Wow. We were really looking forward to finally getting a chance to stay at the Fitzpatrick. However, for us there were several surprises. Upon entering the lobby I thought we were coming into a day care center, there were several moms and there children of different ages and volumes behind the registration desk. Kind of a spoiler for the old time elegance of the hotel. We were pleasantly surprised that our room was upgrade to the suite. We enjoyed the large elegant room. The bathroom was what you would expect from the era but for us, we couldn’t really use the shower as you had to step over and into deep claw foot tub with no safety aids. We are an older couple so that didn’t work well for us. I had hoped that this current owner had restored the wood work and revamped the carpets. Not so. Also a concern was their elevator inspection was almost 6 month’s out of date. Having been stuck in the past this was sort of scary. I am glad we finally stayed here but most likely will not return.

The Fitzpatrick Hotel Introduce

For us Georgians, especially those who appreciate history and unique experiences, a visit to a charming historic town like Washington, GA, offers a delightful escape from the everyday. And at the heart of this historic gem stands The Fitzpatrick Hotel, a beautifully restored landmark that promises a journey back in time, combined with modern comforts. It’s more than just a place to stay; it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich heritage of our state.

The Fitzpatrick Hotel, originally built in 1898, is a fully restored historic hotel that aims to transport guests to another era while providing contemporary amenities. Situated on the Downtown Square, it's often referred to as the "Crown Jewel" of Washington, Georgia, and has even received historic preservation awards. The hotel boasts 17 uniquely appointed guest rooms, each individually furnished and decorated to reflect its Victorian heritage, yet equipped with modern conveniences. While the aim is to blend elegance with comfort, some guests have noted aspects of the historic building, such as clawfoot tubs without modern safety aids, which might present accessibility challenges for older guests. Also, some reviews have pointed out areas needing maintenance, like carpeting in hallways and general repairs, along with concerns about elevator inspection dates. Despite these points, the hotel strives to offer a distinctive stay that goes beyond the typical chain hotel experience, making it a popular choice for those seeking something truly different and steeped in local history.

The Fitzpatrick Hotel enjoys a truly central and picturesque location at 16 W Square, Washington, GA 30673, USA. This means you are literally on the Downtown Square of Historic Washington, Georgia. This prime position offers immediate access to the town's charming atmosphere and many of its key historical sites. You are within a short walk of places like the Robert Toombs House and the Washington-Wilkes Historical Museum, allowing for easy exploration of the rich local history. The Mary Willis Library, the oldest public library in the state, is also nearby. For those driving, the hotel provides free self-parking on-site, a valuable amenity for easy access to your vehicle. While Washington is a smaller town, its location is conveniently less than an hour from larger cities like Augusta and Athens, and also relatively close to Madison and Greensboro, home of Reynolds Plantation on Lake Oconee. This makes The Fitzpatrick Hotel an ideal base for exploring not just Washington, but also the surrounding rural beauty and historical sites of Wilkes County and beyond.

The Fitzpatrick Hotel offers a range of services and amenities designed to provide a comfortable and unique stay, blending historic charm with modern convenience:

  • Complimentary Continental Breakfast: Enjoy a free daily continental breakfast, typically available on weekdays, to start your day.
  • Free Wi-Fi & Wired Internet Access: Stay connected with complimentary internet access in both guest rooms and public areas.
  • On-site Restaurant & Bar: Maddy's Public House is located within the hotel, offering Irish cuisine, happy hour, and light fare, providing a convenient dining option.
  • Full-Service Spa (Glo Spa & Boutique): Indulge in pampering treatments and relaxation at the hotel's on-site spa.
  • Fitness Center: A gym is available for guests to maintain their fitness routines.
  • Free Self-Parking: Convenient on-site parking is provided at no additional charge.
  • Meeting Facilities & Ballroom: The hotel features a meeting room and a grand ballroom with pressed tin ceilings and a large balcony, suitable for various events, including weddings and corporate parties.
  • Dry Cleaning/Laundry Services: Available for guest convenience.
  • 24-Hour Front Desk: While some reviews mention staff availability, the hotel generally aims to have a front desk for guest assistance.
  • Newspapers in Lobby: Complimentary newspapers are available for guests.
  • Coffee/Tea in Common Areas: Enjoy hot beverages in the lobby.
  • Wedding Services: The hotel offers services for special events, including weddings.
  • Nightly Turndown Service: Provides an extra touch of luxury (housekeeping offered on request).
  • Vending Machine: For quick access to snacks and beverages.

