This is where the secret cabal that runs the media, world governments, and banks meet every summer. They look innocent, but don't be deceived. The secret meeting is every Friday morning on a certain porch. They call themselves "The Board".😆
Welcome to Pine Knoll Bungalow Colony, a unique lodging option located at 10 Hamilton Rd, Monticello, NY 12701, USA. For local users searching the "Hotels Near Of Me" platform for accommodation, Pine Knoll Bungalow Colony offers a glimpse into a classic Catskills summer experience, though with a distinct historical character. Unlike conventional hotels, bungalow colonies typically provide seasonal, self-contained units, fostering a sense of community and a more relaxed, extended-stay atmosphere.
Pine Knoll Bungalow Colony is situated in Monticello, New York, a town with a rich history as a popular summer retreat in the Catskill Mountains. The environment of a bungalow colony is inherently communal, with individual units clustered around shared recreational areas. The address, 10 Hamilton Rd, places it within this established Catskills landscape.
Historically, bungalow colonies like Pine Knoll were conceived as escapes from the hot, sweltering summer city streets, offering cooler air and a relaxed pace of life upstate. This original intent means the environment is designed for leisurely summer days, with outdoor space and communal facilities. However, customer reviews highlight that the property, like many older colonies, "needs a major overhaul" and significant maintenance. This suggests that while the fundamental natural setting remains, the physical infrastructure might show signs of age and wear. Guests should anticipate a rustic and unpretentious environment rather than a polished, modern resort. The charm often lies in its vintage feel and the communal atmosphere it fosters.
The property is transitioning from a single owner to a mixed model of renters and owners, which might influence its evolving environment and future upkeep. Despite the need for modernization, the essence of a bungalow colony – a collection of small, independent units perfect for summer living – remains. The presence of a pool indicates a central gathering point for recreation within the colony.
The services and features at Pine Knoll Bungalow Colony are geared towards providing a straightforward and traditional bungalow experience, rather than the extensive amenities of a full-service hotel or resort.
The primary feature is the accommodation itself: individual bungalows. These are typically self-catering units, meaning guests would generally be responsible for their own meals and daily living. While specific details on in-bungalow amenities are not provided in the reviews, classic bungalow colonies usually include a basic kitchen, living space, and bedrooms. Given the historical context, guests should not expect features like central air conditioning, as the original appeal was the naturally cooler upstate air before air conditioning became widespread and affordable.
A key communal feature is the swimming pool, described as "decent." This provides a vital recreational outlet, especially during the summer months, serving as a hub for families and individuals within the colony. Beyond the pool, other shared outdoor spaces are likely to be present, typical of a bungalow colony setup, which might include open green areas for relaxation or casual play.
The service model at a bungalow colony is generally less formal than a hotel. Management typically oversees the common areas and may provide basic maintenance for the bungalows. Guests are often part of a self-sufficient community. The nature of bungalows as older, seasonal accommodations suggests that amenities will be functional but not necessarily modern or luxurious. The focus is on providing an affordable base for a summer stay, with opportunities for community interaction.
The experience at Pine Knoll Bungalow Colony is steeped in nostalgia for a bygone era of Catskills summer vacations. It offers a taste of how many families spent their summers decades ago, escaping the city heat for simpler pleasures. The very concept of a "colony" implies a close-knit community atmosphere, where neighbors might interact more than in a typical hotel setting. This communal aspect is a defining characteristic, providing a unique social dynamic that appeals to some visitors.
The humorous customer review about "The Board" – a "secret cabal" meeting on a porch – while clearly a joke, subtly hints at this strong sense of community and the regular gatherings that define life within a bungalow colony. This element of shared experience and neighborly interaction is a core part of its charm.
However, it is crucial to temper expectations regarding modern comforts. The review explicitly states that "most older colonies" need "much maintenance needed to upkeep thier colonies," indicating that guests should prepare for a less polished, more rustic environment. The value proposition here is not modern luxury but rather an authentic, community-focused, and potentially budget-friendly summer retreat. It's about experiencing the tradition of the Catskills bungalow colony.
Pine Knoll Bungalow Colony's appeal on the "Hotels Near Of Me" platform is niche, targeting specific types of travelers. Its primary promotional aspects are its affordability and its historical charm as a traditional Catskills bungalow colony.
The target audience includes:
While there are no explicit "special get away offers" mentioned, the inherent nature of bungalow colonies is to provide an affordable alternative to more luxurious resorts. The transition to mixed ownership/rental might mean that individual bungalows are offered for rent by private owners, which could lead to varied pricing and availability.
For local users searching for accommodations in Monticello, Pine Knoll Bungalow Colony offers a distinctive choice. It is best suited for those who understand and appreciate the rustic charm and communal lifestyle of an older bungalow colony, and who are willing to overlook potential needs for modernization in favor of a unique, traditional Catskills summer experience. It's a place to "hang out" and enjoy the simpler pleasures of summer in upstate New York.

Mar 26, 2025 · Chana KatzThis was a single owner old bungalow colony which was bought by a group of individuals and now there are renters and owners at this location. The place needs a major overhaul as do most older colonies. The pool is decent. Years ago people could not afford air conditioning so they would try to escape the hot sweltering summer city streets by going up north to upstate NY to significantly cooler air at various bungalow colonies.. All this has changed these days because air-conditioning became more affordable and most colonies which were used for only two months a year never got the much maintenance needed to upkeep thier colonies...
