For those seeking unique and spacious accommodation when searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" in Louisville, Kentucky, the Howard Hardy House stands out as a distinct and appealing option. Located at 429 S 2nd St, Louisville, KY 40202, USA, this property is not a traditional hotel but rather a meticulously renovated historic multi-unit short-term rental, offering a blend of old-world charm and modern conveniences. While no direct phone number is widely published for general inquiries, booking is typically facilitated through platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo, where hosts provide contact details upon reservation.
The Howard Hardy House is one of only two antebellum homes still standing in downtown Louisville, lending it a significant historical charm. It has been recently renovated to serve as a multi-unit short-term rental destination, maintaining its historic essence while incorporating contemporary comforts. Guests consistently describe the environment as "clean, bright," and "nice and cool," suggesting a well-maintained and comfortable indoor climate. The interior design is thoughtfully curated with an eclectic mix of original art and stylish furnishings, providing a unique and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. The property's historical background, rumored to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad and later a boarding house for medical students, adds to its distinctive character.
Being centrally located in downtown Louisville, directly across from the Omni Hotel, the house is situated in a vibrant urban setting. While this offers unparalleled access to city life, it also means guests should expect typical city sounds and activity. However, the renovation efforts have included measures to insulate suites from noise, and "white noise" sound machines are provided in each suite to assist light sleepers.
As a multi-unit short-term rental rather than a traditional hotel, the services at Howard Hardy House differ. A key feature is self check-in, typically facilitated via a keypad or access code, offering flexibility for arrival times, as highlighted by one review: "We found it easy to get to." There is no traditional front desk, and housekeeping is provided on a limited basis, usually after check-out, with extra services available for longer stays or large groups.
Each unit within the Howard Hardy House is well-appointed with essential amenities. Guests can expect free wireless internet (Wi-Fi) throughout the property. A significant advantage for guests, especially those traveling with families or for extended stays, is the inclusion of kitchenettes or full kitchens in each suite. These are equipped with refrigerators, ovens, microwaves, coffee/tea makers (often Keurig machines with complimentary pods), and kitchenware, allowing for self-catering. Laundry facilities are generally not available on-site for individual suite rentals, but arrangements for laundry service can sometimes be made for large groups renting the whole house.
In-room amenities include flat-screen TVs (often smart TVs allowing guests to log into their streaming services), air conditioning and heating throughout, and thoughtful details like hair dryers, irons/ironing boards, and the aforementioned white noise machines. The property can accommodate large groups, with the entire house sleeping up to 22 people across its suites, making it suitable for wedding parties, conferences, or large family gatherings. Specific layouts vary by floor, with some suites offering multiple bedrooms and bathrooms.
The Howard Hardy House is also pet-friendly, allowing certain pets with prior permission and a fee. This is a significant advantage for travelers looking for "Hotels Near Of Me" that accommodate their furry friends.
The central downtown location of the Howard Hardy House is its most compelling feature. Guests are within easy walking distance of a multitude of Louisville's key attractions and vibrant districts. This includes the Kentucky International Convention Center, 4th Street Live! (a popular entertainment and nightlife district), Riverfront Park, the Kentucky Center for the Arts, and the KFC Yum! Center arena. Main Street, with its array of bars and restaurants, is also just a short stroll away. Its proximity to these landmarks means guests can maximize their time exploring the city.
While the property itself doesn't have an on-site restaurant or traditional hotel amenities like a pool (though guests can sometimes pay a daily rate to use the pool and other facilities at the nearby Omni Hotel), its self-catering capabilities and central location mean dining options are abundant in the immediate vicinity. The structure's historic nature and meticulous renovation are also a key feature, offering guests a unique lodging experience unlike a standard chain hotel. The option to rent the entire house or individual suites provides significant flexibility for different group sizes and needs.
As the Howard Hardy House operates as a short-term rental, promotional information typically involves booking through platforms like Airbnb or Vrbo, where special offers or discounts might be available for longer stays or off-peak periods. Guests are advised to check these platforms directly for current pricing and availability. The property may also be available for direct booking through its own website, which could offer different rates or terms.
