I travel a lot for work. I haven't experienced better customer service at any hotel I stayed. I had some issues with room bookings due to 3rd party services (no fault of the hotel!). The front desk agents and manager were very accommodating and worked with me to make sure I got exactly what I needed. Special thanks to the receptionist that was there during my check in. Didn't catch her name, but she was wonderful and very nice. Another special thanks to the manager for giving her employees the ability to provide exceptional service. And a third one to Rudy, who helped me after my check out. All stars all of you :)

Hotel Havana Introduce

Howdy, fellow Texans! When you're planning a visit to San Antonio, our state's rich historical and cultural heart, you might be looking for something a little different than the usual hotel experience. If you appreciate unique character, a sense of history, and a touch of old-world charm, then prepare to be intrigued by Hotel Havana. This isn't just a place to lay your head; it's an experience designed to transport you to another era, right here on the tranquil Museum Reach of the San Antonio Riverwalk.

Hotel Havana, nestled at 1015 Navarro St, San Antonio, TX 78205, USA, is a lovingly restored historic property. Originally built in 1914, it beautifully blends Mediterranean Revival architecture with rich Spanish Colonial influences, all imbued with a calm, Caribbean temperament. It's a boutique hotel, meaning it focuses on providing a more intimate and distinctive stay compared to larger, more conventional properties. While some guest experiences can vary, as with any unique establishment, its dedicated staff and captivating ambiance often leave a lasting positive impression. This article will take you on a tour of what makes Hotel Havana a truly special destination for Texans looking for a memorable San Antonio getaway.

Location and Accessibility

Hotel Havana boasts a prime and distinctive location at 1015 Navarro St, San Antonio, TX 78205, USA. While still very much downtown, it's situated on the quieter "Museum Reach" section of the San Antonio Riverwalk. This offers a more serene and picturesque experience, allowing you to enjoy the river's beauty without being in the midst of the most bustling, tourist-heavy sections. However, rest assured, you're still incredibly well-connected to all the action.

From Hotel Havana, you can easily access many of San Antonio's key attractions. The main stretch of the Riverwalk, with its myriad restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues, is just a short, pleasant stroll away. The iconic Alamo, a must-visit for any Texan, is also within comfortable walking distance. Other nearby points of interest often include the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, the Majestic Theatre, and various museums along the Museum Reach. While the area can be busy, the hotel's position allows for a balance of tranquility and accessibility. For those driving, the hotel offers self-parking and valet parking for a fee (e.g., $25 for self-parking, prices can vary for valet), which is a convenient option for downtown locations. The proximity to bus stops means public transport is also an option for getting around.

Services Offered

Hotel Havana prides itself on offering services that enhance its unique boutique experience. While it may not have all the sprawling amenities of a large chain hotel, it focuses on thoughtful touches and personalized service:

  • On-site Dining at OCHO: The hotel features OCHO, a beautiful glass-enclosed restaurant overlooking the Riverwalk. OCHO serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, with a menu rooted in pan-Latin cultural influences from Mexico, Cuba, and Texas. It's known for its unique ambiance and delicious food.
  • Havana Bar (Speakeasy): In the hotel's basement, you'll find the Havana Bar, an evocative cocktail den designed to feel like a hidden speakeasy. It’s a fantastic spot for an evening drink.
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi: High-speed internet access is available throughout the hotel and in guest rooms, allowing you to stay connected.
  • 24-Hour Front Desk: Staff are available around the clock to assist with check-ins, check-outs, and any guest inquiries.
  • Pet-Friendly Accommodation: Hotel Havana is genuinely pet-friendly, welcoming dogs and cats of any size for a fee (e.g., $25 per stay). They even provide pet amenities like a bed, bowl, and treats, which is a huge plus for Texans traveling with their furry companions.
  • Complimentary Coffee in Lobby: Daily complimentary coffee is available in the lobby from 6:30 AM to 11 AM, a nice touch to start your day.
  • Room Service: In-room dining and drinks are available from OCHO during its operating hours.
  • Laundry Service and Dry Cleaning: Convenient options for keeping your wardrobe fresh during your stay.
  • Luggage Storage: Guests can securely store their belongings before check-in or after check-out.
  • Meeting/Banquet Facilities: The hotel offers flexible meeting spaces and unique venues like the Terrace and Library, suitable for private events or intimate gatherings.
  • SMEG Refrigerators with Minibars: Rooms are equipped with stylish SMEG refrigerators, often amply stocked with a minibar for convenience.
  • Custom Robes and Linen Bedcovers: Thoughtful in-room amenities like super-soft serape robes and heavyweight linen bedcovers add to the luxurious and comfortable feel.
  • Ear Plugs in Room: A practical amenity provided in rooms, acknowledging that historic buildings might have some ambient noise.

