It's a modest hotel that transports you back to 1990. Though there are some modern updates ( such as a surprisingly big 40" Smart TV, coffee maker, and dorm sized fridge), there are many areas for improvement. The paint in the bathroom was cracking and peeling off. Several burn marks on the comforter despite being a non smoking room. A large painting just sitting by tr bathroom sink. Furniture does need updating. Bed firm and comfortable. I do want to note my concerns upon reading other reviews here. There are several reviews speaking about bugs and specifically roaches. I did a full search for bed bugs and roaches (checking all drawers, stripping the bed, checking the microwave, peering under the sink and toilet). I am happy to announce there was no evidence of any bugs. Also, it's somewhat insuling to be asked for a credit card "just in case something breaks" when the room hasn't been updated in years. A fine place for a quick stop to rest. It's close to everything (Lancaster, Harrisburg, Hershey, York, and Gettysburg) and is a stones throw to 83 and the Turnpike. For it's cons, the location, cleanliness, and value more than make up for it.

The Scottish Inns Harrisburg - Hershey South boasts a highly strategic location that is one of its most appealing features. Situated on Commerce Drive in New Cumberland, it offers exceptional proximity to major transportation arteries, including Interstate 83 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76). This makes it an ideal stop for travelers exploring or passing through the region, providing easy and quick access to nearby cities and attractions. Its position is described as "a stone's throw to 83 and the Turnpike," highlighting its convenience for road travelers.
The hotel's name, "Harrisburg - Hershey South," accurately reflects its accessible position relative to these popular destinations. Guests can easily reach Harrisburg, the state capital, with its government buildings, museums, and riverfront activities. Furthermore, it serves as a practical base for visiting attractions in Hershey, renowned for Hersheypark and Hershey's Chocolate World. Beyond these, the location offers reasonable access to other significant Central Pennsylvania areas such as Lancaster (known for Amish Country) and Gettysburg (famous for its historic battlefield). The immediate surroundings are typical of a commercial area near a highway, with various gas stations and fast-food establishments. While not a scenic retreat, its strength lies in its excellent connectivity to a wide range of regional points of interest, making it a functional choice for those prioritizing location and value within the "Hotels Near Of Me" search category.
Scottish Inns Harrisburg - Hershey South provides a range of basic services and amenities intended to offer a functional stay for its guests. The hotel generally offers complimentary Wi-Fi access in rooms and public areas, allowing guests to stay connected. Rooms are air-conditioned, and some units include surprisingly modern updates such as a 40-inch Smart TV, a coffee maker, and a dorm-sized refrigerator. These additions can enhance the comfort and convenience for guests, allowing for personal entertainment and storage of beverages or snacks. Each room is typically equipped with a private bathroom, often featuring a shower/tub combination.
The front desk is available for guest assistance, although specific hours of operation were not consistently detailed across all reviews. Free self-parking is available on-site, a standard and convenient feature for a motel. While some basic amenities are present, as noted in customer reviews, the consistency of these amenities and their condition can vary. For example, some rooms may have a functional coffee maker and fridge, but details like working remotes or phone cords might be inconsistent. The property primarily focuses on providing a place to rest without extensive additional services like a pool or fitness center, aligning with its budget-friendly positioning.
The primary distinguishing feature of Scottish Inns Harrisburg - Hershey South is its value proposition: providing a place to stay at a modest price. Its location is arguably its strongest asset, offering unparalleled convenience for travelers seeking to access Harrisburg, Hershey, Lancaster, York, and Gettysburg quickly via nearby major interstates. The presence of some modern updates within the rooms, such as Smart TVs and refrigerators, stands out as a positive surprise for a hotel in this price bracket, suggesting an effort to enhance the guest experience despite its overall "modest" classification. The hotel's pet-friendly policy, while not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews, is often a feature of Scottish Inns properties, which would appeal to guests traveling with pets.
However, it is crucial to present an objective view, and the consistency of these features and the overall state of the property appear to be significant concerns based on recent customer feedback. While one reviewer found no evidence of bugs after a thorough search, multiple other reviews express serious concerns about cleanliness, maintenance, and overall condition. Issues like cracking and peeling paint in bathrooms, burn marks on comforters in non-smoking rooms, holes in walls exposing insulation, dirty surfaces (crumbs, hair in sinks), non-functional items (remotes without batteries, phones without cords), and clogged drains are repeatedly mentioned. The "wet" feeling in rooms and "concrete-like" beds also indicate potential comfort issues. The disparity between advertised images and the actual room condition is also a notable concern. These issues suggest that while the hotel aims to offer value, its execution of basic maintenance and cleanliness standards can be highly inconsistent, significantly impacting the guest experience and potentially undermining its value proposition.
