The Argus Hotel & Cocktail Lounge Introduce

For those searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" in Albany, NY, The Argus Hotel & Cocktail Lounge, located at 8 Thurlow Terrace, Albany, NY 12203, USA, presents itself as a distinct and historically-minded accommodation option. This establishment aims to offer a unique stay that blends the charm of a historical building with modern amenities, often described as having more of an "AirBnB" feel than a traditional hotel.

The environment of The Argus Hotel & Cocktail Lounge is frequently highlighted for its aesthetic appeal and historical character. Guests have described the "grounds are beautiful," suggesting a well-maintained exterior and possibly charming outdoor spaces that contribute to a pleasant atmosphere. Being a "historical establishment," the interior likely features architectural details and decor that reflect its past, creating a unique ambiance different from contemporary hotels. The overall feeling is intended to be one of charm and comfort, with one guest describing their experience as "nothing short of an incredible experience." The hotel is conveniently located in a "safe neighborhood in downtown Albany," approximately a mile from Albany College and a hospital, making its environment both aesthetically pleasing and strategically situated for various needs. The presence of a "cocktail lounge" further enhances the social environment, offering guests a place to relax and unwind on-site. However, it's worth noting that the "thin walls" are a significant environmental drawback, as reported by guests, leading to considerable noise transfer from neighboring rooms and common areas like stairwells, impacting the tranquility, particularly in early morning hours.

In terms of services, The Argus Hotel & Cocktail Lounge offers a set of amenities designed to facilitate a comfortable stay, albeit with a less traditional hotel service model. Rooms are "nicely appointed with all the amenities (shampoo, soap, towels, hair dryer, etc.) you would need for a 1-2 night stay." A notable service is the "butler kitchen breakfast," which aims to provide a convenient start to the day. However, this is further clarified by guests as a "DIY snack bar" or "continental" breakfast, featuring a selection of bread, bagels, yogurt, fruit, and store-bought pastries, requiring guests to make their own coffee using a Keurig or espresso machine. This self-service approach to breakfast, while convenient for some, has been described as "somewhat disappointing" by others expecting a more traditional continental offering. The staff, when encountered, are consistently praised for being "very personable and friendly," indicating a high level of guest interaction and positive demeanor. However, a significant operational aspect highlighted is the lack of "actual staff in the building" at all times. Guests report difficulty accessing staff using the provided phone numbers and relying on kitchen staff to resolve issues like being locked out of their rooms. This points to a reliance on a more remote management system. The hotel's phone number is (518) 930-4700 and mobile phone +1 518-930-4700.

The features of the rooms at The Argus Hotel & Cocktail Lounge focus on comfort and essential conveniences. The beds are described as "super comfy," which is a crucial element for a good night's sleep. Rooms are reported as "so clean," which is a fundamental expectation for any accommodation. Each room is equipped with necessary amenities for a short stay, such as a hair dryer and toiletries. However, there are some notable features that guests have found challenging. While rooms require a key for entry, the provided door code, which is supposed to unlock both the building and room doors, reportedly "will not work for guest bedroom doors," leading to guests getting locked out. This discrepancy between expectation and reality regarding key access is a significant functional issue. Furthermore, despite the overall cleanliness, one guest found "belongings of a prior guest from February in one of the bedside table drawers," indicating a lapse in thorough cleaning or inspection in certain areas. The thin walls are also a structural feature that impacts the guest experience, leading to noise disturbances from other guests and common areas. While the "butler kitchen" concept is a feature, its DIY nature for breakfast may not align with all guests' expectations of a continental breakfast. The hotel's distinct approach to amenities and services should be noted by potential guests.

In terms of promotional information, The Argus Hotel & Cocktail Lounge would likely emphasize its unique charm, historical setting, and convenient downtown Albany location. Its "cocktail lounge" is a key selling point, offering an on-site amenity for evening relaxation. The positive remarks about comfortable beds and clean rooms from satisfied guests would also be highlighted. For those seeking "Hotels Near Of Me" with character and a sense of local history, The Argus positions itself as an ideal choice. The hotel's strong staff personality is a notable asset, which can be promoted as part of its welcoming environment. However, any promotional material should implicitly or explicitly manage expectations regarding the hotel's operational model, which leans more towards a self-service or AirBnB style, rather than a traditional full-service hotel with 24/7 on-site staff. Transparency about the access system (door codes vs. keys) and the nature of the continental breakfast would be beneficial. While specific loyalty programs or extensive discount campaigns might not be a primary focus for a boutique establishment of this nature, its unique offerings and positive word-of-mouth (despite the operational quirks) contribute to its appeal for a specific type of traveler looking for a distinctive stay in Albany.

Overall an OK place to stay. It's more like an AirBnB than a hotel. Pros: Great location - conveniently located in a safe neighborhood in downtown Albany about a mile from Albany College and the hospital. The room was also nicely appointed with all the amenities (shampoo, soap, towels, hair dryer, etc) you would need for a 1-2 night stay. The cons: 1. The walls are really, really thin. We booked a first-floor room not knowing it would be right next the the stairwell. We could hear footsteps of other guests dragging their luggage down the stairs from as early as 4am in the morning. 2. The hotel rooms require a key to unlock it. The door code (which, according to the email, was supposed to unlock both the door to the building and the door to our room), will not work for guest bedroom doors. 3. There is no actual staff in the building. We got locked out of our bedroom as we didn't know about the key. One of the kitchen staff had to come unlock our door for us. You also cannot actually access staff using the number provided on the email or website. 4. Our bedroom drawers were not thoroughly cleaned out. We found the belongings of a prior guest from February in one of the bedside table drawers. 5. "Continental" breakfast was somewhat disappointing. It was essentially a DIY snack bar with a selection of bread, bagels, yogurt, and spreads in the fridge, some fruit, and store-bought pastries set out on the kitchen table. You will need to make your own coffee, either via Keurig or an espresso machine.

Far more interesting than typical hotels, lists of characters, nearby is a small lake and park with lots of green. Walking distance to the downtown. All great, one bad was the neighbor who lives in the basement was very loud, talking on phone all the time , his dog barked often

I recently had the Argus host my 70th birthday bash and it was amazing! The venue (intimate dinner for 12 in the conference room) was beautiful and cozy, the lounge is lovely and the staff worked tirelessly to create an experience we will all remember. The food was outstanding and everyone who attended will be back!

Lovely little hideaway for some R&R. Excellent location for walking to good restaurants and downtown. Enjoyed the rooms and self serve breakfast. Excellent historic building with a wonderful atmosphere. Wanted to stay here after enjoying the cocktail bar a few months ago! Glad we did!
