Marshall is such a special little town, always enjoy stopping by. This was our first stay in the OM Jail Hotel, it's situated right on the river and is such a peaceful, beautiful spot. The work done on the hotel/jail is top notch with a lot of interesting details and homages to the the building's history. The food in the restaurant downstairs is really great and the folks there are super friendly. On a related note, it was touching to see how much the town had rallied together to recover from the devastating floods there last year.

This article will provide a detailed overview, delving into its unique location, the services and artistic features that define its offerings, and how it might be the ideal fit for your next North Carolina adventure. We’ll provide factual insights from the perspective of a local user, highlighting why this unique establishment is worth discovering.

Location and Accessibility

The Old Marshall Jail Hotel is perfectly situated at 33 Baileys Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753, USA. This prime location places it right on the banks of the French Broad River, offering guests picturesque views and a truly "peaceful, beautiful spot" as described by visitors. Its setting within Marshall, the county seat of Madison County, means guests are directly in the heart of this special little town, providing immediate access to local shops, restaurants, and the town's vibrant community life.

For North Carolina locals, Marshall's accessibility is a key advantage. It's conveniently located just about 20 to 25 minutes north of downtown Asheville, making it an easy drive to enjoy Asheville's larger attractions—like the Biltmore Estate, breweries, and extensive dining options—while returning to the quieter, more intimate setting of Marshall. This proximity allows visitors to experience both the bustling city and the serene mountain town with ease. The hotel's position within downtown Marshall means that local amenities, including "coffee, drinks, food, groceries etc." are "all open nearby," making it very convenient for guests.

The hotel offers parking provided for guest convenience in the front of the building, though it's noted that available parking is not guaranteed and additional public parking is available on Baileys Branch Road and Jerry Plemmons Way. Guests should be aware that the hotel is "accessible by staircase only" as rooms are on the second floor, and there is "no elevator," which is an important consideration for some travelers. However, the ease of walking to local points of interest and the connection to the French Broad River for potential outdoor activities like kayaking or tubing (seasonal) enhance the overall appeal of this location for an immersive local experience.

This place is truly one of a kind, it is almost like staying in an art installation. Our room, Bailey's Branch Suite, had all the comforts of a 5-star room (particularly of note are the super comfy beds and bedding) plus all sorts of unique features that you just have to come check out yourself. Marshall just had their reopening post Hurricane Helene so there is coffee, drinks, food, groceries etc. all open nearby. Plus Zadies at the jail just opened back up for yummy eats, beer and wine. We stayed on a Thursday for the music and dancing on the patio, everyone was in such great spirits, welcoming and appreciative to be there. It was a blast and we will be back soon.

I stayed in the back street bunk room and slept fantastically. Very affordable and what a cool building! The view of the river from the back deck is incredible. I stayed April 2025, and they are still doing repairs to the downstairs from the damage done by Helene, but it didn't cause any issues with my stay whatsoever. Highly highly recommend if you're in the area.

They have re-opened and are working to restore everything. Staff is responsive and open about their renovation process. They provide ear plugs for the nearby train (that doesn’t run due to hurricane damages) and other noise :) 2nd floor is immaculate and by far the coolest place I’ve ever stayed. The shop that used to be downstairs is still rebuilding, not a great walk ability factor. Location was rated slightly lower because the town is still suffering the aftermath of the hurricane and looks somewhat post apocalyptic. After looking up how much damage the town went through it’s a miracle they are open now. Driving through town is an experience in itself. Oh and the Bailey suite has a hidden gem of artifacts found during the remodel and all of the pottery really adds charm that can’t be found anywhere else.

I have stayed here multiple times and cannot say enough good things about my experience. The attention to detail and craftsmanship is remarkable! Down to the Old Marshall Jail” branded homemade soaps, the adorable mason jar of coffee, meaningful bricks, dimmer switches, handcrafted doors and custom window treatments - nothing has been overlooked. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the bath nicely appointed - it’s such a special experience. Not only is Josh an amazing, knowledgeable host, his pottery work in the rooms is a lovely touch. I also love the honor system for t-shirts! Old school at the Old Marshall Jail, and I love everything about it! I’ll be back again and again! Thank you for creating such a one-of-a-kind property.
