My husband and I spent two nights at the hotel to celebrate our anniversary on July 14-16. The Illinois Beach Hotel is a diamond in the rough. Built on our beautiful lakeshore in the 1940's, it has a unique quality and style. The new management, the same who man Starved Rock Lodge and White Pines, are making strides to bring this hotel up to it's former glory, yet the "to do" list is long and the challenges are great. That being said, a multi-million dollar pool renovation is almost complete (maybe done now), the restaurant serves GREAT breakfast and good dinners. Beds are comfortable and the rooms are clean, but need some updates. Best of all is the friendliness and responsiveness of the staff. We needed a bathroom refresh and had someone respond quickly to our request. The front desk, especially Kelly, seem proud to be taking care of the hotel. And, did I mention the beach? During our weekday stay, the hotel was peaceful and we relaxed in the sunshine both on the deck for breakfast and at the beach. Overall, we had a nice stay for our anniversary.

Jul 27, 2025 · Julie GedgaudI saw some bad reviews about this place but I would disagree. Yes it is a bit tired in places but it's very clean, comfortable with everything you need. I had a twin room with a lake view. clean comfortable bed, good temperature. Staff friendly and polite. The food is good and good value. Right on the beach. It is quiet and the bar and restaurant shuts early. I will go again.
Jul 16, 2025 · Jenny WaltonMy first impression was a that it was once beautiful and an upscale place for weddings , vacations. Sadly, not anymore. The place is just run down. Landscaping is non existent. Which is a shame because the location of the howl is beautiful. The cleanliness of the rooms is subpar. The shower curtain was stained brown at the bottom and tub was as stained and gross. The air vent in the bathroom was covered in accumulated dust. Wash cloths so thin you could see your hand through them. Toilet paper holder broken. The walls were peeling in the bathroom. We ate at Nolan’s restaurant on site for supper and breakfast. Food and drinks were good. Be prepared to pay 33$ a person plus tip for an extremely basic buffet breakfast though. I’ve had better at most chain hotels with the “free” breakfast. On a good note the staff was very nice and accommodating. There just didn’t seem to be enough of them. The maintenance guy had to cover the front desk. He was very nice though. Management needs to do better and maintain their asset. This place has such potential and could be a gorgeous venue/destination spot. I had hoped this would be a place we would come back often. Sadly , we won’t be back.
Jul 19, 2025 · Scott HonigmannVery nice location, but very weird decisions around hotel entrances and infrastructure. No beach towels or mats even though they are located on the beach, no direct exit to the beach, no space to hang out in front of hotel with a view. Outside pool would be nice, but they have only inside one which is closed. Small cheap playground would be awesome as well. To access the trail you have to cross parking and lots of grass. Very weird vibe, this location could be so much better.
Jun 27, 2025 · Yana YantselovskaIt's an older hotel from at least the 60's, maybe even 50's. The rooms are SUPER sparce - nothing fancy. And their cleaning staff needs to do better as the windows in the room were smeared as were the elevator doors. Having said that, the price was super good - about 150 plus tax for 2 king beds and we had a window view of the beautiful beach. Since I don't have a lot of money for a 'real' vacation, this staycation was really nice! And the beach was stunning! It was just a really nice time. All in all, I'm happy with our stay. Lake Michigan is stunning! But it can be dangerous and should, therefore, be respected. There are no lifeguards on duty. Tragically, someone disappeared in the undertow the day we were there, so be aware of the swim warnings and remember that on warning days, even shallow water can be dangerous. Regarding our stay, I would definitely recommend Illinois Beach Hotel and beautiful Lake Michigan! :)
