Located on the picturesque shores of the Michigamme Reservoir in Crystal Falls, this resort offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the great outdoors. It is a place that celebrates the rustic, the unfiltered, and the genuine spirit of the UP. It's a destination for those who prioritize casting a line at dawn, the quiet rustle of the trees, and the camaraderie of a friendly tavern over polished luxury. The Way Dam Backwater Resort is an establishment that has long been a fixture in the local community, known for its focus on providing a basecamp for a wide variety of outdoor pursuits. It's an experience rooted in tradition, providing a no-frills, honest look at life in one of Michigan's most beautiful regions. For residents of Michigan, particularly those in the Lower Peninsula looking for a true "up north" escape, this resort offers a tangible connection to the state's wild heart. It’s a place where the focus is on the activities that bring people to this part of the state: the exceptional fishing, the hunting opportunities, and the chance to simply disconnect. The atmosphere is laid-back and welcoming, and while it may not be for everyone, it holds a certain appeal for those who value authenticity above all else. This article will provide an in-depth look at what you can expect when you visit, based on publicly available information and an understanding of the local experience.

Location and Accessibility

Way Dam Backwater Resort is nestled deep within Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a location that is both its biggest asset and a defining feature of the experience it offers. The resort's address is 368 Kopf's Rd, Crystal Falls, MI 49920, placing it squarely in the heart of Iron County. For locals, this location is understood to be a gateway to a vast network of forests, lakes, and rivers. The resort is situated directly on the Michigamme Reservoir, a large and beautiful body of water that is a primary draw for visitors. This reservoir is known for its excellent fishing, attracting anglers from across the state and beyond who are in pursuit of species like Walleye, Northern Pike, Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, Perch, Crappies, and Bluegill. Accessibility is part of the rustic charm. Getting to the resort requires a drive through winding roads and dense forest, a journey that itself sets the tone for the stay. While it may not be a short trip for those coming from downstate, the drive is a scenic one that leads you further and further into the serene wilderness. The resort's relative remoteness means it is a place where you can truly get away from it all. There are no bustling city centers or constant traffic to contend with, just the natural sounds of the surrounding environment. This location makes it an ideal spot for activities like hunting, snowmobiling in the winter, and simply enjoying the peace and quiet of a lakeside retreat. The resort serves as a central hub for those exploring the local area, whether on the water or on the trails. It's a location that encourages exploration and is perfect for individuals or families who are self-sufficient and eager to create their own adventure in the Upper Peninsula.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For Michiganders, Way Dam Backwater Resort is more than just a place to stay; it is a quintessential "up north" experience. It’s for the local user who understands and appreciates that a true Upper Peninsula getaway isn't about spa treatments and concierge services, but about the quality of the fishing, the quiet of the woods, and the simple pleasure of a cold beer after a long day outdoors. This resort is particularly well-suited for those who are looking to disconnect from their digital lives and reconnect with nature and their loved ones. Its location on the Michigamme Reservoir makes it a perfect base for fishing trips, hunting expeditions, or just a quiet retreat. The rustic accommodations and lack of high-speed internet are not seen as a drawback by this demographic, but rather as a feature that encourages them to fully immerse themselves in their surroundings. The resort’s year-round availability means it can be a part of their seasonal traditions, whether that's a summer fishing trip or a winter ice-fishing adventure. For locals, the value is in the authenticity. It’s an honest, no-frills destination that delivers on its promise of an escape into Michigan’s beautiful, rugged wilderness. It’s the kind of place where a person's character is more important than their cell phone service, and where the most important connections are made on the lake, not on a social media platform. Ultimately, Way Dam Backwater Resort serves a specific and cherished niche: the Michigan resident who knows that the best parts of the state are found off the beaten path, where the only luxuries you need are a good fishing pole and a clear view of the stars.

I had a great time fishing on my kayak here today!

Not for the civilized Stayed here for 6 days in their “rustic” trailers (single wide) to hunt grouse. They are a dump. Full of black mold, mice, rot, duct tape patches, and trailer life experience. You can’t lock the front door, the bathroom door doesn’t close, and the bedrooms don’t have doors. No internet. Food at the bar will be served with a side of “worn the same hoodie for 6 days” grit. It is cheap however. The only plus side. I stayed at nicer spots in Iraq. They need to update, clean, and provide a little safety.

Best burgers in the UP! This place is a hidden gem. We go once a year or so and it’s worth the trip. I can’t speak to the resort itself because we haven’t stayed there, but the restaurant is legit! Don’t go in a rush, but with time to enjoy pac-man and the june box. It does not disappoint!

My friend took me where he grew up and his brother took us here. Rode In a side by side for the time and it was epic. The burger was delicious. Definitely can't wait to go back!!