Features / Highlights

Hotel Havana truly stands out for its unique blend of features and a customer service philosophy that emphasizes guest comfort:

  • Exceptional Customer Service: Multiple glowing reviews highlight the outstanding customer service from the front desk agents, managers, and valet staff (with special thanks to Rudy, among others). Guests praise their accommodating nature, willingness to resolve issues (even those from third-party bookings), and overall friendly and helpful demeanor. This proactive and caring approach to hospitality is a significant highlight.
  • Unique Historic Ambiance: The hotel's original 1914 Mediterranean Revival design, with its Bastrop Pine floors, 20-foot ceilings, and colonial shuttered windows, creates a distinct and charming atmosphere. Guests often describe it as feeling "transported" and appreciate its "old-world elegance" and "rustic hardwood floors."
  • Direct Riverwalk Overlook: The hotel's location directly overlooking the tranquil Museum Reach of the Riverwalk is a major appeal, offering picturesque views and easy access to the scenic pathway.
  • OCHO Restaurant and Havana Bar: The on-site restaurant and the hidden speakeasy bar are major features. OCHO is praised for its Pan-Latin menu and beautiful glass conservatory setting, while the Havana Bar offers a cozy and unique evening experience.
  • Pet-Friendly with Thoughtful Amenities: Its genuinely welcoming attitude towards pets, including providing beds, bowls, and treats, makes it a top choice for Texans traveling with their beloved animals.
  • Stylish and Thoughtfully Designed Rooms: Despite being a historic building, rooms are described as clean, cozy, and stylish, with unique touches like pink fridges, colorful robes, and unique art. The beds are often praised for being super comfortable.
  • Serene Garden Area and Outdoor Spaces: The hotel features charming outdoor balconies, courtyards, and a garden, providing tranquil spots to relax and enjoy the San Antonio air.

While the overall experience is often delightful, it's important for potential guests to be aware of some occasional feedback, such as isolated reports of less-than-ideal staff interactions or pest sightings (though the hotel's overall cleanliness is highly rated), and the vintage nature of the building means elements like creaking wood floors are part of its character. The pricing, typical for a boutique luxury experience in a prime location, should be considered.

I was so excited to stay here… The pictures looked amazing. But the service/experience was pretty disappointing 🥺 which was sad because it was 300.00+ a night. Let’s get into it: -my husband had called on the way up to check and see if there were any rooms with bigger beds available. When we booked there was only 1 room option so we took it and hoped maybe by the time we got there maybe there was a cancellation and we could upgrade… when we called Saturday morning… the front desk girl was SO rude, like it was the WORST question she had ever been asked…I’ve never been treated that way as a hotel guest… ever. -The room looked just like the picture, and it appeared very clean and cozy…. But a large roach 🪳 ran across the floor and under the bed and we spent an hour trying to find it and never could. I’m terrified of roaches and was so scared it would return. -we made reservations at the OCHO restaurant that is part of the hotel … I was SO excited to eat here after seeing pictures. We got there at our reservation time and got sat. Our waiter took forever to bring us menus and when we said “thank you!” He never replied.. then again when he brought out water we said “thanks!” And he just walked off… I was feeling really uncomfortable and it was such a vibe killer to feel like we were such a bother so I asked my husband if we could please go somewhere else… we got up and walked to a different restaurant and had a great time. I wish I would have picked the Hotel Valencia instead, but unfortunately I fell for the perfect pictures and booked here instead. Take it from me, and find somewhere else! ❤️

I wanted to like this hotel but it just wasn’t up to normal standards. Pretty threadbare and no services. The bar was closed for a private event so we couldn’t get a drink or even sit near the river outside of the bar. We tried but were kicked out. No bottles of drinking water so I had to drink tap water during the night. It’s been years since I’ve not had complimentary water in the room. Yes, there was sparkling water in the mini bar but who wants to take pills and it or spend money on it? I left a 24k gold chain in the room and I tried calling multiple times to have someone check for it but no one answered the phone and no one called me back so by the time I got ahold of someone, it was gone. Expensive mistake. I probably would have gotten it back if they had answered the phone before the cleaning crew. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel. Sorry.

winter for drag brunch Sunday so I did not stay at the hotel but the hotel is very cute. It's a boutique hotel so it's very small and very quaint, but went there to eat breakfast or brunch and watch the dry queens. The show was very good. the girls were funny andyeah little amateur young girls coming up in there in the circuit, but they were very nice very friendly. They were funny they dance. It was a great show. I enjoyed it a lot.

This was our third time staying at the Havana, and sadly I think it will be our last. We stayed three nights and slept terribly. The first night we were so cold (even with the thermostat cranked all the way up) we had to request an additional blanket. The second and third nights were a Friday and Saturday, so we woke up often to loud groups leaving the bar outside our window and high heels clomping around on the creaky floors late into the night. In addition to that, we shared a wall with a very angry baby who wailed for hours. The Havana offers ear plugs at the front desk, but my suggestion would be to leave them in each of the rooms- because you’ll definitely need them!! The beds are comfy, the staff is kind, the complimentary coffee is good. But for that price… we’ll pay for peace and quiet elsewhere. Sorry Bunkhouse, we’re usually huge fans 💔
