This was one of the grossest hotels I’ve been to. I’ve stayed at many red roof inns and it’s never been this bad. The room clearly wasn’t cleaned before we arrived. There were bugs EVERYWHERE both alive and squished to the tile floor and ceiling. It smelled wet and moldy. We tried to nap and decided we absolutely couldn’t even stay the night. We immediately packed up and left. Told our other friends who had reservation here to cancel and head back home. We drove from Detroit to here just to drive back after our event.

HomeTowne Studios Chicago - Waukegan Introduce

Hello, Illinois! When you need a place to stay for an extended period, or simply a budget-friendly option for a night or two, the considerations are different than for a traditional hotel. HomeTowne Studios Chicago - Waukegan positions itself as an extended-stay option, providing essential amenities for guests who need more than just a bed. Located right here in Waukegan, this establishment is often considered by those on a tight budget or with a specific need for a kitchenette in their room. Our aim is to provide a clear and factual overview of this local business, based on publicly available information and a range of customer experiences. We will detail its location, the services it advertises, and the specific feedback from guests, both positive and negative. It's crucial for us as locals to be well-informed before making a booking, especially when planning a trip or hosting visitors. Reviews, whether praising a friendly owner or highlighting serious concerns about cleanliness, offer a vital perspective that goes beyond official descriptions. By presenting this information in a balanced way, we hope to help you make the best choice for your situation. Whether you are looking for a long-term solution or a short-term stay, understanding the full picture of what HomeTowne Studios Chicago - Waukegan offers is the first step. This article is not a recommendation but an informative guide, giving you the necessary details to weigh the pros and cons for yourself and your guests.

HomeTowne Studios Chicago - Waukegan is located at 1177 S Northpoint Blvd, Waukegan, IL 60085, USA. This address places it in a commercial area just off of a major roadway, which is typical for extended-stay properties. Its location provides easy access to several key points of interest in the region. The hotel is situated a few miles from popular attractions like Six Flags Great America and Gurnee Mills, making it a potential option for visitors looking to explore these destinations on a budget. It is also not far from the Naval Station Great Lakes, which can be a key factor for those attending military graduations. For drivers, the motel is conveniently located near US-41 and I-94, which are major routes that connect Waukegan to Chicago and other surrounding suburbs. This accessibility is a practical benefit for anyone traveling by car. However, the neighborhood itself is described by some as being in a business or industrial district, which may not offer the same atmosphere as more central, tourism-focused locations. The area around the motel has various fast-food restaurants, grocery stores like Walmart and Aldi, and other essential services, which is a definite plus for guests on a longer stay who need to stock up on supplies. Despite its practical location for drivers and its proximity to major attractions, the immediate surroundings may not be a highlight for those looking for a scenic or bustling environment. The motel's position offers a no-frills, functional hub for travel, prioritizing easy access over a picturesque setting.

HomeTowne Studios Chicago - Waukegan offers several services geared toward extended-stay guests. The primary focus of these services is to provide a convenient and self-sufficient living space. Here are some of the key services and amenities available:

  • Kitchenettes in Every Room: A standout service is that all rooms come equipped with a kitchenette, including a full-sized refrigerator, stovetop, and microwave. This is ideal for guests who want to save money by cooking their own meals. It's important to note that cookware, dishware, and utensils are not provided but are available for a surcharge or guests can bring their own.
  • Free Wi-Fi: Complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi is available in all rooms and public areas, ensuring guests can stay connected for work or entertainment.
  • On-Site Laundry Facilities: For extended-stay guests, having access to on-site laundry facilities is a crucial convenience. The hotel provides these for guest use.
  • Limited Front Desk Hours: The front desk operates for limited hours, which is a point for guests to be aware of, especially when planning late-night arrivals.
  • Housekeeping Services: The hotel provides weekly housekeeping, with a partial service for bed sheet exchange and trash removal every seven days. Additional housekeeping is available for a fee.
  • Free Parking: Guests are offered free parking on-site, including space for larger vehicles like RVs and trucks.
  • Vending Machines: For quick snacks and drinks, vending machines are available in a common area.
  • Coffee/Tea in Common Area: A complimentary service, though a different offering than a full breakfast, this provides a small convenience for guests in the morning.

