I cannot think of a better hotel experience that the one I had at GrayBarns, and I already can't wait to return! The rooms were spacious, cozy, and furnished with the most incredible attention to detail: fluffy robes and Frette slippers, a soaking tub with bath salts, gorgeous furniture, a generous bountiful free breakfast each morning with fresh ingredients, friendly and helpful staff, a sleek fitness studio, and an in-house restaurant. The inn is situated on a river with a willow tree, and the entire hotel experience was tranquil and rejuvenating. Thank you GrayBarns for an exceptional stay!

GrayBarns on the Silvermine River Introduce

For local users searching on "Hotels Near Of Me" in Norwalk, Connecticut, GrayBarns on the Silvermine River presents itself not just as a hotel, but as an experience—a meticulously curated sanctuary where luxury meets historic charm. Located at 194 Perry Ave, Norwalk, CT 06850, USA, this hidden gem offers a sophisticated yet comforting escape, blending the tranquility of a riverside setting with impeccable service and high-end amenities.

Environment: A Picturesque Riverside Retreat with Rich History

GrayBarns on the Silvermine River is nestled in a leafy Norwalk neighborhood, situated right alongside the tranquil Silvermine River and Guthrie Pond, with the iconic Silvermine waterfall as a captivating centerpiece. The property itself is steeped in history, dating back to the 17th century when it served as a village meeting place, an artist outpost, and a stagecoach stop. What stands today began as a small textile factory at the turn of the 19th century, later transforming into a speakeasy during the 1920s, and eventually a classic country inn that attracted celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor, Eddie Fisher (who honeymooned here), Spencer Tracy, and Lauren Bacall in the mid-20th century.

The ambiance is one of serene beauty and rustic elegance. The inn's architecture, including reclaimed wood and wide-plank oak floors, respects its historic roots while seamlessly incorporating contemporary design elements. Guests can wander through the picturesque grounds, which feature a kitchen garden and the inn's namesake, a towering old barn that was meticulously deconstructed and reassembled on site. Adirondack chairs and a firepit overlook the river, providing perfect spots for quiet reflection or convivial gatherings. The lush greenery, willow trees, and the soothing sound of the waterfall contribute to a tranquil and rejuvenating atmosphere, making it a true haven from the demands of daily life. The property's charm is further enhanced by its secluded feel, despite being just an hour's drive from New York City.

The in-room amenities are thoughtfully chosen and typically include a complimentary minibar stocked with beer, wine, champagne, and sweet and savory nibbles, a Nespresso machine, Smeg hot water kettle, 47-inch LCD televisions, Bose speakers, and Le Labo or Flamingo Estate bath products, along with bath salts and dry brushes for a complete self-care experience. Gas fireplaces are also available in some rooms, adding to the cozy ambiance.

Features: Culinary Excellence and Versatile Event Spaces

The culinary experience at GrayBarns is central to its appeal. The Tavern at GrayBarns is the on-site restaurant, known for its seasonal farm-to-table American cuisine crafted by Executive Chef Ben Freemole. The rustic-beamed dining room, complete with a dramatic stone fireplace and a grand piano, offers stunning views of the Silvermine River and Guthrie Pond from its bar and terrace. The menu emphasizes fresh ingredients sourced from local farmers, suppliers, and the Tavern's own kitchen garden. In addition to the main dining area, there's a private dining room and an intimate library for after-dinner cocktails. The Mercantile, located across the street from the Inn, serves as a marketplace and neighborhood cafe, offering coffee, pastries, prepared foods, and curated provisions. In the evenings, it transforms into a cocktail lounge.

GrayBarns is also a sought-after venue for events. "The Barn," a reclaimed structure with a soaring roof and open-plan interior, is ideal for community events, private functions, and weddings, accommodating up to 60 people. Its highly customizable nature makes it a blank canvas for various events. The property also features three designated meeting rooms, making it suitable for corporate retreats and business gatherings. The outdoor porch, overlooking Guthrie Pond and the Silvermine River, can be privately booked and offers a weather-protected outdoor venue. The property's overall design, which includes glass elements to modernize the reclaimed barn wood and beams, creates a harmonious blend of old and new.

This place is such a hidden gem. I rented out the full inn with a group of friends (all in our 30s) for a relaxing getaway after a fun night out in the city. Alyssa was so incredibly helpful in helping me book, plan, and pull off the perfect experience (massages, happy hour on the lawn, dinner at the tavern, etc.) The property itself is beautiful with Adirondack chairs and a firepit looking out onto the Silvermine river. The interior is so well done and comfortable we didn't want to leave our rooms. There was no bad suite either. Each was unique yet perfectly appointed. The food from the mercantile and tavern was great, too! I can't speak to the area as we didn't really wander far from the property, but you honestly don't need to - you have everything at your fingertips. Loved every minute and will definitely be back. Thank you again, Alyssa!

This used to be the Silvermine Tavern, and the last time I was there was in the late 1970s when I was a teenager. So I did not recognize the place this time but the food was delicious. I had heard good things about the crispy fried oyster mushrooms, and indeed, they were amazing. Don’t think of the typical greasy deep fry. These mushrooms were light and delicate and the breaded part was more like a dusting of flour. It’s hard to explain but what I’m trying to say is they tasted healthy and good for you. I had the duck for dinner and my friend had the branzino. She doesn’t usually like parsnips but she said the parsnips were delicious. We ate at the Tavern. Did not stay at the Inn.

The ambiance cannot be beat! Romance in a rustic home in the middle of the forest is what it felt like. Only mistake we made was we didn’t book rooms. Wow! Best Branzino I’ve ever had. Everything was delish and priced on point. Excellent service. Must book in advance. Come with family friends or as a couple. Loved it. Only reason not a 5, the patio seats were not comfortable and I was in heels not advised in advance.

After reading many promising reviews on this newly renovated restaurant close to home we decided to get a reservation for a well deserved parents night out. First of all it's almost impossible to get reservation because of its popularity. We happened to get a reservation for two in the bar area. The ambience is clean & inviting but loud. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, but besides that what a disappointment. The food was mediocre & way overpriced. We had a pasta entree with rock shrimp & crab- the amount of seafood in the dish was absurd. The best part of our dinner is what we brought home with us, food poisoning. I did call them voicing my concerns & I did get a call back, but being a restaurant manager myself for many years I expected more than a basic I hope it wasn't us, our seafood is fresh & we hope you visit us again. If anyone knows anything about food & food prep, just because it is fresh doesn't mean anything- there are other factors that can come into play as well. I can promise you right now this was our first & last dining experience there. Just because restaurants are new & trendy does not make them good. As consumers we should expect more. If you decide after reading this review to still visit Graybarns for dinner I do recommend the Russian Mule, it was a great cocktail. ..... this is the first review I have ever written about any establishment.