Based on customer reviews, parking is a critical consideration. While the location is excellent, like many downtown properties, parking can be a "typical city downtown parking issue." The property offers two designated parking spaces at the rear of the building, available for loading/unloading and extended use for larger groups. Additionally, metered street parking is available in front of the building, but it is typically not available during rush hour (3 PM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday). For more convenient overnight parking, guests are recommended to use nearby surface lots or garages, such as the YMCA parking lot (one block south at 555 South 2nd Street), which offers daily rates (around $3 for surface, $7 for garage). Guests with larger vehicles should be particularly mindful of potential parking limitations.
Reviews consistently praise the cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. One guest stated, "It's clean, bright, has evrythwwr need, and importantly, it's nice and cool," indicating a comfortable and well-equipped stay. The "easy to get to" and "central location to everywhere we needed to be" comments underscore the convenience for visitors attending events like Forecastle Festival or national conferences. The "self check-in" process also contributes to a smooth arrival. Overall, the Howard Hardy House provides a highly recommended option for those seeking a spacious, well-located, and uniquely charming stay in downtown Louisville, especially for groups or those desiring a more home-like experience.

Jul 14, 2024 · Nancy Campbell - The Grace Under PressureWe stayed here for Forecastle Festival and so far it's been a great experience. We have 2 more nights but we found it easy to get to with a central location to everywhere we needed to be. It's clean, bright, has evrythwwr need, and importantly, it's nice and cool. We'd definitely stay here again!
Oct 24, 2023 · Amy CarbonneauLocation was great, price was good enough!Took my fiance here so we could do a few distilleries. My only recommendation is to turn up the heat when you get there. We stayed in December and it was in the 30's outside, and it was like 65 in our room. I was freezing the whole time until the heaters could heat the whole place, which was on the last day we were there. I understand they need to keep costs down, so it's a minor complaint! Super cool place, I love the old feel of it. There was no front desk or anything like that, you get your codes to get in a day or so before you arrive, which is fine, but I like the feel of bed and breakfast with a front desk and family feel a little more, but this one was not unenjoyable by any means! The codes you have to use to get in make it feel like you're in an escape room situation, but after the first time we got in it was easy! Our stairs to get to our room were a bit daunting as well, but I was fine with them!
Jan 03, 2019 · Kristen Gamelin5 units and everyone is uniquely different. Depending on your needs you should communicate with Key Source Properties prior to booking of your reservation is going to be non-refundable. Justin is EXTREMELY courteous and went out of his way to service our needs. I should have taken pictures when we arrived because the room marvelous. We were expecting a couple things that weren't here but Justin got us taken care to the best of his ability. Our travel basketball club will MOST DEFINITELY reserve this entire space next summer.
Jul 06, 2019 · Coach Tylor Coley*Read my full review, really negative experience* My girlfriend and I stayed in the Howard Hardy home over the 4th of July. The Airbnb suite itself was clean, well appointed and in a fantastic location. However there were two problems I had. The minor of these problems were that the listing stated that they had the essentials for cooking. They had plates and a microwave, other than that there were no essentials. Limited cooking utensils, no stove, no real pots or pans. In addition, it said we would be left with a parking pass. We were not. The major, and I would absolutely say major problem, was that another guest was able to access my Airbnb after I checked in. Thankfully I was inside when this happened, but they were given the code to my Airbnb. I contacted the host through the app, and he called me with an exceptionally rude and condescending tone. He told me not only that this was not at all possible, but that the guests aren't permitted to check in till 3 (when I contacted him was mid-morning). Well, it was possible. It did happen. And it isn't my job to police when people check in. He continued to tell me how this wasn't possible, and offered no solutions to fix it. Hours later he did come down. It's unfortunate that this occurred. The Airbnb itself it very nice and in a great location. But I did not trust Key/Howard Hardy to ensure my belongings were safe. And I certainly did not appreciate the exceptionally rude behavior of their employees over the phone. I would not recommend you staying in this Airbnb, or any Airbnb's that are managed by this company.
