Fryemont Inn Introduce

For those seeking a lodging experience steeped in history and natural beauty within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category in Bryson City, North Carolina, the Fryemont Inn offers a distinct and memorable choice. Located at 245 Fryemont St, Bryson City, NC 28713, USA, this historic mountain lodge, established in 1923, is celebrated for its unique ambiance, stunning views, and a traditional approach to hospitality.

Environment: Historic Mountain Lodge with Panoramic Views

The Fryemont Inn is more than just a hotel; it's a piece of history nestled in the scenic grandeur of the Great Smoky Mountains. Built in 1923, the inn is a true "historic mountain lodge" and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its architecture and design, featuring "massive stone fireplaces and rustic charm," evoke a sense of timeless elegance and warmth. The exterior, primarily made of chestnut wood, blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Guests are greeted by a large, inviting lobby with a grand fireplace, encouraging relaxation and conversation.

The location on Fryemont Street provides an elevated position, offering "unparalleled panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains and the valley below." Imagine enjoying a breathtaking sunset or sunrise from the inn's common areas or, for some rooms, from private balconies. The inn boasts an "expansive veranda with rocking chairs," an iconic feature that invites guests to sit back, relax, and soak in the fresh mountain air and stunning vistas. There is also a "large lawn area" for outdoor enjoyment.

The environment fosters a sense of tranquility and escape, perfect for those looking to disconnect and appreciate nature. While offering a peaceful retreat, the inn is still conveniently located. It's approximately one mile from downtown Bryson City, allowing guests to easily access the town's shops, restaurants, and the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. This balance of secluded mountain charm and reasonable proximity to local attractions makes its environment highly appealing. The inn is also situated near numerous outdoor activities, including hiking trails, fly fishing streams, and opportunities for whitewater rafting and kayaking in the surrounding national forest and parklands.

Services: Traditional Hospitality and Southern Dining

The Fryemont Inn is known for its traditional approach to hospitality, emphasizing a classic mountain lodge experience. The service is characterized by "the best" people who work there, suggesting a friendly and dedicated staff. The ambiance itself is a key part of the service, creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for guests.

Key services at the Fryemont Inn typically include:

  • Dining Room: The inn features a traditional dining room, serving breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is a noteworthy offering, with a "full country breakfast" served from 8 AM to 10 AM. While one guest wished for a later breakfast, the set hours ensure a consistent dining schedule. Dinner is also a highlight, with the dining room known for its "traditional Southern comfort food," "family-style" service, and offerings like prime rib, lamb shanks, and pecan-crusted trout. Both breakfast and dinner are included in the lodging package during the primary season (mid-April to Thanksgiving). It's important to note that the dining room often requires reservations, especially for non-guests.

  • Guest Rooms & Cabins: The inn offers a variety of accommodations, including "traditional guest rooms" within the main lodge (37 unique rooms) and "private guest cottages" or "cabins" (8 luxury fireplace suites and a 2-bedroom cabin). The lodge rooms often feature period furnishings, private baths, and some may have private balconies. The cabins provide a more secluded experience, often equipped with fireplaces and mini-refrigerators. All accommodations are designed for comfort, though they maintain a historic aesthetic rather than modern luxury.

  • Outdoor Pool: A seasonal outdoor swimming pool is available for guests, providing a refreshing amenity during warmer months, accompanied by a spacious pool deck.

  • Fireside Bar: The "quaint Fireside Bar" is highlighted as a favorite gathering place before and after dinner, offering wines and cocktails.

  • Common Areas: The inn provides inviting common spaces, such as the large lobby with its fireplace, a reading lounge, and the extensive veranda, where guests can relax, socialize, or enjoy the views.

  • Front Desk/Guest Assistance: As a full-service inn, a front desk is available to assist guests with check-in, check-out, and local information.

  • Parking: On-site parking is typically available for guests.

It is important to note that the Fryemont Inn's Historic Lodge and Dining Room operate seasonally, typically from mid-April through Thanksgiving weekend. The Stone Cottage Suites, Balcony Suites, and Cabin are open all year, though winter rates for these accommodations do not include meals. While the inn aims to provide excellent service, a past review highlights a potential issue with communication regarding dining reservations, indicating that it's always best for guests to confirm details directly.

Features: Timeless Charm and Recreational Amenities

The Fryemont Inn's features are deeply tied to its historical identity and natural surroundings:

  • Historic Architecture: The inn's 1923 architecture, built from American chestnut, is a defining feature, giving it a unique character and a sense of stepping back in time. Its listing on the National Register of Historic Places further underscores this.

