My daughter got married last weekend in Dahlonega. We blocked the entire Smith House for a room block for out of town guests. We also had our rehearsal dinner and Welcome Party there. Everything was great, from the planning process with Mariah, to the stay at the lodge (very clean and well equipped rooms). The Rehearsal Dinner was great, with very good food and the Welcome Party after was seamless. We had over 100 people for the Welcome party and even though it rained, the back-up plan worked great. We were very happy with Smith House. Brides, consider SH for your room block (block early) and your dinners/party. They are very accommodating, easy to work with and did a fantastic job. We did not run into any issues with the Smith House!

The Smith House Historic Inn and Restaurant Introduce

For anyone seeking a truly unique and historically rich experience when searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" in Dahlonega, Georgia, The Smith House Historic Inn and Restaurant stands as an iconic landmark. More than just a place to stay, it offers a deep dive into Southern tradition, renowned family-style dining, and a fascinating connection to Dahlonega's gold rush heritage. Located prominently at 84 S Chestatee St, Dahlonega, GA 30533, USA, this establishment has been a cornerstone of hospitality for over a century, welcoming guests with a blend of historical charm and attentive service.

Environment and Location: History and Convenience Hand in Hand

The Smith House boasts an enviable location just a block off Dahlonega's historic downtown square. This prime position places guests within easy walking distance of the town's charming shops, art galleries, and various local attractions. The Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site and The Historic Holly Theater are both just a few minutes' walk away, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the local culture and history without the need for a car. The Consolidated Gold Mine is also within an 18-minute walk, providing further opportunities for exploration.

The hotel itself is steeped in history. Built in 1899 by Captain Frank Hall, who was overseeing local gold mills, the property has a legendary past, including the discovery of a gold and quartz vein beneath the original structure. While mining was prohibited within city limits, a secret mine shaft beneath the building was later uncovered and is now a unique exhibit for guests. The property comprises the Historic Inn, the newer Lodge (opened in March 2020), and various cottages and villas, offering a range of accommodation styles. Guests can enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the garden or relax on the terrace, taking in the views of the historic surroundings. The property's blend of historic architecture and modern comforts creates a distinct and inviting atmosphere.

Services and Amenities: Southern Hospitality and Culinary Delights

The Smith House is renowned not only for its lodging but also for its exceptional Southern family-style dining, a tradition that dates back to 1922 when Henry and Bessie Smith first opened a boarding house on the property.

  • Accommodations: The hotel offers a variety of room types across its Historic Inn, The Lodge, and potentially cottages/villas. Rooms in the Historic Inn are individually furnished, often featuring traditional decor, while The Lodge, built in 2020, offers more modern rooms with amenities like flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges. Room options include King and Queen beds, with some Lodge rooms offering balconies. Guests consistently praise the cleanliness and comfort of the rooms, with many noting the premium bedding and spacious layouts. Common room amenities include air conditioning, coffee/tea makers, hair dryers, and complimentary toiletries. Free Wi-Fi is available in both public areas and guest rooms.
  • The Smith House Restaurant: This is arguably the centerpiece of the Smith House experience. It's famous for its Southern family-style meals, where generous portions of classic dishes are served at communal tables, reflecting a bygone era of hospitality. The menu typically features beloved staples like buttermilk fried chicken, country fried steak, baked ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese, fried okra, creamed corn, collard greens, homemade yeast rolls, cornbread muffins, and desserts such as strawberry shortcake. While one review noted some dishes could use more spice or the bread could be stale, the overall consensus for the restaurant is very positive, with many people traveling specifically to experience the food. Reservations are highly recommended for dinner, and while walk-ins are accepted, prompt seating for those with reservations (like the 5:45 seating at 5:45) is a highlight.
  • Event and Wedding Venue: The Smith House is a highly sought-after venue for private events, particularly weddings. It serves as a "wedding weekend specialist," offering facilities for rehearsal dinners, welcome parties, bridal showers, farewell brunches, and other special occasions. They have multiple private event spaces, including the Gold Room (20-40 guests), the Outdoor Veranda (up to 75 guests covered, 145+ extended), the Carriage Room (up to 70 guests), the Tanyard Room (main dining room, up to 120 guests), and the Mr. Hogue Room (up to 60 guests). The venue offers customizable menus, including plated dinners, buffets, and full bar packages featuring local wines and craft beers. Their staff, including planners like Mariah, are praised for being "very accommodating, easy to work with and did a fantastic job" in handling large events seamlessly, even with last-minute weather adjustments. They also facilitate room blocks for out-of-town guests.
  • Guest Services: Guests consistently laud the "great" and "helpful staff" at The Smith House for their friendly and accommodating service. The hotel offers a 24-hour front desk, daily housekeeping, and free self-parking. There is also a country store on-site offering local crafts and homemade jams.