The features and highlights of HomeTowne Studios Chicago - Waukegan are a mixed bag, with some guests appreciating the intended value and others raising serious concerns. Here is an overview of the key features and highlights, based on a mix of promotional information and real customer experiences:

  • Kitchenette for Extended Stays: The biggest highlight of this motel is the in-room kitchenette. For individuals or families needing a long-term, affordable stay, the ability to cook meals in their room is a significant cost-saving and convenience feature.
  • Extremely Nice Staff: A key point of praise from a customer review was the "extremely nice owner/front desk" and their "prompt communication and service." The willingness of the staff to help, even lending a phone charger, is a positive aspect that highlights good customer service.
  • Budget-Friendly Option: The motel is positioned as a low-cost lodging choice, making it appealing to travelers on a strict budget. The weekly and monthly rates are designed to be affordable.
  • Significant Cleanliness and Pest Issues: On the other hand, multiple reviews highlight severe issues with cleanliness and pests. One review describes the hotel as "one of the grossest" they've ever stayed at, mentioning bugs "EVERYWHERE," a "wet and moldy" smell, and unsanitary conditions. Another review echoes these concerns, mentioning dirty rooms and a "roach-infested" environment at a similar property, and these are critical points for prospective guests to consider.
  • Inadequate Bedding: A review mentioned that the blankets were "more like flat sheets" and advised future guests to "bring your own if you like a heavy blanket," which is a notable detail about the room amenities.
  • Inconsistent Experience: The stark contrast between the positive feedback on the staff and the serious concerns about the room conditions suggests a highly inconsistent guest experience. This is a critical feature to highlight, as a stay here appears to be a gamble.

As locals, the suitability of HomeTowne Studios Chicago - Waukegan is a nuanced topic. For most residents looking for a clean, safe, and comfortable place for out-of-town guests or a pleasant weekend getaway, the motel's poor reputation for cleanliness and maintenance would make it an unsuitable choice. The severe issues highlighted in multiple reviews, from bugs and mold to dirty conditions, are significant red flags that cannot be overlooked. However, for a very specific type of local user, this motel might be a viable option. This would be a person on an extremely tight budget who needs a long-term place to stay with a kitchenette and is willing to accept a potentially substandard level of cleanliness and comfort. The positive comments about the staff are a good sign that, should an issue arise, there might be a friendly face to help, but this may not be enough to outweigh the major concerns about the rooms themselves. Ultimately, for the average Illinois resident, it is difficult to recommend HomeTowne Studios Chicago - Waukegan for a standard stay. It serves as a reminder to always do your research and read recent reviews, as the reality of a place can be very different from its intended function. For those who prioritize cleanliness and safety above all else, other local options would likely be a much better fit.

Extremely nice owner/front desk, prompt communication and service. They even let me borrow a wall plug to charge my phone when I couldn't find one. The blankets were more like flat sheets, bring your own if you like a heavy blanket.

I think the price is reflected by what to expect. The guy who checked me in, after hours, was extremely friendly and mentioned he was also working on upgrades to the rooms. It is very close to Walmart and Anastasia's restaurant...a local must visit.

DO NOT STAY HERE!! GROSS!! I reserved a room here through Priceline. I arrived around 10pm, checked in and got keys, took my kids up to the room right away and we weren't in the room 3 minutes and I noticed cockroaches on the mini split A.C. unit!! And it didn't take much longer than that before I noticed them in the bathroom and everywhere!!! We left the room right away. I went to go to the desk to demand a refund and the door to the office was locked!! I've still not heard back from Priceline about my refund. I took my kids and slept in our truck at a rest area, getting enuff sleep to continue our drive back to Minnesota. I'll sleep in a vehicle before ever sleeping in a roach infested dive... disgusting. Priceline is getting the next shitty review. I'd give 0 stars if that were an option.

Just like previews review say staff is rude and the rooms are filthy the bottom covers are very stained. The refrigerators aren't clean there is crusty food on them and the faucets and shower heads all have a lot of residue. They have a space heater on top of a table because their regular heater blows cold air but the air hits right on the bed and if you move it it makes the table vibrate. They keep your deposit for normal wear and the manager yells at you while you make a complain. I would advise not to stay there. Independently owned which means they can make their own rules and can be rude with no repercussions.
