U Street Hostel was such a cool and unique experience! You sleep in a capsule, which I was a little unsure about at first, but it turned out to be super comfortable. The bed was cozy, and I loved having control of the AC inside the capsule—it gave me the privacy and comfort I needed after long days exploring DC. The vibe of the place is great, very relaxed and social, and the staff was friendly. Bathrooms are shared, but they were clean and well-kept. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for a fun and affordable stay!

U Street Hostel Introduce

For residents of the District of Columbia and those seeking a distinctive and budget-friendly lodging experience in the heart of the city, the U Street Hostel offers a fresh alternative to conventional hotels. Located at 1931 13th St NW, Washington, DC 20009, USA, this establishment is known for its unique capsule-style sleeping arrangements and its vibrant location. This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and factual overview of the U Street Hostel from a local D.C. perspective, highlighting its unique attributes and suitability for various needs, from staycations to hosting out-of-town guests.

The U Street Hostel stands out as a "capsule hostel," a concept that originated in Japan and is gaining popularity for its blend of affordability and privacy. Instead of traditional bunk beds in dorms, guests sleep in individual "capsules" or "pods." Reviews from real customers highlight the surprising comfort and privacy these capsules offer, often equipped with personal amenities like adjustable AC and comfortable bedding. This unique setup provides a sense of personal space, even within a shared dorm environment, making it a compelling option for those who are budget-conscious but still value their own corner. The hostel embraces a relaxed and social vibe, fostering a sense of community among travelers. While shared bathrooms are part of the experience, guests consistently praise their cleanliness and maintenance. The U Street Hostel has also undergone a full renovation in January 2022, ensuring a modern and updated experience. It's an excellent choice for individuals looking for a "fun and affordable" stay, whether they are visiting D.C. for a short trip, a business conference, or even considering a local "staycation" to explore their own city from a new perspective.

Location and Accessibility

The U Street Hostel boasts an enviable address at 1931 13th St NW, placing it squarely in the vibrant and historic U Street Corridor. This location is one of its most significant assets, offering unparalleled accessibility to some of D.C.'s most dynamic neighborhoods and key attractions.

The hostel is just a short walk (steps away, according to some descriptions) from the U Street / African-American Civil War Memorial / Cardozo Metro station on the Green and Yellow Lines. This provides immediate and convenient access to the city's extensive public transportation network. From this station, guests can easily reach major landmarks such as the National Mall, Smithsonian museums, the White House, and Capitol Hill, typically with just a few Metro stops or a single transfer. Union Station, a major hub for Amtrak and regional buses, is also readily accessible by Metro or a short bus ride. The convenience of public transit means guests can navigate D.C. efficiently without the need for a personal vehicle, saving on parking costs and traffic hassles.

Beyond its Metro connectivity, the U Street neighborhood itself is a destination. Known for its rich cultural history, particularly its ties to jazz and African-American heritage, U Street today buzzes with a lively nightlife, diverse restaurants, cafes, and independent shops. Iconic spots like Ben's Chili Bowl are just a stone's throw away, offering authentic D.C. experiences. The area is highly walkable, with a "Walker's Paradise" score, meaning daily errands and local exploration can be done entirely on foot. Nearby amenities include grocery stores, making it easy for guests to utilize the hostel's shared kitchen facilities. While the area can be lively at night, it is generally considered safe, offering a vibrant atmosphere. This strategic location truly allows guests to immerse themselves in the authentic D.C. urban lifestyle.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a hostel focused on providing affordable and unique accommodations, the U Street Hostel's promotions often revolve around value and convenience. While they may not feature complex packages like larger hotels, guests can often find benefits through:

  • Direct Booking Savings: Booking directly through the U Street Hostel's official website or by calling them can sometimes yield the best available rates, as it bypasses third-party commissions.

  • Free Internet: A consistent offering that adds value to every stay, allowing guests to stay connected without extra charges.

  • Brew On U Cafe Discount: Guests typically receive a 10% discount on purchases at the on-site Brew On U Cafe, providing a convenient and slightly more affordable option for coffee and light refreshments. The Goki app might also feature special deals exclusively for patrons.

  • Flexible Booking and Free Cancellation: Many booking platforms, and often the hostel directly, offer flexible cancellation policies (e.g., up to 24 hours prior to arrival for individual reservations) which is a significant benefit for travelers whose plans might change.

  • Longer Stay Value: Hostels inherently offer better per-night value for longer stays compared to hotels, and while not explicitly advertised as a "promotion," this intrinsic benefit makes it attractive for extended visits.

  • Occasional Deals via Booking Platforms: Keep an eye on major travel websites, as they occasionally feature discounted rates or special offers for hostels, especially during off-peak seasons.

It's always recommended to check the U Street Hostel's official website or contact them directly to inquire about any current promotions or the best rates for your specific travel dates.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For residents of the District of Columbia, the U Street Hostel offers a surprisingly relevant and valuable option for several local scenarios, extending beyond its appeal to international backpackers.