The service staff was great. We made reservations for 5:45 and they had us seated at 5:45. The room we ate in was clean and neat. The food was a little bland, the chicken could use a little more spice. Side dishes were good but the bread was stale. But over all I would come again

The Smith House Restaurant, in my opinion, use to be a 5 star experience. However, the last two visits have been less than a 5 star experience. I realize that it is not an all you can eat restaurants. It is family style. With a large party, there should be enough food on a serving plate or dish that a visitor does not have to ask for extra servings so that everyone is fed. I have had this experience twice. Having prepared for large parties myself, I know how to calculate portions and servings so that everyone has a serving. I don’t ran a restaurant. If I can do that, then certainly a restaurant or kitchen manager can do the same. I mean they are the professionals. Also, the servers are inconsistent with their understanding with what a visitor can and cannot do. One visit was told, No cannot take leftovers home. Next visit, do you need a take home box to take leftovers home. And the topper, was being told by the server to hold onto our spoons for dessert. Now that is just tacky. A class act would place a fresh spoon in the dessert bowl for the visitors. The small details make the difference between a 2 star and 5 star experience.

I was very upset over our room! Nothing like i was expecting but i will take part blame for this! First of all we knew snow was coming so we went to play in it. We expected stuff to be closed! That being said the entire location has no grill no vending and no microwaves. The room #22 is all they have for people with dogs! We didnt expect the room to be in the back of the property looking out the window at the parking deck! Didnt expect somebody to be living above room 22# making all kinds of racket till 230am every night (no exaggerating)! The room was nice and clean but it was kind of a let down because in pictures of the property i had seen porches with rockers and rooms with claw bath tubs and i had seen pictures of fireplaces with fires! We had none of that! Fireplace was for looks no fires no claw tub no historical feeling no rockers no porch nothing but a parking deck on the back side to look out a window at. For the amount of money i paid i certainly wont go back instead i will get a couples cabin and save money as well as be able to have a view and definitely have amenities for comfort and still be able to take my dog! Maybe i expected to much and maybe i should have asked better questions and not went off pictures so much. As i said already tho...the amount of money i spent i should and will get a cabin next time with amenities and comfort and views and still be able to take my dog!!!!

We went to the breakfast buffet as the end to a great weekend in Dahlonega including one great night at the Smith House minus the repeatedly slamming front door. I was concerned their buffet would be a long wait. We shouldn't have been. We were shocked when we saw the buffet as it compared in size to the free breakfast at the chain hotels we go to when we vend shows. We even overlooked the one small buffet table at first thinking there was another room to go into to get the food. Unfortunately the quality was the same as well. My daughter and her boyfriend were quick to get a refund but I was in shock and decided to try the food. The egg casserole tasted like fake eggs and the sausage in it as well as the bacon slices were cheap quality. The biscuits were huge and flat with no insides, the jelly cheapest kind of individual packs, the coffee was hotel room quality. I am not the type of person to complain usually but this was so unexpectedly bad for basically $22 a person at such a great place as the Smith House I might suggest they even quit serving breakfast altogether if money is tight and focusing on other meals or only serving breakfast with special event dinners and really up the quality before people start looking other places for the whole bed and breakfast experience.
