So first off, this hotel actually looks bad when you drive in, but there are only 2 hotels in town. Both are in bad condition. But this one was the cheapest and reviews were better, so we decided to give it a go. The owner was there and was very accommodating, and even let us see the room first. He said it was his best room and good for our baby. We weren't impressed, but it seemed fairly clean. The decor and lack there of could make a person nauseous tho. We payed cash and the front desk lady, I think his partner, was helpful. It didn't take long tho and I spotted the first roach I had read about in the reviews. Also I felt a bit itchy, but just hoped it was a passing thing. Well fast forward to about 1:30, I am itching like crazy and getting white welts, so my husband and I and our 3 month old baby go out to truck to sleep. The next morning my husband requested a refund. The worker who was super rude and wouldn't even come to the door. He made him talk through the window. He said the rooms are tested for bugs and the itchiness was caused by the detergent. He said the owners took our cash with them so there will be no refund! The room is stinky cheap for a reason. It is not quality at all. Still the owners were nice, but certainly not their worker. He should be fired.

Mountain Empire Motel Introduce

Hello, Tennessee locals! If you're planning a trip to Mountain City, whether for outdoor adventures, visiting family, or simply passing through this scenic corner of our state, finding a place to stay is a key part of your travel planning. In a smaller town like Mountain City, lodging options can be limited, and making an informed choice is essential. This article will provide you with a factual and informative overview of the Mountain Empire Motel, one of the available hotel options in the area, based on publicly available data and recent guest feedback.

As Tennesseans, we appreciate transparency and practical information when it comes to our travel choices. While some hotels excel in luxury, others prioritize affordability and basic amenities. The Mountain Empire Motel falls into the latter category, often being noted as a budget-friendly option in the area. We understand that for many, especially when traveling on a budget or for short stays, finding a simple and convenient place to rest is the primary goal.

It is important to note that public reviews for this property highlight significant and varying experiences. Our aim is to present this information factually, allowing you to weigh the different perspectives. We will cover its location, general services, and what guests have noted as key features, enabling you to make the most informed decision for your stay in Mountain City. Let's delve into what you can expect from the Mountain Empire Motel.

Location and Accessibility

The Mountain Empire Motel is located at 1537 S Shady St, Mountain City, TN 37683, USA. This address places it directly within Mountain City, Tennessee, the county seat of Johnson County, situated in the northeastern corner of the state, nestled in the Appalachian Mountains.

For Tennesseans traveling from other parts of the state, Mountain City is typically accessed via US-421, US-321, or TN-67, often involving scenic drives through mountainous terrain. From larger cities like Johnson City or Bristol, the drive is relatively straightforward, while from Nashville or Knoxville, it would be a longer journey across the state. The motel's location on S Shady Street suggests it's on a main road within the town, offering direct and easy access for those arriving by car.

Being in Mountain City, the motel provides a base for exploring the surrounding natural attractions. The town is known for its proximity to Cherokee National Forest, Roan Mountain State Park, and numerous outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, fishing, and scenic drives. While Mountain City itself is a smaller town, guests would typically find basic services, local eateries, and stores within a short driving distance from the motel. The accessibility directly on a main road, especially for a town with limited lodging options, means it is easy to locate and utilize for a stopover or for exploring the immediate area.

Services Offered

Based on the provided customer reviews, which largely focus on cleanliness and room condition, specific details about official services offered by Mountain Empire Motel are limited. However, we can infer some basic services typically expected of a motel, along with insights from guest experiences:

  • 24-Hour Front Desk (Implied): Reviews mention interacting with staff at check-in and for a refund request, suggesting round-the-clock or at least accessible front desk operations.

  • Room Viewing Option: One guest noted the owner was "very accommodating" and "even let us see the room first," indicating a willingness to show rooms before commitment, which is a valuable service.

  • Payment Options: The motel accepts cash payments, as mentioned by a reviewer who "payed cash." It's likely other payment methods (credit/debit cards) are also accepted.

  • Basic Accommodation: Rooms are provided with beds and a desk (though a chair was noted as broken in one review).

  • Pet-Friendly (Implied/Unconfirmed): While not explicitly stated as a service, budget motels in rural areas sometimes offer pet-friendly rooms. However, given the cleanliness concerns, guests bringing pets would need to confirm directly and carefully.

  • Parking: On-site parking is available for guests.

It is important to note that reviews point to potential issues with in-room amenities (lack of internet, broken chair, tapping refrigerator) and general cleanliness. A "provided breakfast" was mentioned, but described as "halfway stocked and poorly maintained," indicating that if this service is offered, its quality may vary. For comprehensive and accurate information on services, direct contact with the motel is highly recommended.

Features / Highlights

Based on the provided customer reviews, the highlights and features of the Mountain Empire Motel are framed by both positive aspects and significant concerns:

  • Budget-Friendly Pricing: A key highlight for travelers, as noted in reviews, is that it is often the "cheapest" option available in Mountain City. For those on a strict budget, this can be a primary decision factor.