Scottish Inns Harrisburg - Hershey South, as a budget motel, primarily relies on its low price point and convenient location for promotion. It is likely listed on various online travel agencies (OTAs) and direct booking platforms, appealing to travelers searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" with the most economical options. Promotions might involve simple nightly rate discounts or seasonal offers to attract guests. The emphasis is on providing a straightforward, no-frills place to stay.
Customer feedback for Scottish Inns Harrisburg - Hershey South is starkly divided, presenting a very mixed picture. Positive reviews highlight the hotel's excellent location as a "fine place for a quick stop to rest," emphasizing its proximity to major attractions and highways. Some guests also appreciate the surprisingly modern amenities like the Smart TV and fridge, and a specific review found no evidence of bugs despite prior concerns, which is a significant reassurance for potential guests. The value for money, considering the location and some amenities, is also a positive point for these guests.
Conversely, a substantial portion of the feedback is extremely negative and raises serious concerns. Many guests describe the rooms as "filthy," with pervasive odors of mold/mildew, old cigarettes, and body odor. Specific complaints include dirty walls with holes, hair in sinks, no toilet paper, missing remote batteries, non-functional phones, and clogged, dirty bathtubs without stoppers. Beds are described as "slabs of concrete" and rooms felt "wet." Instances of rude staff, particularly a female desk attendant, who was defensive and unhelpful when confronted with issues, are reported. One guest detailed having to clean the room themselves after their complaints were ignored, and witnessing another couple immediately leave after seeing their room. These negative experiences indicate a significant lack of cleanliness, maintenance, and customer service in many instances. The reviews strongly suggest that while the location might be a benefit, the inconsistent and often poor condition of the rooms and service can severely compromise the guest experience, leading to extreme dissatisfaction and a strong recommendation to avoid the property. This wide disparity in reviews indicates that guest experience at Scottish Inns Harrisburg - Hershey South can be highly unpredictable.

Apr 20, 2025 · Dean DixonWe are from out of state staying here because its my sons birthday and we were going to hershey park. So we didnt know the area and were excited to be on our adventure to hershey park. I felt bad for my son who was so excited and unfortunately got this. But Aside from the one younger guy at the desk when we initially checked in, (he was great,) the other female that helped us was extremely rude. We walked into the room and it smelled soo bad. Like mold/mildew, old cigarettes and Body odor. The room was filthy crumbs and little debris all over the floor, the walls were dirty and had holes everywhere. To the point you could see straight in to the fiberglass installation. The sink had hair in it so obviously it hadn't been cleaned. There was no toilet paper, no batteries in the remote. The phone had no cord so you couldn't even use it. The beds were like slabs of concrete. Everything felt "wet" im assuming moisture from the ac but it was gross. The bathtub had dark marks all over it. There was no stopper in the bath tub but both the bath tub and the sink were clogged water wouldn't go down. This room didn't look anything like the picture whatsoever. I went up to the office and let them know how gross it was and the lady (with tons of hair clips in her hair) was immediately offended gave a snarled look and said she had checked that room herself before we got there. I said that is crazy because there is literal hair in the sink clearly you didn't go into the room. Told her about everything she gave me a roll of tp and 2 batteries. But She got upset and huffed and puffed, about me telling her it was nasty in there. Eventually after a little back and forth she said with an attitude that she would get house keeping to come back i told her ok great but we had reservations and I wanted to make sure we were there when it happened. She told me no they will go in while you are not there. Ok fine. We took all our valuables and left for our reservation. We come back and nothing was done at all so I ended up just buying my own supplies and doing it myself. We were here for my son's birthday and all the money was tied up in the activites otherwise we would have just stayed at another hotel. That same night I witnessed a couple go to the office get there key, find their room, walk in with all their bags for maybe 5 minutes and brought all their bags right back out, dropped off their key and left. These rooms should be shut down. And their listing should be updated to current pictures. I am beyond upset that this is what my son got for his birthday and that I wasted my money on this. Would not recommend to a single person. It's disgusting.
May 19, 2025 · Tara RodriguezGet there, first room we go in has roaches. They did not care and refused to give a refund. DO NOT GO HERE! The rooms are always dirty, and the blankets and curtains always have holes from cigarettes! It’s not worth the cheap price, look elsewhere where.
May 19, 2025 · Samantha EchevarriaI have stayed a few times and each time I have cleaned the room. I like that my sleeping space is tidy. I also like the convenience of the location as it's a few miles from Route 15. The floors were not clean (see photos) and the tub had black hairs in it. The shower curtain poles aren't properly fixed to the wall and the ceiling fans don't work properly. The HVAC unit filters were dirty.
Jan 20, 2025 · Julie StevensIf you like rustic rooms in older motels with lots of charm, this is your place. I probably wouldn't recommend it if you are into more modern amenities, but if you want a nice clean room at an affordable price, this place has it. I was in the Harrisburg area three nights, and I wish I would have spent all three here. I stayed at a motel in Hershey the other two, which was nice, but wasn't unique like this place. There was a free breakfast, coffee, more than you could ask for with the price they charge.
