Rooms are clean and nice. Beds are comfy. It is a little far out of the downtown but that has it's appeal. The hotel was virtually empty when we checked in but they put us in a room that looked out on a walkway. That meant we either had to have the drapes closed or be seen by anyone walking by. We asked for a different room and they very nicely moved us. I'm so glad they did as it would not have been a good stay otherwise. The hot and cold water in our room was a little unpredictable . Hard to get cold water out of the tap and unable to get hot water in shower so both my husband and I had cold or lukewarm showers. There is a restaurant there but it is only open for dinner. That means there is no nearby breakfast option. They sell a few things in the lobby but not much choice. It would be nice if they offered muffins or bagels. Coffee is available in the lobby but it doesn't open until 7:30 a.m. Regardless of these small deficiencies, it is a nice place and I would stay there again.

Skyline Lodge Introduce

For those seeking a distinctive mountain getaway within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category, Skyline Lodge offers a unique blend of mid-century modern architecture, serene natural surroundings, and sophisticated comfort. Located at 470 Skyline Lodge Rd, Highlands, NC 28741, USA, with phone contact at (828) 526-4008 or +1 828-526-4008, this lodge provides a tranquil escape just a short drive from the bustling heart of downtown Highlands.

The environment of Skyline Lodge is one of its most compelling features. Nestled atop Flat Mountain at 3,700 feet, the lodge is surrounded by 50 magnificent acres of old-growth conifers and hardwoods. This elevated position provides a perfect respite from summer heat and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The architecture, originally designed by Arthur Kelsey, a student and friend of Frank Lloyd Wright, gives the lodge a unique mid-century modern aesthetic, characterized by its angular design, use of local stone, chestnut, and hand-cut cedar shakes. The tranquil mill pond at its gate and the sounds of running waterfalls below some balconies further enhance the serene natural ambiance. The property exudes a palpable sense of place, inviting guests to relax and reconnect with nature. While it's slightly outside the immediate downtown area, this separation contributes to its peaceful, pastoral mountain retreat feel, yet still allows quick and easy access to Highlands and Cashiers, where outdoor activities like hiking, exploring waterfalls (such as Bridal Veil Falls and Dry Falls), and foraging for mushrooms and berries abound.

The lodge, originally constructed in 1929 and extensively renovated in 2021, features 40 rooms that blend historic charm with contemporary luxury. Guest rooms are designed for comfort and style, with amenities such as clean and comfortable beds featuring custom-crafted, all-foam mattresses, heated bathroom floors, walk-in showers, bidets, hair dryers, and complimentary high-speed wireless internet (with a speed of 50+ Mbps). Many rooms include private balconies or patios, offering scenic views and, in some cases, the soothing sounds of a nearby waterfall. Smart TVs with Netflix and premium channels, coffee/tea makers (with branded Mozza coffee sachets), in-room safes, and blackout drapes/curtains are standard. While some guests have noted occasional unpredictability with hot and cold water in rooms, the overall feedback on room cleanliness and comfort is positive, with guests praising the staff's responsiveness to such issues. Hypo-allergenic bedding can also be requested. It is important to note that rooms are accessible via exterior corridors and there is no elevator on the property, which guests with mobility concerns should consider. Some lower-level rooms may also look out onto walkways, requiring drapes to be closed for privacy, but the staff is generally accommodating in moving guests to more private rooms upon request, as evidenced by customer reviews.

The services at Skyline Lodge prioritize guest comfort and a personalized experience. The staff is consistently praised for being friendly, attentive, and helpful, often going above and beyond to ensure a pleasant stay. The front desk operates daily from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with an overnight emergency phone number available. Free self-parking is provided on-site at the entrance front drive. The lodge is also notably pet-friendly, welcoming dogs (one dog up to 50 lbs, or two dogs totaling 60 lbs per guestroom) for an extra charge of $125 per stay. Specific pet-friendly rooms are available upon request, and canine visitors receive a "pup cup" welcome beverage, in-room doggie beds, food and water bowls with placemats, and chef-made, in-house dog treats. Dogs are allowed anywhere on the property except indoors at Oak Steakhouse, though they are welcome on the Oak Steakhouse Terrace. While a common point of feedback is the lack of a dedicated breakfast restaurant, the lobby does offer a few items for sale and complimentary coffee is available starting at 7:30 a.m. Guests have suggested that the hotel could enhance breakfast options with more choices like muffins or bagels. Limo/town car service, express check-out, luggage storage, and wedding services are also offered. Daily housekeeping service is by request, with guests needing to notify the front desk the day prior if they desire service.

