The Rafters Introduce

For those searching within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category but desiring a truly distinctive and immersive natural experience rather than a conventional hotel stay, The Rafters in South Londonderry, VT 05155, USA, stands out as a remarkable option. It's not a typical hotel, but a "wilderness living training center" that has evolved from a former dairy farm into a cherished retreat for families and groups seeking seclusion and connection with nature.

Environment and Location:

The Rafters is nestled in South Londonderry, Vermont, a region renowned for its pristine natural beauty and tranquil landscapes. The property itself is situated on the site of a former dairy farm, spanning ninety acres, which provides a rich, expansive environment for guests to explore. This allows for a truly secluded experience, where the sounds of nature, like a "babbling brook," are primary. Guests can expect to see local wildlife, including deer, turkeys, and even the "occasional bear," adding to the authentic wilderness feel. The ample woods surrounding the property are perfect for hiking and biking, offering countless opportunities to immerse oneself in the Vermont outdoors. In the fall, the area is particularly spectacular, boasting "some of the most spectacular foliage" on Oak Hill, alongside "century-old apple trees with an abundance of apples." Winter transforms the landscape into a snowy playground, ideal for sledding and snowshoeing on the property's trails. The close proximity to major ski areas like Stratton and Bromley (within 15 minutes) makes it an excellent base for winter sports enthusiasts. In spring, guests can even participate in the family maple operation, and maple syrup is available for purchase year-round. Summer offers access to nearby Jamaica State Park, Gale Meadows Reservoir, and Lowell Lake, as well as hiking at Ball Mountain Dam and Hamilton Falls. The overall environment of The Rafters is one of rustic charm, natural abundance, and peaceful solitude, ideal for those looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature.

Accommodation and Features:

The Rafters, often described as a barn converted into a lodge, offers a unique "pseudo-camping" experience with a blend of rustic charm and essential modern comforts. It is specifically designed to accommodate large groups, ranging from 8 to 20 people, and has even hosted "large youth groups, families and even the occasional wedding party." The main accommodation typically includes one open bedroom downstairs and a loft bedroom upstairs. Both rooms are equipped with mattresses and covers, though guests are required to "bring sheets and blankets or sleeping bags." This setup fosters a communal and adventurous sleeping arrangement. For cooking, guests have the option of preparing meals "inside over the wood kitchen stove or outside over open flame," embracing a more traditional, hands-on approach to wilderness living. A significant recent upgrade mentioned by guests is the addition of a "real flush toilet" and a "wonderful outdoor shower," which greatly enhance the comfort without detracting from the rustic feel. The property also features a fully equipped kitchen with dishes, cookware, and utensils, as well as a gathering space that includes a smart TV with Direct TV and internet access (though internet can be spotty). USB ports and outlets are integrated into end tables for convenience. Guests are encouraged to "bring your own games" to enhance the communal experience. The Rafters is also noted as being pet-friendly, making it a viable option for those traveling with their furry companions. An outdoor wood-boiler provides central heating, with firewood supplied by the owners, though guests typically help with filling it. The inclusion of a working sugarhouse and sawmill on the 90-acre farm adds to the unique, authentic Vermont experience.

Services and Amenities:

While The Rafters is not a full-service hotel, it provides key amenities and services that cater to its unique offering as a wilderness retreat. Guests benefit from "free driveway parking on premises." The property is "pet-friendly," which is a significant advantage for many travelers. Basic kitchen amenities are provided, including dishes, cookware, and utensils, facilitating self-catering. Guests have access to the extensive 90-acre farm, complete with hiking and snowshoe trails, and a "stocked brook with picturesque waterfalls." The presence of a working sugarhouse means guests might even be able to "help us gather sap as part of our family maple operation" during the spring, and maple syrup is available for purchase. The recent upgrades, such as the indoor half-bath and outdoor shower, significantly improve guest comfort. While there isn't a dedicated concierge or daily housekeeping, the "new ownership" is described as "the same great family we've always loved to work with," indicating a personal and helpful approach to guest service. The focus is on providing a self-sufficient, immersive experience rather than traditional hotel services. Guests are responsible for bringing their own bedding, towels, and toiletries, reinforcing the "pseudo-camping" ethos. The check-in process is noted as "exceptional," with guests receiving a 5-star rating for their experience. The property is designed for family and group enjoyment, offering ample space and amenities like a barbecue grill for outdoor cooking and a private back garden. While there is no swimming pool, the surrounding natural bodies of water provide alternatives for aquatic activities. The Rafters also emphasizes its "child-friendly" nature, making it an ideal spot for family reunions and group getaways.

Promotional Information and Special Considerations:

The Rafters is often promoted as the perfect secluded escape for large groups and families looking to reconnect with nature and each other. Its long-standing history (40+ years of family stays) and the personal connection of guests, with some even having their parents married on the property, speak volumes about its unique appeal and memorable experiences. The reviews highlight its ability to make guests "feel secluded in nature, with loved ones." The recent updates under new ownership, such as the indoor toilet and outdoor shower, are positively received, balancing the rustic charm with increased comfort. Promotional details emphasize the flexible capacity, able to accommodate "up to 20 people," and even more if guests opt for camping on the grounds. The pricing and minimum stay policies, like a one-night minimum stay, offer flexibility for planning. It's crucial for prospective guests to understand that this is a rustic experience, not a luxury hotel. The expectation is that guests will embrace the "wilderness living" aspect, including tending to the wood boiler for heat. Despite its rustic nature, it is highly rated for location and cleanliness. The Rafters is a unique offering within the "Hotels Near Of Me" search, catering specifically to those who prioritize a deep connection with the outdoors, communal experiences, and a sense of timeless tradition over conventional hotel amenities. Its pet-friendly policy further broadens its appeal to a wider range of travelers seeking an authentic Vermont retreat.

My family has been staying here almost every year for 40+ years. My parents got married here, by the babbling brook in the late 70's. Every year we return for the psuedo-camping feel. The Rafters has always billed itself as a wilderness living training center. On the site of a former dairy farm you can see where the cows used to roam. Watch for deer, turkeys and even the occasional bear. Cook inside over the wood kitchen stove or outside over open flame. There's a loft for sleeping, bring your own games. Lots of woods for hiking or maybe biking. We go back late September, so don't take our weekend! Now under new ownership, but still the same great family we've always loved to work with. Getting some great updates thanks to the new owners, but it'll always be my favorite VT retreat. Now it even has a real flush toilet, and a wonderful outdoor shower.

I have been going to this place for over 15 years. Ralph and Cathy Coleman couldn't have been better. For a few years the next generation have taken it over and they are just as accommodating and fabulous as their parents. Katie and hubby have spruced it up big time and it's getting luxurious from the outdoor outhouse to an indoor flushy toilet and granite sink. It's rustic at it's finest. I was part of a group going up and evolved to continuing getting the group there. Typically I go in the winter but have been in every season and they each have their own beauty. Bring what you need because you aren't going to want to leave. Have fun!

We love the Rafters, we go every year with friends for the weekend. It's a big barn converted . They make maple syrup on the property to sell. Fire place inside and outside. Wood furnace heat 2 showers 1 inside and 1 outside. It's big and roomy.