Firstly, for those considering a "staycation," the U Street Hostel provides an incredibly unique and affordable way to experience D.C. from a fresh perspective. Instead of staying in your usual neighborhood, you can immerse yourself in the vibrant U Street Corridor, known for its rich history, live music venues, and diverse culinary scene. The capsule experience itself is a novel comfort, offering personal space and modern amenities within a shared environment. It's a fantastic option for a quick, budget-friendly urban getaway where you can easily explore new parts of your city, enjoy the nightlife, and still have a cozy, private spot to retreat to after a day of exploration. The relaxed, social atmosphere also makes it appealing if you're looking to meet new people or simply enjoy a different social dynamic.

Secondly, if you frequently host out-of-town guests, especially younger friends, students, or family members who are budget-conscious or enjoy a more communal travel style, suggesting the U Street Hostel is an excellent idea. It provides a clean, safe, and conveniently located base for them to explore D.C. independently. The proximity to the U Street Metro station means they can easily reach all major attractions without needing you for transportation, allowing for more flexibility for both parties. The affordability can significantly reduce their travel costs, making a visit to D.C. more feasible for them. The unique capsule experience and the hostel's social environment can also add a memorable dimension to their trip, turning their stay into an experience in itself, rather than just a place to sleep.

Lastly, for D.C. locals who might need temporary, short-term accommodation for various reasons—perhaps during home renovations, a temporary work assignment, or a need for a quiet space away from home to focus—the U Street Hostel offers a pragmatic solution. Its combination of affordability, prime location, cleanliness, and essential amenities (like Wi-Fi and laundry) provides a functional and comfortable base without the high cost of a traditional hotel. The flexible check-in/out process and 24/7 support via the Goki app also add to its convenience, making it a viable and attractive option for locals seeking a comfortable, unique, and economical stay in their own dynamic city.

Just completed the check-out procedure this morning. While waiting for the later flight schedule, this is my honest review for this hostel as a foreign visitor. Positive sides ; 1. Very welcoming and helpful staff when completing the check-in step. The way the staff explained was very clear and humble 2. Very quiet and peaceful conditions in the male dorm especially at night. Other visitors staying in the same room showed respect and compliance to the rules stated. 3. Accessible water fountain located at basement floor for refill. 4. Cleanliness and sanitation at restroom and pods area are both maintained very well every day, making it comfortable and highly recommended for your temporary stay. 5. Simple check-out procedures, no need to confirm the front desk prior to your leave. The Goki app is automatically the one confirming. However, you have to clean up your pods by removing mattress sheet, pillow case, etc. 6. Accessible location for use of public transportation, grocery and restaurant at DC downtown. You can walk anywhere very conveniently to enjoy your daily activities to the fullest. Negative sides 1. The pod wall is not completely sound-proof. I hope the staff will consider fixing this by adding materials in between boarding pods. During the stay, I could hear someone snoring all nights and that made me feel unwell when sleeping. 2. No hot water at shower room, I was probably wrong not knowing how to adjust the water to warm temperature. This led me to use cold water for bathing all days. Thank you, I'll definitely recommend staying in this place again the next time I visit DC for mid-year trip or business conference.

Stayed for a night. Booked a single room with bathroom. One of the cheapest places you can find for a private room in DC. There is a bus stop right on the corner. Check in process is digital it can completed on your phone before you arrive or on an iPad when you show up. The hostel has a coffee shop. There are two communal laptops. It’s pretty quiet for hostel. The beds were very soft and the bedding was clean. The room was really small, but fine just for sleeping.

What a horrible experience! It was awful from start to finish. I booked a room at the I Street hostel. When I got there, they told me that the construction hadn't been finished and I had to go to the U Street capsule hostel. In other words, I booked one place and was forced to stay at another, with the excuse that “it's not that far away”. To keep me quiet, they allocated me a private room from Monday to Friday. On Thursday I received a message that they were removing all my things from the room because my days in the private room were over, they literally put my things in garbage bags. I found this humiliating, wrong to touch people's things and unethical. Their excuse was that I “didn't understand what they said”. It's very easy to blame the foreigner and say that she didn't understand, when clearly I was going to stay in the private room until Friday. They ignored me on the chat from start to finish. They didn't respond, the GOKI app didn't work properly. After all this I asked for my money back, which is very obvious. They changed my location, didn't tell me, ignored me, put my stuff in trash bags and blamed me for it. What did they do? They ignored me. Terrible experience, everyone said that the other hostel (due) is much better and the people are at least honest and decent. I still want my money back

Easy check in, great location around the corner from the metro and near TONS of food, shops, clubs, bars - there is a Walgreens across the street, a Trader Joe's a block away, and a Whole Foods about 10 minutes walk. Absolutely loved the neighborhood! Beds were super comfy and the view from the balcony was amazing (I stayed in the mixed dorm on the third floor). Having the semi-private balcony was really nice, and not something that is always available at a hostel. Pod-bed-space is also semi-private with a shade, USB power, blue light, white light, and fan in the pod - turn on the fan when you sleep otherwise it gets stuffy. Being able to do laundry was also a plus, with brand new washers/dryers that were super quick (about 70 minutes total). Laundry and showers are on the ground floor, with an elevator so it was not a big deal going up and down. Water pressure was great, and water (maybe DC water) did not dry out my hair (not sure how to describe it, but my hair felt great the whole time there). Lastly, try the blackberry latte and the blueberry muffins! Thank you everyone at U Street, you were so amazing and friendly, I will definitely book again next time I'm in DC!