The Fitzpatrick Hotel boasts several distinctive features and highlights that contribute to its unique appeal, though some aspects also require consideration based on guest experiences:

  • Historic Charm & Unique Decor: The hotel is celebrated for its "classic architecture" and "individually furnished and decorated" rooms that evoke a "Victorian period furniture" feel. Each of the 17 rooms has "unique quirks and details," offering a departure from generic chain hotels.
  • Central Downtown Square Location: Its position "on the Downtown Square" provides an unparalleled advantage for exploring historic Washington on foot, with attractions, museums, and local shops just steps away.
  • On-site Dining at Maddy's Public House: The convenience of having an Irish pub within the hotel means guests don't have to venture far for a meal or a drink, adding to the overall experience.
  • Full-Service Spa: The presence of Glo Spa & Boutique on-site offers a luxurious amenity for relaxation and pampering, a standout feature for a hotel of its size and location.
  • Grand Ballroom & Event Spaces: The beautifully restored ballroom and other gathering spaces, including a charming rear courtyard, make the hotel a popular venue for weddings, corporate events, and family reunions, as noted by its own descriptions.
  • In-Room Fireplaces (in some rooms): Several rooms feature working fireplaces, adding a cozy and romantic ambiance, particularly appealing during cooler months.
  • Complimentary Breakfast: A valued amenity, offering a convenient start to the day.

However, it is important to acknowledge areas of concern raised by recent customer reviews:

  • Maintenance and Upkeep: Guests have specifically mentioned a need for "new carpeting in hallways," general "repair/maintenance of toilet/sinks," and visible "deterioration" on the exterior sign. This suggests that while restoration has occurred, ongoing maintenance might be lacking in some areas.
  • Bathroom Accessibility (Clawfoot Tubs): For guests with mobility concerns, the "deep claw foot tub with no safety aids" can pose a significant challenge for showering, making some bathrooms less practical.
  • Elevator Safety Concerns: A review noted an "elevator inspection was almost 6 month’s out of date," which is a serious safety concern for any guest.
  • Lobby Atmosphere: One guest found the lobby's atmosphere to be akin to a "day care center" due to the presence and volume of children, which "spoiler for the old time elegance," indicating a potential mismatch between the hotel's intended ambiance and the actual guest experience in public areas at times.
  • Lack of In-Room Instructions: A minor but recurring point was the absence of "TV Instructions in rooms."

As a unique, independent historic hotel, The Fitzpatrick Hotel's promotions may differ from large chain properties. While specific, widely advertised discounts might not always be abundant, it's always recommended to check their official website or contact them directly for current offers. Based on general practices for such establishments, potential promotions or ways to save could include:

  • Direct Booking Specials: Sometimes, booking directly through the hotel's website can offer exclusive rates or added perks not available on third-party sites.
  • Seasonal Packages: The hotel might offer special packages tied to local events, holidays, or seasons, such as a "Historic Washington Getaway" package or a romantic escape.
  • Extended Stay Discounts: For guests planning to stay for multiple nights, there might be reduced rates.
  • Event or Wedding Group Rates: If you're attending or hosting an event at the hotel, group discounts for accommodations are often available.
  • Spa Packages: Bundled deals that combine a stay with treatments at Glo Spa & Boutique could be offered.

Given the historic nature of the property and its unique offerings, it's worth inquiring about any special experiences or packages that might enhance your visit to Washington, GA.

4-15-24: Being a victim of A.D.D. and loving it it has given me sharp attention to detail. The hotel is not the Ritz and that's not why you go there. You go there for a deep appreciation for old world charm and woodworking that only old time craftmanship can deliver. The bed in room 208 was comfortable and the room charming. In olden days the window over the door would open to let out hot air (no AC back then) and the claw tub romantic. Time for detail, smoke alarm beeping, faucet handles loose, rooms are scantily furnished (could use a second night stand) and its been a while since the renovation so its time for some TLC. With that being said I would definitely go back and stay for more then one night, maybe dress my wife in a turn of the century night gown and chase her down the hall. Just kidding, Its still the off season but the porch would have been really cool to hang out on with the lights and a glass of wine. Suggestions, owner needs to do some up keeping (not the people who run it) maybe make a deal with a local place to provide breakfast? 24 hour staff? I didn't see anyone and is it possible to exchange free room for 24 hour desk service? With that said I will definitely come back to try out those corner rooms and see if the change I put on the dresser stacks itself again. sincerely the amateur hotel critic.

We stayed here twice this month and it's a lovely hotel with friendly, helpful employees. Beautiful, historic, clean, nice place to stay! We'll be back! Oh, and loved Duffy's Public House. Unique & delicious.

Great historic hotel in the heart of a charming town. Great shops and restaurants within walking distance. Only issue, AC could use some help. We understand it is often expensive and difficult to up fit historic buildings with modern conveniences, so we dealt with it. But the AC system could be upgraded.
