Good afternoon! I live in North Carolina, but have a sister who has been confined to a long-term acute care facility in Stamford, CT for several years; another sister (from Maryland) and I visit her periodically. While we always stay at The Amsterdam Hotel, my most recent visit compelled me to write this review. Not only does the Amsterdam offer best room pricing, a wonderful continental breakfast, spacious, spotless, conveniently furnished rooms AND parking, it is the EXCEPTIONAL atmosphere and attitude always seen toward guests, between employees from cleaning to executive staff, and even with contractors. I consistently witness a professional, pleasant, respectful, and awesome attitude at The Amsterdam. It is comforting to know I can relax comfortably during multiple-day stays in such an environment. Thank you for the opportunity to share my experiences at The Amsterdam. Shirley Gibb of North Carolina
The Amsterdam Hotel, located at 19 Clarks Hill Ave, Stamford, CT 06902, USA, presents itself as a value-oriented option within the "Hotels Near Of Me" category, catering to travelers seeking an affordable and functional stay in Stamford, Connecticut. This hotel is designed to provide essential amenities and a convenient base for exploring the area, whether for business or leisure. Its focus on competitive pricing and fundamental services aims to appeal to a broad range of guests.
Environment:
The Amsterdam Hotel is situated in Stamford, Connecticut, a city known for its corporate presence and proximity to New York City. The hotel's location on Clarks Hill Avenue offers convenient access to local attractions and business centers. While the hotel does not boast expansive grounds or luxury amenities, it aims to provide a straightforward and practical environment for its guests. The property is designed for a no-frills stay, focusing on delivering core lodging needs. It's approximately 3.7 miles from the University of Connecticut-Stamford and close to various corporate offices and local businesses. The immediate surroundings are likely a mix of commercial and residential areas, typical of a city setting. Some guest reviews highlight the overall cleanliness of the rooms, while others suggest that more effort could be put into cleaning. This indicates a varied perception of the hotel's upkeep and atmosphere, suggesting that the environment prioritizes functionality over aesthetics.
Services:
The Amsterdam Hotel offers several key services to enhance the guest experience. A 24-hour front desk ensures that guests can check in or receive assistance at any time. A significant advantage is the complimentary continental breakfast offered, which can provide a good start to the day and contribute to cost savings for guests. The hotel also provides complimentary self-parking, a valuable amenity, especially for guests traveling by car in a metropolitan area. Free WiFi is available throughout the property, allowing guests to stay connected. Other services typically include daily housekeeping, express check-in and check-out, and a lift for accessibility. The hotel is noted for being family-friendly, though specific amenities geared towards children are not consistently detailed. The reception of staff behavior, however, is a notable point of divergence in guest reviews. While some guests praise the "exceptional atmosphere and attitude" of the staff, describing them as "professional, pleasant, respectful, and awesome," other reviews express significant dissatisfaction, citing "rudest employees" and instances of staff yelling at guests over minor issues like taking extra bagels to their room. This indicates that the consistency of service may vary, which is an important consideration for potential guests.
Features:
The Amsterdam Hotel features 84 guestrooms, each designed to provide a comfortable and functional space. While specific details on room types are not consistently available, the rooms are generally described as "spacious" and "conveniently furnished." Standard in-room amenities typically include air conditioning, a private bathroom, and a television. Some reviews also mention refrigerators and microwaves in the rooms, which can be very beneficial for guests on a budget or those staying for longer periods, allowing them to store and prepare their own food. The availability of these specific appliances should be confirmed directly with the hotel if they are essential for a guest's stay. The focus of the room features is on practicality and providing basic comforts rather than luxury. The hotel is non-smoking throughout, ensuring a healthier environment for all guests. The property's structure includes facilities to accommodate guests, such as an elevator for easy access to different floors. The free breakfast, comfortable rooms, and free parking are frequently highlighted as key features that add value to a stay at this hotel.
Promotional Information and Guest Considerations:
As a budget-friendly hotel, the Amsterdam Hotel often attracts guests looking for the "best room pricing" in the area. While it may not participate in a major loyalty program like larger chains, it frequently offers competitive rates directly or through various online travel agencies. Guests seeking promotional information should typically look for direct booking deals or compare prices across different platforms. The inclusion of free continental breakfast and free parking are significant value-adds that serve as promotional points, reducing overall travel costs. The hotel's appeal lies in its straightforward offering of a place to sleep at an economical price.
However, it is vital to provide an objective overview that includes the mixed experiences reported by guests. While some guests have consistently positive stays, praising the cleanliness, comfort, and the "exceptional atmosphere" created by the staff, others have reported concerning issues. These include serious complaints about customer service, such as extremely long waits for basic amenities like towels, and highly negative interactions with certain staff members, including reports of rudeness and yelling over minor requests. Additionally, a very serious incident involving an overdose on the premises was reported by a guest, which could contribute to an "atmosphere of unease and discomfort." The presence of marijuana smell and a general feeling of it being a "rundown apartment complex" housing "long-term residents" have also been mentioned as concerns. These diverse experiences indicate that the hotel might not meet the expectations of all travelers, particularly those seeking a traditional, highly professional, and consistently peaceful hotel environment. Potential guests are advised to manage their expectations regarding the level of service and the overall atmosphere, and to consider the possibility of encountering both positive and negative aspects during their stay.

May 19, 2025 · Shirley GibbHotel is fine as is, they don't put as much effort into cleaning as they could. If yiu need a cheap hotel to sleep in here is a good option. However, they have some of the rudest employees I've met at a hotel. My friend got yelled at for trying to bring me and my partner each one of the free bagels up to our room.
Apr 13, 2025 · TJ ErnstIt’s an old hotel it looks decent just for a rest stop but I woke up with bug bites. And I didn’t have any before I checked it. When you do stay notice that the beds has a mattress protector on the lower portion on the bed. Also the boards to the bed head is cut off. Just get an exterminator.these preventative measures can not hold up for long. Bed bugs are very expensive and overall emotional draining. The warm weather is approaching and these bug love warmth. Also change the filter or clean out the water dispenser because there is a mold like taste. I hope that management can remedy this situation before it gets out of hand.
Apr 05, 2025 · Franco ZamorThe hotel itself is old, the decor is old, the elevator is small. The room is equipped with mini refrigerator and microwave, the bathroom is clean , but the carpet is very dirty.
Jan 29, 2025 · laura zhuI've had the unfortunate experience of staying here twice. I booked this place along a trip to and back to NH and by the time I had my first experience I couldn't cancel my second. The rooms and hallways smell bad. The carpet is old and sticky I assume because it desperately needs to be cleaned. The elevator buttons don't work well or at all at times. The down button on the fourth floor didn't work, so I had to call the elevator to go up and then put in the lobby level. The inside buttons aren't much better. If you've ever wanted an experience where you have been so mad you could have pushed all the buttons on the elevator, then this place is for you. The shower the first time we stayed was dirty and didn't drain. The second night it had mold that had been painted over. The first night the bed had a wine stain on it, the second night, a coffee again. We were eaten alive both nights by what I hope weren't bed bugs, but given my experience I don't feel optimistic. The savings in price aren't worth the experience. Honestly camping in a tent is a better idea. Or sleeping in your car. Or not sleeping at all, just keep driving.
