The studio was just what we needed for a great night in Kennett Square. It was cozy and clean and crammed with books! We loved the decor and the thoughtful touches like tea bags from a local vendor. The downtown location can’t be beat. We want to make a special note of the extra effort from staff when my husband accidentally left his favorite walking shoes. We were notified quickly (too late to turn around and get them, unfortunately), and the staff agreed to ship them to us!

Located at 130 S Union St, Kennett Square, PA 19348, USA, this boutique hotel is not just a place to sleep, but a haven for book lovers and anyone looking for a cozy, inspiring, and centrally located retreat. You can reach The Bookhouse Hotel at (610) 257-7008 or via mobile at +1 610-257-7008.
The environment of The Bookhouse Hotel is its most defining characteristic. Nestled in the heart of downtown Kennett Square, this small, four-room hotel is a true literary escape. It is housed within a historic building that once served as a rare bookstore, and even earlier, as a barbershop and ceramic shop. The current owners have lovingly embraced this history, creating an ambiance where "magic comes alive within the walls." Each of the four individually decorated rooms, as well as the common areas, are crammed with an impressive collection of over 5,000 books – not just decorative old volumes, but fresh, appealing titles that invite guests to peruse and add to their "want to read" lists. The decor is thoughtfully curated, blending vintage finds with comfortable furnishings, creating a cozy and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. The central downtown location is unbeatable; guests can easily walk to local restaurants, charming shops, and various entertainment options. Beyond the immediate downtown, Kennett Square itself is known as the "Mushroom Capital of the World" and is surrounded by picturesque rolling hills and lush gardens. The hotel's proximity to world-renowned attractions like Longwood Gardens (just a 5-minute drive away) further enhances its appeal, offering a serene blend of cultural exploration and natural beauty. While the hotel is centrally located, some guests have noted that due to its position on a busy street, traffic noise can occasionally be heard.
The services at The Bookhouse Hotel are designed to provide a comfortable and independent stay, highlighted by its innovative "invisible concierge" self-check-in process. Guests receive detailed access instructions, including a secret code for their room and the lobby, via email or text 24 hours prior to arrival. This allows for seamless and flexible check-ins, even at unconventional hours (check-in is typically from 3 PM, and check-out is by 11 AM). While there isn't a traditional front desk with constant on-site staff, the customer service is highly responsive; guests can text questions and receive quick replies, ensuring assistance is readily available without being intrusive. Complimentary wireless internet access is provided throughout the hotel and in all rooms. Housekeeping services are available on request, allowing guests to choose their preferred level of privacy. For guests arriving by car, free self-parking is available on-site (first-come, first-served with 3 spots), with additional public parking across the street and ample street parking nearby. The hotel does not include breakfast as part of the stay, encouraging guests to explore the town and support local coffee shops and restaurants, which are just a short walk away. For larger groups or special occasions like book clubs or wedding blocks, the entire hotel (sleeping up to 11 guests) can be rented out, and staff are available to assist with such arrangements. The hotel also demonstrates exceptional guest care, as evidenced by a review where staff went the "extra effort" to ship forgotten walking shoes back to a guest. Contactless check-in and check-out are standard, enhancing the guest experience.
The features of The Bookhouse Hotel are meticulously chosen to enhance the book-themed experience and ensure guest comfort. Each of the four rooms – including the Classic Room, Classic Studio, Romantic Suite (1 King Bed with Sofa bed), and Deluxe Suite (2 Bedrooms) – is individually furnished and decorated. These rooms bear whimsical names like “Secret Garden” and “Writer’s Den,” adding to the unique charm. All rooms are equipped with comfortable memory foam beds featuring down comforters, ensuring a restful night's sleep. Guests can enjoy a 55-inch Smart TV with digital channels and streaming services, providing entertainment options. A small kitchenette area in each room includes a bar sink, mini-fridge, microwave, tea kettle, and a Keurig coffee maker. Notably, the hotel provides local delights like Mrs. Robinson's Tea and Horn & Hardart coffee, adding a thoughtful touch. Private bathrooms in each room are well-appointed with hair dryers, slippers, and toiletries. Blackout drapes/curtains and climate-controlled air conditioning and heating further contribute to a comfortable stay. The "book theme" is not just superficial; guests are welcome to read as many books as they desire during their stay, and can even purchase books to be delivered to their homes. The hotel also provides a guestbook in the lobby with recommendations for dining, shopping, and other activities in Kennett Square. While the hotel does not have an elevator (upper floors are accessible by stairs only, with about 5 steps to reach the entrance), its charm and unique concept set it apart. The rooms are designed to be noise-free, though street noise can occasionally be heard.
Regarding promotional information, The Bookhouse Hotel offers unique packages and benefits, often leveraging its connection to local attractions and its literary theme. May 15, 2025 · J BecI spent two nights here and couldn't be happier. I felt immediately comfortable in the room; cozy bed, beautiful and thoughtful interior decor. A place you can really "unplug". The book theme is fun; no musty old books used just for decor. The books are all fresh and appealing and you can add to your list of "want to read" just by perusing the shelves. It's a great location for so many nearby places to visit. I enjoyed being in town and walking to local restaurants, and shops. Unlike other self-check in locations I have stayed in where once you're there you're on your own, baby....the customer service here is great; not intrusive but just enough contact that you know an actual human being is quickly available. I texted question and got a response within minutes. Finally, for having a decent, actually really good, brand of tea available along with the expected coffee set up. (I know this may seem like a small thing to mention, but to a tea lover this made morning so much more enjoyable.) Thank you Stephanie and the Book House Hotel staff.
May 16, 2025 · Pamela RosenblumA Cozy, Book-Lover’s Paradise in Pennsylvania The Bookhouse Hotel in Pennsylvania is an absolute treasure—perfect for anyone who loves literature, quiet charm, and thoughtful hospitality. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere filled with shelves of books in every corner. The hotel beautifully blends the character of a boutique stay with the comfort and convenience of a modern retreat. Each room is uniquely decorated, immaculately clean, and stocked with all the essentials—cozy bedding, a modern bathroom, great lighting, a coffee station, and of course, a curated selection of books. It’s clear that every detail was designed with comfort and creativity in mind. Whether you’re visiting for a relaxing weekend or a quiet work trip, the environment here is perfect for both. The communal spaces are a highlight. The shared library/lounge areas offer a peaceful space to read, reflect, or chat with fellow guests. It’s like staying in a private literary retreat. Plus, the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful—always making sure guests feel welcome and well taken care of. The location is convenient for exploring the local area, but honestly, it’s tempting just to stay inside and get lost in a good book. The Bookhouse Hotel has that rare quality of feeling both like a getaway and a home at the same time. Whether you’re a lifelong reader or simply looking for a quiet, beautifully maintained place to stay in PA, I can’t recommend The Bookhouse Hotel enough. A truly special experience.
May 01, 2025 · Vladislav ZborovskiyWe loved our stay at the Bookhouse Hotel. It was the perfect location for our girls getaway - truly the best place to curl up with a book. We appreciated all the attentions to detail; it made our trip memorable. We were a bit surprised by how loud the traffic was from our room - thankfully they had sound machines to block out the noise. Already dreaming of our next visit!!
May 14, 2025 · Allison DetloffThe Bookhouse Hotel was exactly like it says in their description and more. Also this little town and Kennett Square is very wonderful & we will be back again for a visit. This was a Birthday surprise for our 19 yr old that just finished her first year of College & who also loves reading & books since she was able to pick her first book up & read on her own. Very clean, cozy, and decorated beautifully.
