It felt like a blast into the past when you walk in and right up to your room! The lobby is gorgeous with friendly staff, the history behind the building is intriguing, the room entry door is historic with a separate service door in it, radiators for heat, and the room comes with a kitchen. Some of the locals are very fond of the hotel despite never having stayed inside (yet). There is limited paid parking with in-out access is available onsite as well, but everything is within walking distance or within talking the free public transport. Plenty of local restaurants and one inside the building, but if you plan to cook in your room, you may need to dust/ clean off the cookware. The bed and pillows were surprisingly comfortable! Coming from major brand hotels and living in modern houses, the lack of a thermostat was making me bug out for a moment, but I found the radiator valve to turn the heat on (don’t open it fully unless you want a sauna). A few things to pack though… An eye mask as the blinds are more just for privacy, and Ear plugs as you can easily hear an outside conversation a few floors up and in case large rain droplets hit the window AC unit all night. It’s a quiet hotel and area otherwise.

Adding to its appeal is the beloved on-site restaurant, The Knick, which serves up delicious meals and is a favorite among both guests and locals. What truly sets this hotel apart, however, is its incredible staff, who go above and beyond to make every guest feel genuinely welcomed and valued. In this article, we'll explore what makes The Knickerbocker on the Lake such a special choice, detailing its prime location, the array of services it offers, its distinctive features, and why it's a particularly suitable option for those of us who call Wisconsin home.

The Knickerbocker on the Lake is wonderfully situated at 1028 E Juneau Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53202, USA. This address places it in a highly desirable and picturesque part of downtown Milwaukee, particularly known for being "safe, clean and convenient." It's nestled in a charming neighborhood that blends residential tranquility with easy access to the city's vibrant attractions.

One of its most significant advantages is its proximity to Lake Michigan, allowing for leisurely walks along the waterfront and offering some rooms with beautiful lake views. The hotel is just a "4-minute walk from the Lake Michigan waterfront" and within "8 min walk" to the iconic Milwaukee Art Museum. Other notable attractions within easy walking distance include Veteran's Park (a 5-minute walk) and Cathedral Square. For those looking to explore further, the hotel is also "two blocks to the HOP streetcar," which is Milwaukee's free public transportation option, making it incredibly easy to reach other downtown destinations like the Fiserv Forum (about an 18-minute walk or a short HOP ride), the Henry W. Maier Festival Park (Summerfest grounds, about a 14-minute walk), and the lively Brady Street and Third Ward neighborhoods (a bit further but still accessible via transit or a longer walk). Limited paid parking with in-and-out access is available on-site for a surcharge (typically around $20 per night), providing convenience for those traveling by car. This prime location truly allows you to immerse yourself in Milwaukee's charm and natural beauty without excessive travel.

  • Air Conditioning & Radiator Heat: Rooms are equipped with both air conditioning units (noted by a guest to be near windows) and historic radiators for heat, allowing temperature control.

The Knickerbocker on the Lake is rich in distinctive features and highlights that set it apart, offering a truly unique "old school" charm in Milwaukee:

  • Historic Charm and Intriguing History: The hotel offers a genuine "blast into the past" experience. Housed in a beautiful building with a rich history, its "gorgeous lobby," original "historic" room entry doors (including the charming separate service door that milkmen once used), and working radiators all contribute to its classic ambiance.
  • Exceptional Customer Experience with Staff: This is a consistent and resounding highlight. Guests universally praise the "A+" culture of the staff, from front desk (like Precious) to maintenance and cleaning, noting their genuine happiness and desire to make guests feel welcomed and want to return. This level of personalized service is a true gem.
  • Apartment-Style Living: The availability of spacious suites with "full kitchen" (including dishwasher, oven, stovetop, microwave, refrigerator) is a significant draw, especially for longer stays or for families who prefer to cook. This provides a more home-like and cost-effective lodging option.
  • The Knick Restaurant: This on-site restaurant is not just convenient but is a "favorite restaurant" for many, offering "incredible food & views" and an "upscale dining experience" with an outdoor patio overlooking Lake Michigan. It's a local hotspot that guests can easily access.
  • Prime East Side Location: Nestled in a "safe, clean and convenient" area of downtown, it offers excellent walkability to Lake Michigan, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the HOP streetcar for broader city exploration.
  • Comfortable Amenities in a Historic Setting: Despite being an older building, guests report comfortable beds and pillows. While some aspects like blinds for privacy or potential noise from AC units or radiators might require minor adjustments (like packing an eye mask or earplugs), the overall comfort is appreciated.
  • Full-Service Salon & Spa: The inclusion of The Knick Salon & Spa on-site adds a layer of luxury and convenience, allowing guests to indulge in pampering treatments without leaving the hotel.
  • Community Connection: The fact that "locals are very fond of the hotel despite never having stayed inside (yet)" speaks volumes about its positive reputation within the Milwaukee community.

This place was such a great historic hotel. Love the old style doors on each room where the milkman would open on the exterior to place milk for someone on the inside to retrieve it without opening up the large entrance door. The rooms were nice, suite with kitchen was great to have. Real winner.... was the staff. From Precious at the front desk to maintenance bringing up a fan for me to the cleaning crew the next morning, the culture there is A+. They all were smiling, happy and said their goal is to make you just want to come back. They made you feel like they were really happy YOU were there. Customer experience with staff was 100%

Staying at this hotel was like stepping into a Time Machine in the best way possible! I was absolutely enamored with the design of the whole hotel, and especially the antique doors to all the bedrooms. As some others have mentioned, the smell of the lobby is INCREDIBLE! Everyone we spoke with before and during our stay was super delightful and helpful! My only complaint would be the AC unit in our room wasn’t working properly, so the room stayed kinda muggy, but we made do. I also wish parking was complimentary or at least made clear ahead of time that it must be paid for. I must have misunderstood the website because I was under the impression that the parking was included in the cost of the room and that you wouldn’t have to pay an additional fee to use their lot. However, both of those were smaller inconveniences in the grand scheme of our trip. We really enjoyed this hotel and look forward to the next time we’re in town so we can stay with them again!

As soon as you walk in it smells fantastic! Such a beautiful, classic look. Friendly front desk. The water pressure and temperature - chef’s kiss 🤌🏼 I was in room 420, adorable room with a window AC and radiator for heat (which I love). My room was facing the back. I could hear people talking, car alarms going off, and the dumpster being opened and closed half the night. Other than that- nice visit.

Our stay at The Knickerbocker was wonderful. I'm an out of town musician, so the proximity to Shank Hall for my gig was ideal. We got to the hotel 2 hours before check in and Precious behind the front desk was so accommodating and sweet! She guided us through all the steps to check in with ease. Our room was very nice and comfortable, and even had a full kitchenette! When we went down to go to the restaurant, which was delicious, Precious personally escorted us to make sure we found it ok. We couldn't have been more pleased with our stay and hope to come visit Precious, and the Knickerbocker again soon!