  • Panoramic Mountain Views: Its elevated position provides stunning, sweeping views of the Smoky Mountains and the valley, a major draw for guests.

  • Expansive Veranda: The wide, rocker-lined porch is an iconic feature, offering an ideal spot for relaxation and enjoying the views.

  • Traditional Dining Room: The presence of an on-site dining room serving classic Southern meals contributes significantly to the full lodge experience, offering convenience and a taste of local cuisine.

  • Outdoor Swimming Pool: A valuable amenity during the warmer months, providing recreational opportunities for guests.

  • Variety of Accommodations: The choice between main lodge rooms and more private cabins caters to different preferences and needs, from couples to families. Many rooms retain original fixtures like claw-foot tubs, adding to the historic charm.

  • Fireside Bar: An inviting on-site bar for evening relaxation and socializing.

  • Proximity to Outdoor Activities: The inn's location makes it a prime base for exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Deep Creek area), whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River, hiking, and fishing.

  • Close to Downtown Bryson City: While offering a tranquil setting, it's still conveniently about one mile close to the town's attractions, including the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.

  • Family-Owned: The inn has been owned by the same family since 1982, contributing to its consistent charm and dedicated hospitality.

Promotional Information and Guest Considerations

The Fryemont Inn's "promotional information" primarily revolves around its unique historical charm, scenic beauty, and traditional hospitality, appealing to those seeking a distinct mountain retreat rather than a modern hotel. The inn's status as a "must visit beautiful place in Bryson City" is a strong endorsement from past guests.

While specific promotional deals are not detailed in the provided reviews, the inn's appeal often lies in its overall value as a unique destination. Guests are drawn by the promise of stepping back in time, enjoying traditional meals (often included in the primary season lodging rate), and relaxing in a picturesque setting. Given its seasonal operation (Historic Lodge and Dining Room typically open from mid-April through Thanksgiving), this timing itself serves as a promotional aspect, suggesting a focus on the most pleasant seasons for mountain visits.

For potential guests searching "Hotels Near Of Me," it is crucial to note the following:

  • Seasonal Operation: Confirm the operating dates for the specific type of accommodation you are interested in, as the Historic Lodge and Dining Room are closed from late November to mid-April. Some cabins and suites are open year-round, but meals are not included in winter rates.

  • Dining Reservations: Especially if you are not a registered guest, it is highly advisable to confirm dining reservations well in advance by calling directly at (828) 488-2159 or +1 828-488-2159, and re-confirming, to avoid disappointment, as indicated by past issues.

  • Historic Nature: While updated, the inn retains its historic character. This means it may not offer all the sleek, modern amenities of a newly built hotel. Guests should embrace its nostalgic charm; for instance, rooms maintain a rustic feel. Wi-Fi is available, but speeds typical of modern urban hotels should not necessarily be expected.

  • No Pets in Historic Lodge: While a specific cabin is noted as pet-friendly, generally, the historic lodge itself does not accommodate pets.

Despite some past isolated issues, the overarching sentiment from many guests is one of deep affection for the Fryemont Inn's unique character and the friendly people who run it. It continues to be a beloved local institution and a cherished destination for those looking for an authentic and memorable Smoky Mountain experience in Bryson City.

We had call last week for and reservation for breakfast. The Inn told us that we did not need one and they would be happy to see our group for breakfast. We showed up this morning and the Inn turns us away. We had eaten there numerous times over the last twenty years. It seems like they were always having issues, but we hung in there with the Inn. We have family in Bryson City and had grown up in Bryson City. We try to support local businesses., but sometimes relationships must come to a end.

Did not stay at the Inn, but will if we come back! Saw the rooms as we were walking out. Food, portions, quality, service were all sensational! Old country feel and home made cooking. Alice is the best!

The lodge has a lot of character, wonderful staff that treat you like family, and a very relaxing atmosphere. The only negative is that there is no air conditioning in the rooms.

This place was recommended to us for breakfast and it was a sure treat! Upon arrival, Big Steve greeted us immediately. We arrived about 45 minutes before they opened for breakfast @8:00am, but he offered us some coffee in the meantime and provided a lot of history of the Fryemont Inn. Big Steve really brought everything together the way he thoroughly explained all the details of the Inn. After a long sit on the back porch overlooking Bryson City, we were thoroughly relaxed. Breakfast was fantastic. Julia greeted us in the dinning area and provided exceptional service. She was the only waitress, but she wasn’t no ordinary waitress. She perfectly handled about 8 tables with no issues and never missed a beat. Not something you see often anymore. Food was better than expected! Great job Julia! Be sure to give Big Steve a big hug too, he’s a real great guy! It’s nice to have a good neighbor!