A key feature of Skyline Lodge is its acclaimed on-site restaurant, Oak Steakhouse. This establishment has garnered phenomenal reviews, being described as an "exceptional" steakhouse with delicious food, excellent service, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. It offers a sophisticated dining experience with a focus on high-quality Certified Angus Beef steaks and other local cuisine, partnering with area purveyors and neighboring farms to bring the authentic flavors of Appalachia to the table. Oak Steakhouse serves dinner nightly (Monday-Thursday, Sunday: 5:00 pm–9:00 pm; Friday, Saturday: 5:00 pm–10:00 pm) and a popular weekend brunch (Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). The bar/lounge within the restaurant offers a stylish space for drinks, with an outdoor terrace providing mountain air, perfect for enjoying beverages "on the rocks and under the stars" while overlooking the stone terrace and listening to the sounds of Big Creek Falls and Laurel Falls below. Butler's Lounge, the central lobby bar, features expansive lounge seating, vaulted ceilings, and two large hand-carved granite fireplaces, offering mid-century favorite cocktails. Beyond dining, the lodge boasts a central courtyard with fire pits, creating a social atmosphere perfect for relaxing under the stars. For events, Skyline Lodge features a significant events pavilion with a 3,000 square-foot event hall, wrap-around terraces, and other venues like Butler's Bar, Big Creek Pavilion, and a Ceremony Lawn, making it suitable for weddings, engagements, and other gatherings up to 100 people. These event spaces come with curated culinary and beverage packages, along with in-house tables, chairs, and place settings. While the lodge does not have a swimming pool, it offers a tranquil setting that encourages relaxation and exploration of the surrounding natural beauty, including nearby hiking trails like Pinky Falls, Whiteside Mountain, and Rangers Fall Trail.

Promotional information for Skyline Lodge emphasizes its renovated status, blending its historic mid-century origins with modern comforts. It is marketed as a destination for romantic getaways, family trips, and a perfect jump-off point for exploring Highlands and its abundant outdoor activities. The lodge has been recognized by publications such as Maxim and Atlanta Magazine for its unique charm and exceptional dining at Oak Steakhouse, highlighting its appeal for discerning travelers and foodies. The focus on the exceptional Oak Steakhouse is a major draw, promoting its "lively steakhouse restaurant experience" and "balcony views and waterfall sounds" from some dining areas. The lodge also offers on-site programming for guests, including whisky pairing classes, outdoor oyster roasts, wine dinners, and guest musicians, as well as local off-site experiences like fly fishing and rock climbing, accessible through a custom webpage and app. Special packages, such as the "Treat Your Dog" offer, which includes a waived pet fee, doggie bed, bowls, and chef-made treats, are available. For those looking for value, prices can vary by season, with September and January typically being the cheapest months. Guests are advised to check current pricing and policies, including pet fees and cancellation terms, directly with the hotel. Overall, Skyline Lodge offers a unique and memorable stay for those seeking a stylish, serene, and culinary-rich experience in the picturesque Highlands, North Carolina.

Absolutely loved our stay. Beautiful views with nice rooms. We were unsure what room we wanted. Marina helped us pick the perfect room!! The steakhouse was phenomenal as well. My husband and I will definitely be coming back. We highly recommend

Nice hotel overall. The views and setting was really nice. We had a great meal at Oak. The only downside is our room was very musty, it had a smell that we couldn't get off ourselves or our clothes even after getting home and washing them. They had an air purifier in the room but it didn't help. For the lodge - my wife booked the reservation, we were on 111 on Friday night. She will e-mail you.

10/10 on everything! We came up for a sister sleepover weekend and were greeted in the room with gluten free snacks and fresh baked goods. The views were so stunning it was hard to believe it was real. Definitely eat at Oak, the onsite restaurant, while you're there. Pro tip: order the chocolate cake for dessert and take it back to your room to enjoy in the morning with coffee. The whole weekend felt like the nostalgia of a summer camp but with adult comforts. They had to drag us out of there kicking and screaming!

Stayed for a wedding this past weekend. The property itself is nice, but as others have said the rooms are dated. We had a problem with our hot water the first night as there was none. They switched us to a different room the next day, but to get hot water in that room you had to run the sink and the shower at the same time- not very environmentally conscious. Also as others have mentioned the butler text service was useless as there was no response. I would rate this hotel 3 not 4 stars.
