The best part of this spot is the location. It is easily walkable to everywhere in Portsmouth that you want to visit. For a hotel that recently underwent a renovation, we certainly would have expected more. The pool/hot tub were not redone. They are grimy and the hot tub was not hot. Fine for kids, but not a fully relaxing experience. Our room was not ready for 3pm check in. They said “maintenance was doing extra checks”. It was ready about 30 minutes later which was fine. The sheets were very thin and definitely not new. Shower had soap scum left in it and no shower gel in the container. The lights throughout the halls flickered constantly. Hotel was quiet but we were there Sunday to Tuesday. We requested new towels and it took about 5 hours to get them. One thing we really appreciated was they provided liquid hand soap in the bathrooms instead of those cheep bar soaps. My husband’s comment was he wouldn’t have guessed it was recently redone. We will likely not be back because the price is very high for what you get. Overall hotel was reasonably clean and the staff we encountered was nice. Location is the best part but there has to be better in the city.

Services and Amenities

As a Hilton Garden Inn, this property aims to provide a reliable and comfortable experience with a range of signature brand amenities. The hotel recently underwent a renovation, contributing to "modern and clean" rooms, a point of pride for the staff. The staff are frequently described as "hospitable" and "nice," striving to assist guests. The hotel operates a 24-hour front desk, ensuring that assistance is always available. They also offer valet parking for a surcharge, which includes in/out privileges, a convenient service given downtown parking can be challenging. Pets are also allowed upon request, with charges and weight limits applying, making it a viable option for travelers with furry companions.

Key amenities available for guests include:

  • Indoor Pool and Hot Tub: A popular feature, providing a space for relaxation and recreation year-round. While some guests have noted that the pool and hot tub areas "were not redone" during a recent renovation and described them as "grimy" or "not hot," they generally remain a functional amenity, especially "fine for kids."

  • Fitness Center: A fully-equipped 24/7 fitness center with cardio machines and free weights allows guests to maintain their workout routines.

  • On-site Dining: The hotel features "The Garden Grille & Bar," which serves classic American cuisine for both breakfast (often a buffet, sometimes for a fee) and dinner. The Pavilion Lounge offers cocktails, fine wines, and craft beers. There's also a 24-hour Pavilion Pantry selling beverages, snacks, and small essentials for convenience.

  • Complimentary Wi-Fi: Available in all rooms and public areas, with remote printing capabilities, catering to both leisure and business travelers.

  • Business Center & Meeting Facilities: A 24-hour business center with enough space to host meetings and events for over 100 guests, along with flexible meeting rooms, makes it suitable for corporate travelers.

Larger suites offer spacious sitting areas. Guests appreciate the provision of liquid hand soap instead of bar soap in bathrooms, and USB plugs by the bed.

  • Laundry Facilities: Coin-operated laundry facilities are available for guest use, along with laundry and dry-cleaning services.

  • Accessibility: The hotel offers increased accessibility, with features like wheelchair-accessible units, elevators, and accessible business and fitness centers.

Features: Modernized Comfort and Business-Friendly Environment

The Hilton Garden Inn Portsmouth Downtown positions itself as a modern and comfortable hotel, particularly after its recent updates. The rooms are designed with a focus on functionality and comfort, often featuring ergonomic desk chairs for business travelers and premium bedding for a restful sleep. The inclusion of a microwave, mini-fridge, and Keurig coffee maker in every room adds a significant level of convenience, allowing guests to prepare snacks or simple meals in their rooms.

While some guest reviews indicate that the renovations might not have extended to all areas equally (e.g., the pool/hot tub), the overall impression of the rooms is positive, with descriptions of them being "modern and clean." The hotel's emphasis on providing a comfortable base for both business and leisure travel is evident in its amenities, such as a 24-hour business center, meeting facilities, and readily available Wi-Fi. The presence of an on-site restaurant and bar further enhances convenience, allowing guests to dine without having to leave the hotel, although numerous dining options are just a short walk away.

Promotional Information and Guest Insights

The Hilton Garden Inn Portsmouth Downtown is a popular choice for its "fantastic location" and consistently "friendly and responsive" staff. While some guests have noted minor issues such as occasional delays in room readiness, thin sheets, or soap scum, these seem to be isolated incidents rather than widespread complaints, and the staff are generally well-regarded for their helpfulness. The hotel's value is often a point of discussion, with some guests feeling the price is high for the overall experience, especially if expecting a completely brand-new feel throughout the entire property post-renovation. However, many others find it to be a "very comfortable place to stay" and appreciate the modern amenities and the convenience of a well-known brand.

For potential guests searching for "Hotels Near Of Me" in Portsmouth who prioritize a central location, brand reliability, and a good range of amenities for a comfortable stay, the Hilton Garden Inn is a strong contender. This newly undated hotel was a very comfortable place to stay when I was here for a business trip. The staff were very proud of the recent remodel, The rooms were modern and clean. Staff was hospitable with a restaurant and bar on site, plus valet parking and there are many adorable shopping locations, and restaurants within walking distance.

One of the most disappointing stays we have ever had. A lot of renovations going on but no communication about it until you arrive. But honestly, the work they are doing is like putting lipstick on a pig -in the renovated room we stayed in, the toilet ran consistently for three to four minutes in 20 minute intervals day and night. There was no hot water, it was barely lukewarm. The shower liner was filthy. We reserved the floor to ceiling windows room -it isn’t actually floor to ceiling windows, just a little larger than normal windows. The staff were not helpful with parking information if you don’t want to pay for valet. The location is the only thing it has going for it.

This was absolutely the worst hotel experience ! When I arrived to check in they informed me I reserved two rooms on line. I did not. They informed me I would be charged full price for two rooms unless someone called to make a reservation as they were sold out. I took my daughter for a special night to shop for wedding gowns l! We only wanted one room. Checking out my receipt only had one room charge but looking into bank statement they definitely charged me 279 dollars for a room no one used. The manager Jun was so rude and the general manager Troy has yet to respond to emails or phone calls! And the place was a dump ! Construction dust drywall everywhere never mentioned when booking. I am in the travel industry and would highly recommend no one wber stays here!!’ Still waiting for my refund..

Our revent stay is/was very disappointing. Website severely understatement the current condition of the entire ground and first floors. Absolutely in shambles with dust dirt and plastic sheets hung everywhere. No break on the rooms? Seriously? Hilton Honors members and loyal Hilton customers for decades but this is terrible. Also turn up the hot water temp! Holy smokes barely warm water. Give me a break already. Again website Seriously understates the condition I assume this is intentionally misleading to fill the rooms regardless of the mess. Even the front door is closed have to come in the side entrance and haul your luggage up the street!
