Travellers BEWARE: food is terrible, rooms are like a dungeon, elevator has been broken for years, the smell smells worse the an old bar that had a smoking section, bug infested rooms and extremely poor customer service. I asked for the hotel to get back to me about my experience because if you leave a bad review on here the manager goes absolutely crazy with attacking and will refuse to communicate…. However the owners and managers refuse to communicate with anyone in general. I guess maybe that’s because I’m not American and the minute the guy behind the desk noticed my different accent he was extremely rude towards me from the beginning. I said hello and his smile changed and he wanted me out.
For those searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" in Watertown, New York, with a primary focus on affordability, The Inn at 81 presents itself as a budget-conscious lodging option. Located at 1190 Arsenal St, Watertown, NY 13601, USA, this establishment has operated under various names, including Travelodge by Wyndham Watertown and Continental Inn by OYO, indicating a history of management changes that may contribute to inconsistencies in guest experiences.
The environment of The Inn at 81, based on recent guest reviews, suggests a property that has seen better days and is in need of significant updates and maintenance. While some older descriptions might mention "warm quarters" and a "relaxed budget hotel," current feedback paints a more challenging picture. Guests describe rooms as "like a dungeon" and note pervasive "smells worse than an old bar that had a smoking section." Cleanliness appears to be a major concern, with mentions of "bug infested rooms" and rooms "not as clean as some of the other places." The general consensus regarding the property's ambiance is that it is "a bit rough" and "definitely needed an upgrade." This suggests that while it may offer a low price point, the trade-off is often in the overall condition and atmosphere of the hotel.
In terms of services, the provided reviews indicate significant issues with customer service. Guests report "extremely poor customer service," with managers and owners refusing to communicate directly, particularly if a negative experience is reported. There are also concerning allegations of rudeness from staff members, potentially based on guest's accents or origin. This suggests that while basic front desk operations may exist, the level of guest support and problem resolution can be highly unsatisfactory. An important note is that the elevator has been reported as "broken for years," which is a substantial accessibility concern for guests with mobility issues or heavy luggage, requiring them to use stairs. Daily housekeeping is typically a standard service, along with a 24-hour front desk, though the quality of these services appears inconsistent.
Regarding features, The Inn at 81 does offer some fundamental amenities typically found in budget hotels. Each room usually includes air-conditioning, a private bathroom with free toiletries, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels (possibly premium channels), a telephone, and complimentary WiFi access. For convenience, rooms often come equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, and coffee/tea maker, which can be useful for guests looking to save on dining costs. The hotel typically provides a seasonal outdoor pool, which, when operational, can be a refreshing amenity during warmer months. Complimentary continental breakfast is also generally offered, although the quality and variety of the food have received negative feedback, with one review stating "food is terrible." Other common facilities include free self-parking, and potentially RV/bus/truck parking (which may incur a fee), laundry facilities, a vending machine, and free newspapers in the lobby. There might also be a picnic area and barbecue grills for guest use.
The location of The Inn at 81 at 1190 Arsenal St places it conveniently off Interstate 81, making it accessible for travelers passing through Watertown. It is situated in a shopping district, which means guests have access to various retail and dining establishments nearby. The hotel is within a few minutes' drive of central Watertown. Its proximity to major local points of interest such as Fort Drum (home of the 10th Mountain Division) makes it a consideration for military personnel and their families, or contractors. Other regional attractions like the Thousand Islands, Lake Ontario, and the Canadian border are also within a reasonable driving distance, positioning it as a potential base for exploring the North Country. Watertown International Airport (ART) is typically less than 10 minutes away, adding to its practical location for air travelers.
In terms of promotional information, the primary 'promotion' of The Inn at 81 appears to be its low price point. As a budget hotel, it often offers some of the most competitive rates in the area. However, potential guests should be aware that this affordability comes with significant trade-offs, as indicated by the critical reviews. Given its past affiliations with brands like Travelodge by Wyndham and OYO, it might have offered specific brand loyalty program benefits (like Wyndham Rewards), but direct booking and current affiliation should be verified. Pets are generally not allowed at this property, and a damage deposit is often required upon arrival. It is strongly advised for prospective guests to contact the hotel directly at (315) 788-6800 or +1 315-788-6800 to confirm current conditions, amenities, and policies before making a reservation, especially considering the consistent negative feedback regarding cleanliness, maintenance, and customer service. Guests are also warned about potential difficulties in communication or resolution of issues, suggesting that setting realistic expectations and being prepared for potential challenges is crucial.
In conclusion, The Inn at 81, while aiming to be a budget-friendly option in the "Hotels Near Of Me" category in Watertown, NY, presents a challenging picture based on recent customer experiences. While it offers basic amenities like free WiFi, a seasonal outdoor pool, and continental breakfast, severe criticisms regarding cleanliness, maintenance, customer service, and the overall environment are prominent. Travelers prioritizing low cost might consider it, but those seeking comfort, reliable service, and a pleasant stay are strongly advised to consider other options in the area, even if it means a slightly higher expenditure.

Oct 01, 2024 · KeeleynDaniel ToddWell, it's cheap but that's about the only positive here. I spent one night here and that was the is enough for me. The room was a bit rough and definitely needed an upgrade. It's not as clean as some of the other places I have stayed in the area. My advice would be to spend a little more and get a better room somewhere else.
Jul 31, 2024 · Rocco ConteWe have used this facility several times and we never had any ssues. Continental breakfast is fine, rooms were cleaned and staff were respectful. Great location for shopping and visiting the surrounding areas.
Aug 09, 2022 · JR BriseboisStayed one night and that was enough. This place needs severe up grading and a good cleaning. All the furniture was banged up, old and the chair in our room was ripped. The towels were flimsy and dingy . The lamps and shades were dusty . Pillows were horrible and old Clearly whoever owns this place does not care about customer service or the quality of their establishment. We were unfamiliar neither the area and chose poorly. There is more than enough other motels including right next door , which we would have move to, but hubby paid online in advance . Spend your money elsewhere .
Oct 08, 2017 · Tracy CarsonQuite a few problems with this hotel. There was an outlet that was falling out of the wall, is probably the biggest one. Room service cleaned our room and took all of the towels, when we called the front desk, they had my wife go into the laundry room to get her own out of the dryer. Same thing with bathroom tissue... Room was clean, though. Overall, not a great experience and would not stay again.
