design: a timber-frame geodesic dome. This structure is not just visually stunning but also fosters a distinctive, calming energy. As one guest eloquently put it, "When you walk in it embraces you and welcomes you with love and warmth." The dome's design allows for a spacious and airy interior, a welcome respite, especially on humid summer days.

The hostel is nestled in the picturesque Western Maine mountains, offering breathtaking natural beauty. The environment is one of tranquility and peace, conducive to a deep sense of calm, which many guests highlight. The presence of incense and calm music further enhances this serene atmosphere, creating a true retreat from the stresses of modern life. The property itself is substantial, spanning 42 acres of land, which allows for a feeling of seclusion and direct connection to the wilderness. There are reports of fresh produce being grown on-site, further emphasizing the hostel's connection to nature and sustainable living.

Being situated in Roxbury, a quaint town known for its stunning views of surrounding lakes and forests, the hostel serves as an excellent base for exploring the region. While the address is Roxbury, it has also been associated with Andover, indicating its proximity to key hiking trails and natural attractions in both areas. The presence of gentle dogs, often seen wandering around, adds to the welcoming and home-like feel, embracing the "human-nature" ethos.

Services: Nurturing the Body and Soul

The Human-Nature Hostel is renowned for its exceptional hospitality, largely attributed to its host, affectionately known as "White Owl." Guests consistently praise his warm, sweet, and kind demeanor, with one reviewer calling him "the most amazing" and their "favorite owl human." This personalized and heartfelt welcome is a hallmark of the hostel's service, immediately making guests feel "Welcome home."

Beyond the warm greeting, White Owl is celebrated for his culinary skills. Guests have raved about his cooking, noting his attentiveness to individual dietary needs. This goes beyond typical hostel offerings, providing nourishing and delicious meals that contribute significantly to the overall positive experience, especially for hikers who need replenishment after long treks.

The hostel provides essential amenities for a comfortable stay. Accommodation is typically in bunkhouse-style rooms, but with mattresses described as "what heaven must feel like," ensuring a restful night's sleep. High-speed internet (Wi-Fi) is available on-site, allowing guests to stay connected if desired, despite the secluded feel. Laundry facilities are also provided, which is a crucial service, especially for long-distance hikers who often require a place to refresh their gear.

For those arriving without their own vehicle, the hostel offers shuttle services, particularly beneficial for Appalachian Trail hikers, who are a significant portion of their clientele. This support system, including pick-up and drop-off from the trail and occasional trips for resupply (e.g., to Walmart or local towns like Andover), greatly enhances the convenience for travelers. The hostel is also noted to be pet-friendly, accommodating guests who travel with their furry companions, although specific charges or policies for pets should be confirmed.

Features: A Haven for Hikers and Spiritual Seekers

The Human-Nature Hostel’s primary feature is its strong connection to the Appalachian Trail (AT). It serves as a vital stop for thru-hikers, offering a haven of rest, sustenance, and community along their arduous journey. The hostel's atmosphere and the energy of the geodesic dome are described as providing "the motivation and drive to make that final push" for hikers, making it more than just a waypoint but a place of mental and spiritual recharge. It has consistently ranked among the top hostels for AT hikers, highlighting its importance and positive reputation within the hiking community.

Beyond its role as a hiker hostel, The Human-Nature Hostel also functions as a unique retreat location. Its focus extends to "retreat programs focused on survival skills, reconnecting with nature, and supporting veterans," according to some sources. This suggests a broader mission beyond basic accommodation, aiming to foster personal growth and healing through nature immersion and specialized programs. The owner, "White Owl" (reportedly Ryan Holt, a veteran and former "Naked and Afraid" contestant), brings a unique perspective and experience to these offerings, emphasizing self-reliance and connection to the wilderness.

The hostel’s design and ethos promote a sense of communal living. The open doors, shared spaces, and interaction with other guests and the host create an environment where connections are easily forged. This communal aspect, combined with the peaceful setting, contributes to the "magical and awe-inspired retreat" experience that leaves visitors feeling "full of love and so happy."

As a distinctive "geodesic dome experience," it caters to those looking for something beyond traditional hotel stays. The emphasis on "human-nature" suggests a philosophy of harmony between people and their environment, making it attractive to environmentally conscious travelers and those seeking an authentic, minimalist, yet deeply comforting stay.

Stayed at the hostel in August of 2022, on a humid summer day. Arriving at the hostel, I was greeted by White Owl and his two beautiful gentle dogs. "Welcome home brother" Walking through the door, it was cool and spacious. It truly felt like Home. The energy when you walk in the door is something I can't describe. With the incense and calm music, I hadn't felt such a sense of calm in a long time. He was such a great cook, and was attentive to other hikers dietary needs. The bunk mattresses are what heaven must feel like. The atmosphere, and energy of the dome gives you the motivation and drive to make that final push. Thank you White Owl, for making this beautiful space. 🌞☯️🕉☮️

What an amazing place to visit, relax, refresh and be inspired! I was able to participate in the first workshop held here at the Human Nature Hostel, in the beautifully designed and crafted geodesic dome. Ryan's passion and vision to create this hostel for it's many uses for hikers, travelers, healers and those who seek to connect with nature and the inner self is profound. I was warmly welcomed as soon as I arrived. Wonderful people, good vibes, and hard work and VISION has created this place. I look forward to returning and seeing the progress.

Yukon is hands down one of the most selfless person I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. The place is immaculate, the views are spectacular, the pups are entertaining, the outdoor showers are liberating, the beds are comfortable, and the breakfast is mouthwatering and filling. Definitely worth going to and enjoying what he has built for others.
