Overall, there are much better independently owned inns in Portsmouth. Room was clean. I booked through a third party site and the hotel tried to collect money directly from me. I called the third party and they said to absolutely not do that and if there was any issue that the hotel should call (think like a priceline). It sounded like maybe the hotel was having some computer issue that was delaying the payment from the third party site. Ultimately I did not pay the Inn directly and things got sorted out but I didnt appreciate the stress level when I prepaid my stay and this was a business trip on top of it. I would never stay here again due to the poor customer service.

  • Environment and Location:

The Bow Hotel is exceptionally well-situated in Portsmouth's waterfront district, specifically on Bow Street, which is a significant part of the city's historic Market Square area. This location places guests directly amidst the bustling heart of downtown Portsmouth, with shops, restaurants, cafes, and historic sites literally steps away. The building itself, an 1880 historic warehouse that once housed the Portsmouth Brewing Company, offers a unique ambiance with exposed brick and old timber beams, hinting at its industrial past. Guests can enjoy immediate access to cultural highlights such as the Seacoast Repertory Theatre (located on street level), The Music Hall, and the Strawbery Banke Museum. The proximity to Prescott Park and the waterfront allows for picturesque strolls and offers stunning views. The highly walkable nature of its surroundings means guests can easily explore Portsmouth's renowned culinary scene, boutique shops, art galleries, and entertainment venues without the need for a car. This central, vibrant, and historically rich environment is a major draw for visitors seeking an immersive Portsmouth experience.

  • Services and Amenities:

The Bow Hotel, as part of the Lark Hotels portfolio, emphasizes a seamless and contact-less arrival and departure experience, catering to guests who appreciate independence and efficiency. While it doesn't offer a traditional full-service hotel model, it provides thoughtful amenities designed for comfort and convenience. Key services include 24/7 access to a guest text line for any inquiries or assistance, a mobile Portsmouth guidebook, and local recommendations to help guests navigate the city. Complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. Rooms are equipped with mini-fridges, Smart TVs with streaming services, and central air conditioning, with windows that can also be opened for fresh air. A significant perk mentioned by guests is the 24/7 availability of coffee, water, and wine glasses in a common area. Additionally, the hotel offers complimentary use of a fleet of Trek cruiser bicycles, allowing guests to explore the city at their own pace. While the hotel does not serve breakfast, its prime location means guests are surrounded by numerous cafes and restaurants offering a wide array of breakfast and dining options. Limited on-site parking is available for a fee ($35/night for one of seven spots), which is a valuable amenity in downtown Portsmouth; guests are advised to reserve this in advance. The hotel maintains a non-smoking policy and does not allow pets.

  • Features and Room Comfort:

The Bow Hotel features ten intimate rooms, each designed with a contemporary, loft-like feel that contrasts beautifully with the building's historic brick walls and timber beams. The interior design emphasizes a light, neutral color palette with clean tile work, accented by bold artwork, creating a stylish and urban aesthetic. Rooms typically offer comfortable Serta Presidential Suite Euro Top mattresses with premium bedding, bathrobes, and high-quality designer toiletries (such as Malin+Goetz). Available room types include Petite Queen, Gallery Queen, Gallery King, and King Studio Suite, with the latter being the largest, offering a separate seating area. Rooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs with cable channels, and some may offer city views. Guests consistently praise the comfort of the beds and the cleanliness of the rooms. The unique character of staying in a converted brewery warehouse adds to the appeal, offering an experience distinct from standard chain hotels. While it's a historic building, guest reviews highlight comfortable amenities like good water pressure in showers. It is important to note that, being an older building, access to upper floors is by stairs only (with 12 exterior steps to reach the building entrance), and there is no elevator, which may be a consideration for some guests with accessibility needs.

We had a wonderful experience at Ale House. In a charming and historic building, close to shops and restaurants. Property manager had excellent communication with us on how to gain entry to building and room and was very accommodating. Comfortable beds. Great place for couples for quick visit to historic Portsmouth.

This is a great little boutique hotel in a great location. Our room was clean, comfortable and well appoi ted. There is a convenient and well stocked coffee set-up in the common room. Extra towels and toiletries are readily available next to check-in desk. There are lots of walkable shopping and dining options in town. We decided to stay an extra day and the hotel clerk was 100% accommodating.

I have to apologize for calling the hotel at "the most inconvenient time" about a reservation request. I am making sure that will not happen again. Anita

We purchased an upgraded room... Only to find out that we didn't get it and apparently they were sold out so we were out of luck. No compensation... Probably will not go back there