  • Owner/Staff Accommodating at Check-in: Guests praised the owner for being "very accommodating" and allowing them to "see the room first," which is a rare and highly valued service, especially given other concerns. The front desk lady was also described as "helpful" during check-in.

  • Limited Local Competition: As one of only two hotels in town, it offers an option in an area with limited lodging choices, serving as a necessary accommodation for some travelers.

  • Potential for Basic Cleanliness (Varies): One review mentioned the room "seemed fairly clean" initially, and another saying "the rooms were clean" (though this was disputed by another reviewer). This indicates that basic cleanliness might be achieved in some instances, though consistency is a major concern.

Promotions or Special Offers

Given the detailed customer reviews that highlight significant concerns about cleanliness, room conditions, and customer service regarding refunds, information on "promotions or special offers" for the Mountain Empire Motel is not publicly evident or typically associated with properties receiving such feedback. Motels that are primarily positioned as the "cheapest" option in a small market often focus on low everyday pricing rather than promotional campaigns.

It is highly unlikely that the Mountain Empire Motel offers standard promotional rates (like AAA, AARP, or loyalty programs) that larger hotel chains provide. Any pricing would likely be based on their standard daily rates, which are already noted as being at the lower end of the spectrum for the area.

If a traveler were to contact them, the only "special offer" might be a direct quote for a specific room type or length of stay. However, based on the reviews concerning payment handling and refund requests, it would be prudent for any potential guest to clarify all pricing and payment terms very carefully upon booking and arrival.

For comprehensive and reliable information on any potential pricing differences based on dates or length of stay, or to confirm any other financial details, directly contacting the Mountain Empire Motel via phone is the only available channel, though expectations for "promotions" should be low.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For Tennesseans traveling to Mountain City, the Mountain Empire Motel presents itself as a highly specific, budget-focused accommodation option. Its suitability for locals is primarily defined by two key factors: its low price point and its existence as one of only a very limited number of hotels in the immediate area. If your travel to Mountain City is driven by an absolute necessity for the lowest possible cost, and other local options are either unavailable or significantly more expensive, then this motel might be considered.

However, it is crucial for any local considering this motel to be fully aware of the significant concerns raised in multiple public reviews, including reports of cleanliness issues, pest problems (cockroaches, bed bugs/itching), and challenges with customer service regarding refunds. While some guests experienced accommodating owners at check-in, others reported extremely negative interactions and unhygienic conditions.

Ultimately, for Tennesseans, the Mountain Empire Motel may only be suitable if:

  • Budget is the absolute singular priority, outweighing concerns about comfort and cleanliness.

  • Other, potentially more reputable, lodging options in or near Mountain City are fully booked or outside of your budget.

  • You are prepared to thoroughly inspect your room upon arrival (as one review suggested) and potentially seek alternative arrangements if the conditions are not acceptable.

In summary, while it fills a niche as a very inexpensive option in a town with few hotels, potential guests, particularly locals who have other choices, should proceed with extreme caution and manage their expectations based on the widespread negative feedback regarding fundamental aspects of a hotel stay.

BEWARE!!! We had stayed here, and the rooms were terrible. Within 5 minutes of being there we saw a cockroach crawl into one of our drinks. There were many dead roaches laying around, not to mention the plenty of live ones we saw. This is clearly formally a Best Western hotel (or something similar) which had been purchased, and the owners are doing the very minimal at best to do some repairs. We clearly will never stay there again. I read another review saying that the rooms were clean. That review clearly had to be the owner or a family member trying to boost their ratings, the rooms were FAR from clean. Also the pictures on their website are absolutely not representative of how the rooms actually look. If you do choose to stay here, ask to look at the room first....you;ll see what I am talking about!! Never Again!!! A response from the owner is below. My response: I assure you that I do not have the wrong motel. I have attached a picture of your hotel and you can also see the pizza plus . I am not surprised that you do not have a record of my friend and I staying there. When we checked in the gentleman there told us $60 and I watched him put the money in his pocket. There was no cash register, as there was a lot of reconstruction going on, there was hardly even a counter there. So needless to say, there was no formal check in with names, or plate numbers given. In addition my friend has also given you a poor review. If you were so concerned about your poor reviews, why then would it take you 6 months to reply to me? I have the right hotel I am positive!!

I was actually lost in the mountains when I happened across this hotel. Every single employee was so accommodating, and so wonderful. Everybody went completely out of their way to make sure I could get home (I live in NC) and that I had an excellent stay. The staff goes above and beyond, and I cannot reiterate enough how kind everyone is. Highly recommend.

Owner very friendly but obviously struggling to get this motel in decent shape. Obviously this was once a quality motel (by another name) but pretty run down now. Pictures online must be from it's previous life. Needs major work. Holes in walls, live roaches everywhere, dirty microwave, no coffee pot. Will not stay here again!
